Subject: Willie Green -- seeking lyrics
From: GUEST,molsmith@indiana.edu
Date: 28 Mar 00 - 12:42 PM

I am searching for the lyrics to a song that includes the following lines (or something like them):

Now, Willie Green, I think you're mean...

You sneaked away the other day with Nellie...

I am asking on behalf of a friend who got them from his mother. She rememebered _her_ mother singing this song to her as a child, which would have been around the 1930s.

Any help or leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Found at Indiana University Sheet Music Collections:

SMARTY
Words, Jack Norworth. Music, Albert Von Tilzer.
New York: The York Music Co., 1908.

1. Now, Willie Green, I think you're mean.
You ran away and hid.
You sneaked away the other day
With Nellie. Yes, you did.
You did, you did, you know you did.
You didn't? Oh! Such lies!
I saw you with my own two eyes.
You even hugged and kissed her in the lane.
I'm mad, so please don't speak to me again.

CHORUS: Smarty, Smarty, Smarty,
Thought you had a party.
Don't forget what the teacher taught:
You'll be sorry if you get caught.
I'm goin' to tell your mother. Just see if you don't care.
You're nothing but a smarty cat, So there, there, there!

2. Why, Annie Brown, how can you frown?
That's not the way to do.
There's not another girl in town
I love like I love you.
You're jealous. "Fess" up. honor bright.
You know it isn't right,
'Cause that's what makes grown-up folks fight.
Is kissing such an awful, awful crime?
I knew that you were looking all the time.
