Subject: Fair Maids of February From: Teasle Date: 29 Mar 00 - 10:54 AM I think this was something that Barry (or was it Robin) Dransfield used to do ... a beautiful song. Seeing all the crocuses (croci) striving for the sunlight through the cold, hard ground just recently brought it to mind. words I can remember... Fair Maids of February Why don't you come out today... I've been searching for this one for a while! Thanks, Teasle |
Subject: Lyr Add: FAIR MAIDS OF FEBRUARY (Robin Dransfield) From: TerriM Date: 29 Mar 00 - 01:57 PM Fair maids of February, why don't you come out today? Fair maids of February, why don't you come out to play? Oh we've seen you, oh, we've seen you When the air was sweet and made us grow From the fastness of winter, the first flower to venture And now we're lying beneath the snow
Our dresses are torn and tattered,
But we are rooted, we are your children Repeat 1st verse. I have done this from memory ( which is unreliable at the best of times) but I think it's the gist and hopefully, someone will correct my mistakes....actually more like a racing certainty that someone will, I think :) Terri |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Maids of February From: Teasle Date: 29 Mar 00 - 04:13 PM Thanks Terri - do you remember which album this was on? I must say that I am well impressed with Mudcat - it is so good to find like minded people isn't it? and people who know the same obscure songs as you. We are not alone after all! Cheers to you, Teasle |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Maids of February From: Lanfranc Date: 29 Mar 00 - 05:07 PM It's on Robin Dransfield's album "Tidewave" - I doubt if it's still available. I could provide a tape if you sent a message to me thru Mudcat with your snailmail address. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Maids of February From: Teasle Date: 29 Mar 00 - 05:24 PM Thanks Alan, I remember it now - Tidewave. I did have it once but lost it in a divvy up (if you know what I mean)! Sad loss. The album, that it. Would you really send me a tape. That would be very kind of you. Do please e-mail me at maisie.herivel@virgin.net Ta |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Maids of February From: GUEST,Gazza2 Date: 17 Jan 20 - 11:53 AM Anyone got a set of chords for this lovely tune? I've just found it again after many years! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Maids of February From: GUEST,Ray Date: 17 Jan 20 - 04:17 PM I bought the record from Robin many years ago and still have it somewhere. The only thing is that the song is about snowdrops and not croci! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Maids of February From: Hagman Date: 17 Jan 20 - 08:18 PM LP was re-issued by Hux Records in 2008 as a 2-cd set with a live concert. Still listed as being available http://www.huxrecords.com/cdsales97.htm From the liner notes: "FAIR MAIDS OF FEBRUARY is an old country expression for snowdrops. The particular snowdrops in question tried valiantly to bring themselves into the world in a difficult environment outside my North London flat, but only the leaves managed it. A similar thing happens with some North London humans. The idea for this song came from listening to Tom Forrest on “The Archers”, who impressed me greatly with the aptness of this rural nickname for such charismatic flowers. Little brother Bazza helped with the lyrics." |
Subject: Lyr Add: FAIR MAIDS OF FEBRUARY From: Acorn4 Date: 18 Jan 20 - 04:23 AM Alternatively:- The Fair Maids of February As you walk out on a May morning, Many a fair maid you’ll spy, Who’ve all been waiting for this moment, Their hopes all flying high. You’ll see them spread across the fields, All of them on a mission, But for every maid, there are three brisk lads, Eyeing up the competition. Now you may decide to chance your arm, And pray to lady luck, But those maidens that wander out in May Are all as common as muck. But if you want a rarer treat, Where rivals there are few, Then those fair maids of February, They are the ones for you. These fair maids out of season, Cunningly they steal All among the trees and bushes, Themselves for conceal Though it’s all quite illegal to play This game of hide and seek, If perchance they do get caught They’d be up before the beak. So although these maids of February are exceeding rare, If you are prepared to persevere, You’ll catch one in a snare. And he who dares may win the heart, Of a Nancy or a Polly, If you’re practised at the art, Of Spot the Ball or Where’s Wally For those fair maids of February Are bold and fearless lasses, While those fair-weather maids of May Are just a load of wusses. So come all ye brisk and handsome lads, Whose hearts are bold and merry, To boldly go where the cold winds do blow To find those fair maids of February. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Maids of February From: GUEST,Gazza2 Date: 18 Jan 20 - 02:21 PM Found a couple of Utube renditions but still not quite cracked the chords being used. Anybody help me??? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Maids of February From: GUEST,Gazza2 Date: 19 Jan 20 - 08:23 AM Jenn Butterworth version is nice. Looks like it could be in Dropped D?? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Maids of February From: GUEST Date: 19 Jan 20 - 12:49 PM Here it is on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBUjdrf2uFg |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Maids of February From: Stanron Date: 19 Jan 20 - 02:28 PM Try this
|
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Maids of February From: Stanron Date: 19 Jan 20 - 04:18 PM I forgot to add that it sounds to me like it's played in Dropped D tuning with a capo on the third fret, putting it into the actual key of F. If you want chord shapes I can oblige. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Maids of February From: GUEST,Gazza2 Date: 19 Jan 20 - 04:36 PM Cheers, Stanron, I think you're right. Any chord shapes much appreciated by me if the arthritic fingers can stretch that far! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Maids of February From: Stanron Date: 19 Jan 20 - 06:12 PM Your arthritic fingers or mine? I think this covers it. X means don't play. Because this piece is picked rather than strummed you don't have to hold down complete chord shapes. Dropped D tuning
|
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Maids of February From: Stanron Date: 19 Jan 20 - 07:32 PM I'd like to emphasize that this piece is picked rather than strummed. The lowest note in these shapes is played as an individual bass note. Other notes in the chord are picked after the bass note. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Maids of February From: GUEST,Gazza2 Date: 21 Jan 20 - 11:44 AM Thanks Stanron, you have really helped a lot. I'm very grateful. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Maids of February From: Stanron Date: 21 Jan 20 - 12:05 PM Your welcome. I'm glad it was useful. I missed out Em/B.
