Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: GUEST, Another conscience.... Date: 01 Apr 00 - 03:04 PM An ignominious award, though, and not one to be particularly proud of. |

Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: katlaughing Date: 01 Apr 00 - 04:02 PM Getting it correct would have been nice. My evil twin, Catspaw, had more postings, and, it's been well over a year for both of us. |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: The Shambles Date: 01 Apr 00 - 04:05 PM My thanks go to ALL those who have made and continue to make positve contributions of any kind to the Mudcat. |

Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: GUEST, The Thread Watcher Date: 01 Apr 00 - 04:15 PM How magnanimous of you Shambles, old stick |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 01 Apr 00 - 04:21 PM Now I take it the GUEST who liked my song wasn't the GUEST who apparently thinks the Mudcat is rubbish, but feels drawn to come here? Anonymity gets very confusing sometimed, which is why I think it's better to eschew it. (That's a great word isn't it?) |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: Caitrin Date: 01 Apr 00 - 04:47 PM Eschew obfuscation, McGrath. : ) |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: Mbo Date: 01 Apr 00 - 07:27 PM I'd like to mention JC's ABC Tune Finder. I'm not really sure if it's by a Mudcatter, but it should win an award anyway. The place is AMAZING! I can't begin to tell how many rare tunes I've found there! --Mbo |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: Coward Imposter 5 Date: 01 Apr 00 - 08:00 PM Dear Mrs Lafcat, A search of the forum shows that you have posted about a thousand more messages than catspaw during the last 12 months... We aim to please the gods |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: TTCM (retired) Date: 01 Apr 00 - 08:05 PM Thanks for the compliment, Shambles --the mere mention of who's name should evoke, Gregorian chants, and slow Wagner-ian music.> Your injection is waiting for you. Visit the Compassion and Honesty thread, of which we are card carrying members. TTCM --so many Catters, such little vaccine-- --but we're working on it!-- |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 01 Apr 00 - 08:10 PM Now "obfuscation" - that's a really good word, Caitrin. I don't think I've used it in my life. I plan to make up for lost time now.
But it's funny that - there are all kinds of words which I know perfectly well, but somehow I never get round to using them. Or words that I might write but would never get to say. (And of course there's a few the other way round...Not as many as there were one time though.) |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 01 Apr 00 - 08:16 PM Good heavens! Those kind comments are certainly more than I deserve. (Even if it is April 1st.) I do think it's important, though, that we share what we know or are able to discover. I've certainly learnt more so far than I've been able to contribute. Malcolm |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: Mbo Date: 01 Apr 00 - 08:26 PM "Confusticate and bebother it!" --Mbo |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: GUEST, Another conscience.... Date: 01 Apr 00 - 08:51 PM Congratulations Malc. |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: Lesley N. Date: 02 Apr 00 - 05:18 AM I'm extremely grateful and I am tremendously flattered, particularly to have kudos from Mudcat, which includes people who have so much knowledge and love for the music. Thank you! Though I don't know that BEST is the correct term. Maybe "Among the Best for the General Public and Most Annoying for Scholars" (who don't typically like the background music!) My site has benefited tremendously from Bruce's knowledge and I don't consider my site even in the same league as his. And there's Barry Taylor, who is in my opinion, the best midi maker on the web. These two gentlemen (and mudcatters) are the biggest reasons my site is as interesting and fun as it is. Thanks Bruce and Barry!
|
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: Jeri Date: 02 Apr 00 - 08:53 AM Lesley, maybe not "best" - there are other "bests" for various reasons. It's a site I return to again and again, for both music and information. It's easy to navigate and aesthetically pleasing at the same time - a combination of qualities rare in websites. |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: Rick Fielding Date: 02 Apr 00 - 12:19 PM Lesley, I concur wholeheartedly with Jeri. Any "awards" scare the bejeezus out of me, from Oscars to Grammys to "Dog-catcher of the year"....but letting someone know that their site is appreciated is one heck of a good idea. Yours (and Bruce's) is. Rick |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: Willie-O Date: 02 Apr 00 - 12:56 PM those cited in the first message are all swell folks and valuable contributors. But music ain't a competitive sport. Willie-O |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: The Shambles Date: 02 Apr 00 - 03:34 PM Despite the date of the first post, I beleive this thread to be well-intentioned, if a little badly timed, considering the present climate of presumed cliques and factions.
I do not think that music or contributions to The Mudcat are a competitive sport either and like all awards, says more about the motives of the award givers and judges that the talents of the winners (or losers).
Is it possible to know the constitution of this 'award team', does it consist of all those named above? Could we move a little more toward WHAT is said and done rather than the individuals that say or do it? Then things may be a little more peaceful? |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: The (totally unofficial) Mudcat Award Team Date: 02 Apr 00 - 03:47 PM Shambles, The idea was certainly well intentioned, my apologies if it was considered mistimed. As far as the composition of the 'team' is concerned, it's myself and several other 'catters with whom I regularly exchange personal messages. None of the people 'awarded' had anything to do with it. The intention was simply, amongst all the anomosity currently going on, to appreciate some of the 'stalwarts' My apologies if this backfired in any way. Maybe we'll try again next year :-) The (totally unofficial) Mudcat Award Team |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: Little Neophyte Date: 02 Apr 00 - 03:58 PM In my opinion, these are not awards, this is just someone posting their personal opinion. If we wanted to have Mudcat Awards, we would all decide on a Mudcat Award Committee that would make up different award catagories, and then all us Mudcatters would have an opportunity to nominate Mudcatters and we would have some kind of ballot box for voting. I guess, Mudcat Awards, could be a fun, lighthearted event on this forum. But that is not what I see here. Little Neo |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: Little Neophyte Date: 02 Apr 00 - 04:01 PM Mudcat Award Team, I did not see your posting before I posted mine. I am glad to see it now. Little Neo |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: katlaughing Date: 02 Apr 00 - 04:06 PM Thank you, LilNeo. Considering the flack I took in January concerning the amount I'd posted and NOT the content, I still have a hard time believing this was totally benign in intent. Perhaps it was just poor timing. |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: Amos Date: 02 Apr 00 - 04:52 PM kAT: THere has always been a plethora of people whose mission in life is to get others to stop communicating so much, to maike others be still, quiet and tractable. One of the ways they do this is by convincing you that your opposition is everywhere, wide-spread, generalized, or plural.
You should be proud of your high volume of communication, and seek to increase it.. |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: SDShad Date: 02 Apr 00 - 05:55 PM Well, I, bein' new 'round here, haven't heard too many of 'Catter's original songs yet, but I will chime in with praise for "White Snow of the Springtime," award or no award. It's a beautiful, well-written song, and of course it doesn't hurt to be introduced to it by Áine and Layne's lovely rendition. I brought home words and chords to this song Friday night after first hearing it on the most recent Mudcat Radio, and sang if for my wife (my home connection is too old and slow to support streaming audio very well). It's one of a handful of song's I've found difficult to learn until I "desensitize" myself to them a little, because at first their emotional impact is such that my eyes start to tear up and my throat tightens, pitch control goes, and if I'm not careful I'm soon a gibbering, bawling wreck: There Were Roses, The Dutchman, The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, Christmas in the Trenches, No Man's Land (Willie McBride), Long Long Time, and a few others. Add "White Snow" to that list. My wife fell in love with it immediately (once I was able to sing it without my voice breaking up), and suggested that I sing it right after "There Were Roses" as a sort of hopeful followup. Where else but the 'Cat can ya pick up a new original song from halfway around the globe so quickly and easily? I'll sing it in good company right next to any of the songs I mentioned. It's a hell of a song you've written, McGrath. Shad |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: Jon Freeman Date: 02 Apr 00 - 06:08 PM Shame, I don't seem able to get White Snow of the Springtime to play and would have liked to listen to it. I tend to be more into tunes than songs though and rarely pay much attention to words. As the best tune category has not been awarded (or perhaps thought of), I will make the award and I give it to Barry Taylor and Jeri Corlew for Barry's arrangement of Jeri's tune Dragonfly. Jon PS whith the exception of an award being made for the most prolific poster, I think that the "winners" have been well chosen. |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: SDShad Date: 02 Apr 00 - 06:21 PM Jon-- I've had a lot of 'Net congestion listening to the link McGrath gives above, but I'm on the other side of the pond. Odd. But, if you go to Mudcat Radio and listen to last Wednesday's show (#28, I think), it's the first song after the theme song and a bit of talk from our friendly hosts. Chris |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: Jon Freeman Date: 02 Apr 00 - 06:42 PM Thanks Chris, I was trying the first link and had not spotted that McGrath had corrected it. That link is working fine for me and it is a beautiful song. You have also reminded me to listen to the radio show. I usually listen to it live but had computer problems which started on Wednesday and took me a few days to get things restored by which time I had forgotten I'd missed an episode. Jon |
Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 02 Apr 00 - 08:04 PM Thanks for that. I never listen to the Radio live, because the time difference means it's on in the wee small hours for me - but just that night by chance I'd been up doing something, and I clicked it on on the spur of the moment - and there was Áine half way through the first verse... And I hadn't any idea it was going to be on anyway. Weird.
Serendipity rules the Cat OK! (Oh yes, if you want the words in print, with the chords I probably play, more or less, and some staff notation which might not be too reliable, click on this. |

Subject: RE: The 2000 Mudcat Awards From: SDShad Date: 03 Apr 00 - 09:32 AM *snerk* Now, that's an awards show that would go on even longer than the Oscars. "The nominees in the category of Best Lyric Request for obscure tragic ballads about salt-water invertebrates are...." Chris |
