Thanks for this. I first heard it at a Joe Brown concert a couple of years ago and transcribed his version from his record ("56 and taller than you think")but didn't know the origin or the correct words as posted on Cowpie (didn't think to look there: Doh!).

It's a Billy Joe Shaver song and his excellent album with that as the title track - 'I'm just an old chunk of coal ... but I'm gonna be a diamond some day' - has been reissued on CD: Koch CD-7904. Not as good as his classic 'Old Five and Dimers Like Me' album, but great stuff. The song is also included on another great reissue - Willie N., Waylon J., Kris K. and Billy Joe S. 'Honky Tonk Heroes' Pedernales/Freefalls FFE 7008 2 - 10 Billy Joe Shaver songs done by that motley crew of Outlaws.

I need help. I have the words and chords to I'm just an old chunk of coal, but I can't play these chords.

The reason I ask for help is because I cannot transpose chords. I would like to play this in E or D.

Billy Joe Shaver was a great singer and an even better songwriter, but in my opinion this may well have been one of his best.
