Does anyone know the words from Richard Stilgoe's introduction to the blues?

The first verse begins 'The first line of the blues is always repeated twice'

The second verse begins (and ends) 'There ain't no law that says the third line has to be different at all'

That's all I can remember!

YES!!! This is called "Poppa's Blues", lyrics by Richard Stilgoe, Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, from the musical "Starlight Express". I LOVE THIS SONG!

Hey hey! Poppa's gonna sing for us!
Poppa don't sing often, but he do sing mean!

First line of the blues
Is always sung a second time
First line of the blues
Is always sung a second time
So by the time you get to the third line
You'd have time to think of a rhyme!

Ain't no law sayin'
Third line gotta be different at all
Ain't no law sayin'
Third line gotta be different at all
Ain't no law sayin'
Third line gotta be different at all

Don't borrow no mouth organ
Not even from your best friend
Don't borrow no mouth organ ,br> Not even from your best friend
'Cause if you survive the blowin'
The suckin's gonna get you in the end!

Classic song! And all from memory! Phew!

Well gidday,

Assume we're talkin' 12 bar blues here, the old walkin', talkin' blues?

Since Mbo's had his adventure - and survived - I'll try and take up the thread, and compose on-line. Sidetrack Mbo - glad you made it - at your age I had to drive the same distance to get to the pub!

Now, Mbo, gotta try to get your verses into 12 bar format..;) _______________

First line of the blues Is always sung a second time First line of the blues Is always sung a second time So by the time you get to the third line You'd have time to think of a rhyme! ________________

I'd sing that as:

------------

First line of blues, Is sung a second time.

"Said", 1st line of the blues, is sung a 2nd time,

When you get to the third line,

Might have thought up a line.......

______________________________

Mbo, you havta have vocal dexterity to sing your words to a 12 bar blues - and I've drunk in more than 12 bars!

Sam

Billy, the song fits VERY well into the music, I'm not sure if it's 12 bar or not. Give me an e-mail address, and I can send you an MP3 of the CD track, or listen in on Hearme tonight, and I'll be glad to sing it for you!

Thanks for the words, Mbo - I remember hearing Richard Stilgoe do this on TV years ago.
