But it's funny that - there are all kinds of words which I know perfectly well, but somehow I never get round to using them. Or words that I might write but would never get to say. (And of course there's a few the other way round...Not as many as there were one time though.) |

Date: 02 Apr 00 - 05:18 AM I'm extremely grateful and I am tremendously flattered, particularly to have kudos from Mudcat, which includes people who have so much knowledge and love for the music. Thank you! Though I don't know that BEST is the correct term. Maybe "Among the Best for the General Public and Most Annoying for Scholars" (who don't typically like the background music!) My site has benefited tremendously from Bruce's knowledge and I don't consider my site even in the same league as his. And there's Barry Taylor, who is in my opinion, the best midi maker on the web. These two gentlemen (and mudcatters) are the biggest reasons my site is as interesting and fun as it is. Thanks Bruce and Barry!

I do not think that music or contributions to The Mudcat are a competitive sport either and like all awards, says more about the motives of the award givers and judges that the talents of the winners (or losers).
Is it possible to know the constitution of this 'award team', does it consist of all those named above? Could we move a little more toward WHAT is said and done rather than the individuals that say or do it? Then things may be a little more peaceful? |

As far as the composition of the 'team' is concerned, it's myself and several other 'catters with whom I regularly exchange personal messages. None of the people 'awarded' had anything to do with it. The intention was simply, amongst all the anomosity currently going on, to appreciate some of the 'stalwarts' My apologies if this backfired in any way. If we wanted to have Mudcat Awards, we would all decide on a Mudcat Award Committee that would make up different award catagories, and then all us Mudcatters would have an opportunity to nominate Mudcatters and we would have some kind of ballot box for voting. I guess, Mudcat Awards, could be a fun, lighthearted event on this forum. But that is not what I see here. Little Neo |

It's a beautiful, well-written song, and of course it doesn't hurt to be introduced to it by Áine and Layne's lovely rendition. I brought home words and chords to this song Friday night after first hearing it on the most recent Mudcat Radio, and sang if for my wife (my home connection is too old and slow to support streaming audio very well). It's one of a handful of song's I've found difficult to learn until I "desensitize" myself to them a little, because at first their emotional impact is such that my eyes start to tear up and my throat tightens, pitch control goes, and if I'm not careful I'm soon a gibbering, bawling wreck: There Were Roses, The Dutchman, The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, Christmas in the Trenches, No Man's Land (Willie McBride), Long Long Time, and a few others. Add "White Snow" to that list. My wife fell in love with it immediately (once I was able to sing it without my voice breaking up), and suggested that I sing it right after "There Were Roses" as a sort of hopeful followup. Where else but the 'Cat can ya pick up a new original song from halfway around the globe so quickly and easily? I'll sing it in good company right next to any of the songs I mentioned. I tend to be more into tunes than songs though and rarely pay much attention to words. As the best tune category has not been awarded (or perhaps thought of), I will make the award and I give it to Barry Taylor and Jeri Corlew for Barry's arrangement of Jeri's tune Dragonfly.
