Music of the Sphere:
According to a report just published in Science, the Earth gives off a musical sound, because it is continuously vibrating. Japanese scientists have measured the very low frequency (in the range of once every 200 seconds). This is in addition to the vibrations caused by occasional earthquakes or volcanos: a bass note. It is assumed that the Earth is oscillating in resonance with the atmosphere. The amplitude of the oscillation varies, reaching its peak in July and August -- the theory is that the movement of warm air to the top of the atmosphere results in convective cycling that results in dynamic pressure affecting the slow oscillation.

Personally, I think its caused by Rap music and Lo-Rider sound systems. I could be wrong.

No - it's that whirring machine that is mysteriously left switched on just outside my window on Sunday mornings. Don't know what it is, but I always seem to wake up to it on the very morning I want to sleep in.

So, let's see...a tank circuit hooked to sensors at a resonant frequency of multiples of .0005 Hz...and the earth drives our generators for us. Better than catching a tornado and putting it in a box. 'Course if it really caught on, every home would be run by one in the basement, there would be millions of these boxes all over Earth...and the feedback would interfere with the original oscillation beat and degrade it or reinforce it and it would be worse than global warming. We'd get Global Humming! Every hearing species on earth would go psycho, and only the cockroaches survive...

There is actually a legendary tale that Nikolai Tesla caused earth-tremors in the lower Village of Manhattan by using a resonator which fed back a pulse into the bedrock through an iron columnin his workshop, which made the neighborhood start to oscillate, and the local constables figured it had to do with him and found him toying with this device in his warehouse/workshop. Made him quit it.

Dunno if its true or not, but a funny story and a cautionary tale about what happens when oscillations feed back into themselves. Remember Gallopin' Gertie, the Tacoma Narrows bridge that tore itself apart back in the (?) 20's? Same principle...

This kinda reminds me of something I heard on NPR once, that out in Arizona, at about 11:30am, there's this weird earth-rumbling drone that no one is sure what it is. The residents know exactly when it's going to happen...the govenment & the military have both investigated the phenomenon (I know that's not saying much) and cannot figure out what it is! Scientists and musicians (!) alike have confirmed that the drone, based on cycles per second, that it is an A flat. My opinion? God's taking his digeridoo lessons out where he was sure no one would complain!

The Drums of Seneca are another sound phenomena that has gone unexplained. It is real, I've heard it, but though there are tons of theories, no known cause.

Tis true, Amos. Tesla was a member of the Rosicrucians and I've read some of their private materials about and by him on it.

Peter, this goes along with the theory my brother wrote a booklet about and is now expanding into a book at the request of a publisher, Earthquake Prevention Through MetaMusic. He has a fairly impressive bibliography and has years of research into it. If there is interest, sometime, I'll post a bit more. I think I may have barely touched on it in one of the Music Healing threads a long time ago.

He was a guest speaker at the 1994 or 5 (can't remember which) International Forum for New Science in Ft. Collins, Colorado, where he presented his paper, which was published in their proceedings.

Interesting stuff and Spaw....you may not be that far off, even though I know you had your tongue firmly in cheek!**BG**

I remember hearing a story in my youth - the 60's - that there was a tribe in Africa that felt like they had tapped into the rhythm of the planet. They believe that if they ever stop their drum circle that the planet will disappear. No one seems to know how long they have been drumming. But the tribe keeps it going all the time. Has anyone else hear of this ??

Wesley, not sure if this is the one you remember hearing about or not, but this site has some very interesting history on African drumming and its religious, military, and social significance.

Does anyone share the reaction to most drumming that I have? Perhaps because I am susceptible to the rhythms, I don't like drumming by and large because I often have the visceral feeling that when it stops my heart will stop too. Most uncomfortable.

I have quite the opposite. I can feel it all the way to my toes, conncecting to the heartbeat of the earth Mother and totally enveloping me in a warm cocoon of At-One-ness. It seems to continue to reverberate long after the drumming is over.

Perhaps you feel that way from fear of losing control? Not making a judgement call, just offering an idea of explanation. Maybe it also would have to do with what type of drumming?

I'm sure Alison can back me on this. In the North of Ireland every year there's some mysterious drumming that occurs leading up to the 12th of July, which gets a certain segment of the populace worked up into quite a lather indeed. And after July 12th it seems to taper off. Most eerie! All the best. Seamus

Hey,Ebbie, don't think you're alone. I have a hard time enduring much drumming also. (And am approximately the polar opposite of the control freaks, too.)

Never have been able to understand why. Just don't like it.

I have a mantra posted on the wall in my music room that I put up shorly after I bought my first drum. This thread prompts its posting.

"The soul of the earth is the beating of the drum. The soul of the drum is the beating of my heart."

Hey, in Hindu religion, Shiva Nataraja's drum keeps time for the turning of the years, and also represents the beat of the human heart. "Heartbeat of the world" as they say in Riverdance.

I like the brushy, whispery strokes on a snare drum during dramatic moments of a song- does that make up for it a bit? Just a little? Actually I much prefer an upright bass over a drum in just about any music I listen to.

On a cerebral level I understand- and envy- what you're describing in your spirit and body's response to drumming. But like canoer, it doesn't work for me. It's almost frightening to me- so maybe it IS a control issue for me.

Speaking of the 'global humming', I would love to see a thread on that kind of thing. Maybe because I decided long ago that the main reason that people respond so deeply to harmonies in music is because the earth is harmonious and we recognize the connection. I'm not saying this right- does anyone know what I'm trying to say?

I like to fantasize beyond these things. Isn´t it true that sounds of Nature (audible or not) have an influence in our behavior, emotions and sensibility ? I think each time we take a break and escape from big cities for some days, we experiment an important transformation. For example, I always get asleep when I´m at the beach. Can´t resist the sound of the waves. (Hey! I´ll try a tape record when I go to bed).
Different sounds from different regions could also influence in people´s character. Unconsciously we may have been formed by the natural sounds. I wish I could live in a rain forest near the coast. (And sleep in the beach)

Maybe if we could all tune to the note the Earth is playing things might work a bit better?

Anyway I've just typed in "Music of the Spheres" to a search engine, and this is what it came up with.

Kevin! Those are exactly some of the theories my brother drew from in the 1980's when he wrote his booklet. He proposed a series of *centres* along the faultlines, in which trained musicians would intone the correct harmonies which would vibrate with the earth, keeping things on an even keel, so to speak. Those tones would be based on a giant imaginary chord, much as Pythagoras talked about. He went into some fairly lengthy explanations of this. We also did several workshops on this in New England and back here. He also developed a method of taking one's astrological sign and figuring out the tones of each planet, coming up with a personal tune for your specifics. Pretty interesting stuff. Makes me want to get it all up on a website!

Thanks for the link.

mmhhh.. no. If you want to hear a contrary opinion, I think Kepler's conjectures were an excellent spiritual complement to his scientific research, but had nothing to do with science. The trajectory of bodies in space proved to be fairly irregular, those divine proportions did not exist, and the relation of physics and numbers was mathematical and not mystic. Also, the fact that harmony is formed by particular mathematical relations between frequencies, does not mean that every math relation is musical. What is most fascinating in science, is that every discovery that proves we were wrong, at the same time opens new horizons of wonder.

I've always felt a pipe organ comes the closest to capturing the harmonies (harmonics) of the planet. The opening chord to "Also Sprach Zarathustra".The thunder of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor.
Maybe it's the rumble of the bass pipes.
Some time ago Keith Jarrett recorded an album on an 18th century Baroque organ in Germany. It was called "Hymns and Spheres" Very awesome music.
