Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: GUEST,Roberto Date: 27 Mar 00 - 12:50 PM Two CD that in my opinion are among the best have already been named, "Blow,Boys,Blow", by Ewan MacColl & A.L.Lloyd, and the Saydisc anthology "SEa songs and shanteys from the last days of sail". I would add the Topic anthology, "Blow the man down", and the CD by A.L.Lloyd about the whaling trade, "Leviathan". The other Topic anthologies about sea songs, "Round Cape Horn" and the two in the collection "The Voice of the People" ("We've received orders for to sail" and "Our ship shall sail the ocean") are not about shanteys, but they are very interesting too. Roberto |
Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: zander (inactive) Date: 27 Mar 00 - 01:14 PM There is an album called 'Farewell to the Master ' by a group from the north east of Englang called The Keelers. It is a tribute to Stan Hugill, it is the best shanty album ever. Regards, dave |
Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: dick greenhaus Date: 27 Mar 00 - 02:01 PM Blow,Boys,Blow", by Ewan MacColl & A.L.Lloyd the Saydisc anthology "SEa songs and shanteys from the last days of sail". the Topic anthology, "Blow the man down" the CD by A.L.Lloyd about the whaling trade, "Leviathan". "Round Cape Horn" and the two in the collection "The Voice of the People" ("We've received orders for to sail" and "Our ship shall sail the ocean") All available at CAMSCO Music. Two others, which I highly recommend, are Folk-Legacy cassettes only (I think): both by the Boarding Party. |
Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: Sandy Paton Date: 27 Mar 00 - 02:47 PM Right you are, Dick. The Boarding Party cassettes are available from Folk-Legacy with booklets of notes on the songs' histories and their complete texts. CLICK HERE (I hope!) Sandy |
Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: Linda Kelly Date: 27 Mar 00 - 03:57 PM Anything by the Keelers as mentioned above, or by Johnny Collins. Also a group called the Anchormen (Ian Smith and Keith Kendrick) who I beleive are now defunct, but who did a tape called Nautical but Nice. |
Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: Margo Date: 27 Mar 00 - 07:57 PM Look for anything by LOU KILLEN. He has several CD's available; "Sailors, ships and chanteys" , "A Seaman's Garland", and Steady as she Goes". Then for a pleasurable listen but a departure from the authenticity of a'capella shanteys check out Shanghaied on the Willamette. Fun! Happy listening - Margo |
Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: Doctor John Date: 28 Mar 00 - 12:43 PM I've just started collecting these. Yes, "Steady As She Goes" is one of the best. Topic produce a good anthology "Blow The Man Down" (includes Steptoe's son!). I found a good Johnny Collins CD for just about £5.00 called "Songs of the Sea" - you can't beat that for value. Dr John |
Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: GUEST,belter Date: 28 Mar 00 - 08:32 PM I recomend William Pint & Felicia Dale, a duo who sing songs of the sea. I think you can find their web page by searching for their names. I that doesn't work try Hearts of Gold the name of one of their albums. |
Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: GutBucketeer Date: 28 Mar 00 - 11:45 PM There used to be a Sea Chantey FAQ that was uploaded to the Folk newsgroup every once in a while. It had an invaluable annotated list of recordings and books on Shanteys. There is a website that was started several years ago and never finished that has most of the FAQ information on it. It can found here: Enjoy JAB |
Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: Sandy Paton Date: 29 Mar 00 - 12:41 AM Mudcat's own "Liam's Brother" (Dan Milner) has a good 'un titled Irish Ballads and Songs of the Sea on Folk-Legacy. (CD-124). He's backed by a pretty darned good crew including Mick Moloney and Lou Killen, among others of equal talent and energy. TAKE A LOOK HERE Sandy (with proprietary interest admitted) |

Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 29 Mar 00 - 09:15 AM Having no connection with Dan Milner or Folk-Legacy I can honestly recommend their CD as well ( you know where to send the payola, guys!). I bought it on the recommendation of other 'catters and I'm glad it was brought it to my attention. Great stuff. RtS |
Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: TerriM Date: 29 Mar 00 - 01:36 PM The Shanty Crew have a cd called 'Where am I to go?" with lots of lovely clasics on it and a fab set of notes to accompany; it's from Brewhouse Music, dunno if you can get it from a related to Mudcat site, if you can, good,if not e-mail me and I'll give you the address and telephone number. |
Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: paddyc Date: 30 Mar 00 - 01:23 PM My favourite Shanty album is "The Wild & Wasteful Ocean by Clancy O'Connell and Clancy. Click on that link to go to Liam Clancy's website for more details. All the best, Willy Brennan. |
Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: SeanM Date: 30 Mar 00 - 03:49 PM Speaking of the Clancys and shanteys... I've often heard tell of a record they did of nothing but shanties back during their original heydey... anyone know details on it? I'm a fan of their arrangements, and would love to at least know what's on it. M |
Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: KathWestra Date: 30 Mar 00 - 04:40 PM Dick Holdstock and Allan MacLeod (based in California) have recorded bunches of chanteys. Since I'm at work, I don't have the names & publication info., but I'll get it and jump back on here. They're worth hearing! (Dick has an amazing repertoire of Napoleonic songs, many of which he's recorded, and about which he's writing a book. These are also well worth hearing!)
I'm not sure I agree that Pirates Royale are a good source, but they do have lots of ardent fans around here and surely get people's attention when they perform. They have an especially great following among kids and teenagers here in the Washington, DC, area.
There are also some VERY GOOD source books from which to learn (and learn about) sea songs. "Songs the Whalemen Sang" and "Shanties from the Seven Seas" are two that come to mind as definitive. I'd also second the recommendation of the Boarding Party recordings available from Folk Legacy. Not only is the singing wonderful, but the well-researched notes are superb. |
Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: Abby Sale Date: 30 Mar 00 - 07:52 PM There are many good suggestions here. I've had and loved the MacColl/Lloyd records since forever. But I think of them more as songs then chanties. Also many of them are forebitters or a few "songs about the sea." Keep in mind that the chantey is the actual working song. It has a call/response/rhythm. Sone as a presentation piece it's just a song based on tradition. There are few field recordings of chanties, of course, since the practice died about 1917. But the bits of Bahamin stuff on Library of Congress records are superb (Ethnic Music:LA,Bahamas,Southwest (Lomax) AFS L5). After that, there's some brilliant reproduction of it. I'd also put the two Boarding Party records up there at the top. The two Hugill tapes available from Mystic Seaport are not to be missed. Prof. Hugh Williamson's extensive Sea Chanty FAQ http://www.netcom.com/~neilmber/shantyfaq/part1.html is well worth a read and there are many excellent references there. |
Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: Abby Sale Date: 30 Mar 00 - 08:13 PM Hmmm. The Prof's FAQ seem to have been stolen. The front page is actually http://home.netcom.com/~neilmber/shantyfaq/part0.html but the good info part isn't there, only the lists. They are useful themselves - records, song titles, venues but not the meat of the faq. I have the full updated faq but it's 97 pages on Word for Windows so I don't think I'll copy it here. (You're welcome!) I don't know where it is on the web. But here's the Prof's updatish list of CDs These fourteen are quite good and contain, almost exlusively, sea shanities and/or whaling music: 01. Clayton, Paul, Sailing & Whaling Songs of the 19th Century, Legacy, CD389 02. Holdstock, Dick; Murphey, Tom, San Francisco Shanties and Sea Songs of California's Gold Rush, Holdstock & Murphey, HDMU1 03. Kastle, Tom & Chris, Strike the Bell, Sexton Music, SXA5991 04. Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: Margo Date: 01 Apr 00 - 05:21 PM Since William Pint and Felicia Dale were mentioned earlier, I just thought I'd mention that I came across their touring schedule here. They are going to spend quite a bit of time in the UK, so heads up that way! I do recommend going to see them; I enjoy their shanteys. Margo |
Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: GutBucketeer Date: 01 Apr 00 - 10:44 PM ABBY: I have an earlier version of the full FAQ (1997 I think), but haven't seen it listed recently. When was the last time that it was updated that you are aware of ??? Do you know where it is for download by FTP or some other means? By the Way. I have enjoyed your "Happy" series over the years. Man what an encyclopedia of information!!!! :-) Also, is Abby Sale your real name or psuedonym? I know of some other Abby's in Florida that post by different nick names and was wondering if you were one and the same. JAB |
Subject: RE: CD Req:Best CD's of Sea Shantys From: Abby Sale Date: 01 Apr 00 - 11:14 PM JAB, My copy is "Sea Chanteys, Forebitters, & other Songs of the Sea" V. 5.1, dated: 18 March, 1997. Hugh sent it to me personally then went out to do research in Fiji or somewhere. Haven't heard from him in a while... The 4.2 faq was webbed by a Neil Berkowitz in 1996. I wrote him the other day when I caught the faq-loss but haven't heard back yet. If you let me know your e-mail address & want it I'll email it. It's 97 pages of Word for Windows & 230kb. Thanks for the kind words. "Abby Sale" is my real name & as far as I know, the only one such in the world. Although the name is real, it is possible that I am either fictional or digital. |
