Subject: Folk Music in New York City From: karen jonason Date: 29 Mar 00 - 06:53 AM I am visiting NYC from 19th to 23rd April. I would be grateful for details of any folk music events during that time period. I put in a similar request last time I visited and got a few suggestions. Please help this time! |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in New York City From: InOBU Date: 29 Mar 00 - 07:57 AM My band, Sorcha Dorcha is playing on April 21, Friday at 8PM at the Fort, part of The Sidewalk Cafe, Avenune A on 6th street. There are other folk groups usually on the bill, we are playing for an hour, it is usually a sort of folk variety show, I understand, though I havent been there. We play traditional celtic music with a heavy emphasis on Irish music, and as I am Anglo Irish, with a lot of Yorkshire infulence on the family we do some Yorkshire music as well. I also write ballads on modern concerns in the tradition of baladry I inherited from my dad, so we have songs about the forced assimilation of Canadian Indians, the murder of Gypsies in the Czech republic, the murder by NYC police of Amadou Diallo. I think you will enjoy the band... Enjoy your visit, say hi if you make the gig, Larry Otway |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in New York City From: Little Neophyte Date: 29 Mar 00 - 08:18 AM Karen, Sorcha Dorcha is an excellent band. Though I have not had the opportunity to hear them perform live, I have listen to their music on tape and really enjoyed their feel of authenticity. Larry, I am very glad to hear you found a new location to perform at. When you put out your tip can, I suggest you dab a little Crazy Glue on the bottom. All the best Bonnie |

Subject: RE: Folk Music in New York City From: Suffet Date: 21 Jan 11 - 11:19 PM Everyone, please look at the dates. I revived this old thread from 2000 rather than start a new one on the same topic. Also, has anyone heard from Lorcan Otway (InOBU) lately? He has two Facebook pages. One appears to from the good old Lorcan that we know, but the other seems to me like it's from an impostor. Here's a link to the strange page. Is this for real? I would like to know. --- Steve |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in New York City From: EBarnacle Date: 22 Jan 11 - 10:16 AM That's our Larry. I saw him a few weeks ago at his home. We spoke about his project, The Museum of the American Gangster. The picture is not current as he has [deliberately] lost a bit of weight. |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in New York City From: GUEST,John from Kemsing Date: 23 Jan 11 - 07:54 AM Can anyone shed any light on a folk music venue in NY called something like" Banjo Harry`s" or something akin to that? It certainly has the word "Banjo" in it |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in New York City From: InOBU Date: 23 Jan 11 - 08:27 AM ERIC!!!! I am NOT an anti Muslem, member of the BNP or any other racist org. That is NOT my website, some little gobshite with nothing better to do stole my identity to make that page. Frankly, the law should deal harshly with that, it is both slander and libel, and I expect one of these days the law will. |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in New York City From: Susan of DT Date: 23 Jan 11 - 09:25 AM John - You may mean this one: Banjo Jim's – A Neighborhood Bar 700 East 9th Street at Avenue C in New York City www.banjojims.com Ken Schatz runs a sing there |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in New York City From: Suffet Date: 23 Jan 11 - 10:29 PM Lorcan, That's what I suspected, which is why I wrote that it seemed like an impostor. Thankfully, I was correct. Is there anything you can do to get Facebook to remove that page? --- Steve |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in New York City From: Suffet Date: 23 Jan 11 - 10:31 PM Lorcan, I just clicked on the link and the impostor's page is gone. Now is there anything you can do to nail the SOB? --- Steve |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in New York City From: BrooklynJay Date: 24 Jan 11 - 03:40 AM For info about Ken Schatz's sing at Banjo Jim's: Exceedingly Good Song Night The next one is coming up on Sunday, January 30. Jay |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in New York City From: GUEST,John from Kemsing Date: 24 Jan 11 - 07:03 AM Susan of DT and BrooklynJay. Many thanks. You have both hit the nail on the head. My dear friends Alice and Bill from New Haven, CT, go there and say the evenings are top class. |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in New York City From: InOBU Date: 24 Jan 11 - 08:33 AM Steve: The imposter is from Mudcat, and it began with his impersonating Richard Bridge. Some idiots need a life, so they impersonate others who have one. Note he impersonates good musicians who are well educated and generally doing well in their lives... how sad. |
