Hello Folks,

There is a place known as Fogarty's Cove just east of Half Island Cove. I'm from the area and have made the trip by boat several times. As with many of the local named inlets or coves it is not found on any map as stated. Stan spent a lot of time at his Uncle's cottage or as we call it camp which is not far from this area. I'm sure he was very aware of it's location.

The Folkscene Larman's have some great interviews with Stan, which they generally play every year. Write Ros and she can tell you when the next is coming up. Folkscene comes in great over KPFK's web site. See Folkscene.com

Tim - How do you pronounce your last name? Every time I see it I think there should be a "c" in it - is it pronounced as if there were?

Nope. Read the liner notes: "Fogarty's Cove. There is no such place. At least on any map." As far as I am aware there is no Wild Rose Chance, although wild roses grow in profusion along the coast of eastern Canada. I think that he was attempting to create an archtype of all the little villages he knew on the east shore of Nova Scotia.

But there is a Queensport, and a Queensport light, and a Half Island. They are along Chedabucto Bay. The area in question is where his family was from, although he and his brother Garnett were born and raised in Dundas, Ontario.

Tim, you say there's no such place called Fogarty's Cove? That it was just a figment of Stan's imagination? Can that be? I was picturing this ultimately picturesque place, like Peggy's Cove but warm and sunny and without tourists - and you say it doesn't exist?

Try to go to the area on the east shore he sings about in Fogarty's Cove. There is no Fogarty's Cove or Wild Rose Chance but the other places he mentions are there.

B.K. - I bought my Stan Rogers CDs in Halifax Nova Scotia at a music store a block from the public library. If you're ever in the area check it out! It might even be worth a special trip because while you're in Halifax you can listen to bagpips at the Citadel, look "down to the Narrows" as Stan does in one of his songs, and as long as you're in Nova Scotia you should really drive up to Cape Breton and search out the talented fiddle players and singers of that area.

No, I'm not a travel agent, just someone who loved her two trips to Nova Scotia and is planning on going back as soon as she can afford it. ;)

It is true that he didn't write any of the songs on that CD. Some are traditional. I was once told that he was pleased with his efforts on "For The Family" (which is on Folk Tradition out of the US) and planned to do an entire album of traditional Canadian folk songs. Alas, he died in the airplane fire before this could be done and we are the poorer for it.

BK, I think all of the Stan Rogers CD's are available from cdnow.com. I have to gloat that I finally found the 2-disk set called "Remembering Stan Rogers: An East Coast Tribute." It's a wonderful collection of Stan's songs, performed by various Canadian performers. Canadian recordings are hard to find in the U.S., even on the Web. I finally found it at Down Home Records/Arhoolie in Cerritos, CA.

Where did you buy that Stan Rogers CD? - it's one of the few I don't yet have..

STRINGS AND DORY PLUG

I'm going to tell a story, a funny one, you see,
About a Hazel Hiller. A married man is he.
His house is on the highway, and if the road comes through,
He'll have to tear his mansion down and build it up anew.

He's moved to many places, sometimes to Hazel Hill,
And sometimes into Canso. It seems he can't keep still.
But now I think he's settled down with his dear loving wife.
He bought himself a gramophone and lives a happy life.

One day he said to Dory Plug, "I've got to earn my bread.
I'm going straight to Lena's. I've got to use my head."
From her he bought a bicycle. What he paid her, we don't know.
He tied a box behind him. To Canso he did go.

From door to door he travelled, "Fifteen cents for one."
He couldn't make it prosper. It wasn't any fun.
His fish business is ended. He couldn't make it pay.
So then he said to Dory Plug, "I'll try another way."

But Dory got a little bored while hubby was away.
There wasn't anything to do to pass the time away.
There was one thing she wanted. She said to hubby, "Dear,
The time would pass more quickly if I had a rocking chair."

Well Strings said to his darling, "Your wish is my command.
To show how much I love you, I'll make you one by hand."
As Strings was such a handy man, by night the job was done.
He took that thing upstairs and said, "Now try this out for fun."

She sat down on the rocker while Strings went down below
To fetch a cup of coffee to help the evening go,
While Dory Plug above him was rocking back and forth
And singing to her Stringy-boy for all that she was worth.

But Dory got excited and rocked a bit too fast,
And as her heels swung higher, the chair gave way at last.
The floor gave way beneath her. Both chair and Dory Plug
Fell right into the coffeepot and broke their only mug.

So now my story's ended. It may get me in jail,
But there are many people who'd surely go my bail.
So if they come to get me to throw me in the jug,
I'll never forget that cardboard house of String and Dory Plug.

Stans album 'For the Family', has the lyrics for both of those songs. Also these songs were not written by Stan, but I believe they were writte by a relative.
