I'm also from Philly & I learned the song at camp in the 1960's. My memory of the lyrics matches those cited by Ken Hermonat, except the last 2 lines, which I don't remember.

I don't know the lyric with all the non-sequiturs.

The one that comes to mind is the Trout Fishing in America
also known as the scouts' version.

And the permutation I like best is:

Oh the noble duke of York
He had ten thousand men
He marched them up to the top of the hill
And he threw them out the window,
The window, the window,
He threw them out the window,
Marched them up to the top of the hill
And he threw them out the window

I was looking out the window the second-story window fell and sprained my eyebrow on the pavement, and pavement
go get the ax there's a hair and babies chin
Who built the shore so near the ocean, the ocean

My mother was from Philadelphia, and we sang this song on car trips when I was a kid (about 1965 or so):

Oh, I fell from a window,
A second story window,
And I caught my eyelash on the sill, the sill.
Go get an ax there's a fly in baby's mustache,
A boy's best friend is his mother,
I'm a moron you're another,
Absence makes the heart grow fonder,
P'roxide makes the hair grow blonder,
Christmas comes but once a season,
My father shot a horse.

For some reason that song popped into my head today, and I was wondering if it appeared somewhere on the web. Sure enough!

This is the way I remember my mother singing it:

Looking through the window, the second story window
When I caught my eyeball on the sill, the sill
Someone get a hammer, there's a fly on baby's cradle
Man's best friend is his mother
You're a liar, you've been drinkin
Peroxide makes your hair grow blonder
My father bought a horse
Yay, Pop!

Ok, here's the version we sang at Har Zion day camp outside Philadelphia circa 1967:

The only girl I know
Has a face like a horse and buggy
Down by the lakeside
The fireman saved my child
The fireman climbed the ladder
The child was bigger than the fireman
My teeth are dripping
Hang out the ice to dry

While peeking through the keyhole
At papas wooden leg
Who'll wind the click while I am gone
(Wind the clock while I am...)
Go get the axe, there's a flea on baby's head
And a boys best friend is his mother, his mother

I fell out a window, a second story window
I caught my eyelash on the windowsill
On the windowsill,
I've got a pain, and I think it looks like rain....
Pink pills for pink people with pink pimples
Whoo-whoo!

My mother used to sing this song she learned at Camp Windywood in Pollock Louisiana in the early 1940's.

This is how I remember her singing it:

I fell from a window, a second story window. I caught my eyelash on the window ceil... go get the Listerine sister's got a date, a boys best friend is his mother there's no other, you been drinkin' and it's stinking.... something something.. no other.. >>>??? and I can not remember the rest.

I learned the song from my mother (who was also from Brooklyn, where she grew up in the 40s), in another slightly different variation:

I fell from a window, a thirteenth story window
And caught my fourteenth eyelash on the sill, the sill
Quick! Get a doctor, there's a fly on a baby's mustache
A man's best friend is his mother
You're another
Presence makes the heart grow fonder
Absence makes it last much longer
Carrots cost a bushel a dollar
My mother shot a horse - BANG!

"Absence makes the heart grow fonder" is the way we sang it. Thanks for the reminder, Joelass.
My father was from Brooklyn. My daughter is teaching this to her daughter, they live In MI. YEA!

This is great! I loved reading all the different versions. My mother's went like this:

Looking through the window, a second story window,
I fell and sprained my eyebrow on the pavement, pavement.
Run get the axe. There's a hair on baby's chest.
Who cut the sleeves off papa's vest, his vest?

Looking through the knothole in grandpa's wooden leg.
Who will wind the clock when I am gone, gone?
We feed our baby garlic so we find him in the dark.
A boy's best friend is his mother, his mother.

The horses run around - their feet are on the ground.
Why did they build the shore so near the ocean, ocean?
Run get the Listerine - sister wants a beau.
We hope that Granny's teeth will soon fit Jenny, Jenny.

Oh, he has a wooden leg and uses thumbtacks for his garters.
The onion is a husky vegetable, ble.
A snake belt never slips because he has no hips,
And his waistline comes up below his necktie, necktie.

I learned a different version in Girl scouts. Makes me think of the telephone game, with all the little changes.

A snake fell out of a window,
A second story window,
And left his eyelash on the sill, on the sill.
Don't lose your head,
There's a flying baby mustache.
A man's best friend is his mother,
You're a genius, I'm another.
Distance make the heart grow fonder,
Peroxide makes the hair grow blonder,
Yule-tide comes but once a year,
My Father shot a tree, BANG!

A snake's belt slips because he has no hips,

(not) totally unconnected, and first verse missing (if ever there was one) about a fire. This recitation.

...
Suddenly, though the smoke, on the second floor,
We saw a face, a human face,
Framed in a window.
And it cried "Help! Help! Save Me! Save me!"
So we stretched out our bit of tarpaulin and said:
"If you jump into this here tarpaulin, you'll be safe."
And would he jump?
No.
And the flames went up higher & higher.

Suddenly, though the smoke, on the third floor,
We saw a face, a human face,
Framed in a window.
And it cried "Help! Help! Save Me! Save me!"
So we stretched out our bit of tarpaulin and said:
"If you jump into this here tarpaulin, you'll be safe."
And would he jump?
No.
And the flames went up higher & higher.

Suddenly, though the smoke, on the fourth floor,
We saw a face, a human face,
Framed in a window.
And it cried "Help! Help! Save Me! Save me!"
So we stretched out our bit of tarpaulin and said:
"If you jump into this here tarpaulin, you'll be safe."
And would he jump?
No.
And the flames went up higher & higher.

... (continued for as long as you can get away with, by now people should be joining in!)

Suddenly, though the smoke, on the top floor,
We saw a face, a human face,
Framed in a window.
And it cried "Help! Help! Save Me! Save me!"
So we stretched out our bit of tarpaulin and said:
"If you jump into this here tarpaulin, you'll be safe."
And would he jump?
Yes.
And he broke his bleedin' neck!.

So I heard it this way from my mom (who grew up in Northern Kentucky in the 50s-60s). Pretty similar to Mark and Lily...

I was looking out a window, a second story window
When I caught my eyeball on the sill, the sill
Someone get a hatchet, there's a flying baby's cradle
A man's best friend is his mother
You're a liar
You've been drinkin'
Peroxide makes your hair grow blonder
Onions make your breath smell stronger
My father bought a horse
Yay, pop!

When my friends and I sang it in New York City in the late 1950s, early 1960s, we incremented the story in each chorus, something like,

Jack and Jill went up the hill/To fetch a pail of water/Jack fell down and broke his crown/And threw it out the window, the window/The FIRST story window/Jack fell down and broke his crown/And threw it out the window,

then Mary threw her little lamb out the SECOND story window, Jack Horner threw his plum out the THIRD story window, and so on.

oh who will wind the clock when I'm away, away.
A snake's belt always slips, just because he has no hips.
And a boy's best friend is his mother, no other!

Looking out a window, a second story window,
I fell and sprained my eyebrow on the pavement, the pavement.
Go get the axe, there's a hair on baby's chest!
And a boy's best friend is his mother, no other!

Does spearment lose its flavor on the bedpost overnight?
We feed the baby garlic so we find him without light.
Quick! Get the listerine, sister's got a beau!
And a boy's best friend is him mother, no other.

Looking through a knothole in Father's wooden leg

Go get the Listerine, sister wants a beau
And we hope that grandma's teeth will soon fit Jenny, fit Jenny

Horses run around their feet are on the ground

Here's the way I learned it (Philadelphia, around 1962 or so):

I fell from a window, a second story window
And caught my eyelash on the sill, the sill
Go get an axe, there's a fly on baby's mustache
A boy's best friend is his mother

Presents make the heart grow fonder
Peroxide makes the hair grow blonder
Christmas comes but once a season
My father shot a horse
Bang! Bang! Ne-e-e-i-i-i-gh!

That's how I learned it, though I don't know how it might have been taught to the person I learned it from. I do remember that my sister and I would laugh hysterically when we got to the line, "...there's a fly on baby's mustache." But those were simpler times.

Aloha,
Mark

Subject: Lyr Add: Thrown Through The Window
From: Nigel Parsons
Date: 14 Aug 03 - 05:41 PM

For a fuller version of "Thrown through the window", which has already been quoted as a Scout song:

THROWN THROUGH THE WINDOW

Under the spreading chestnut tree,
The village smithy stands:
The smith a mighty man is he –
But we'll throw him through the window.

        The window! The window!
We'll throw him through the window.
The smith a mighty man is he –
But we'll throw him through the window.

The boy stood on the burning deck,
And he refused to leave:
He said, "When this deck gets burnt out –
I'll throw it through the window."

Old Mother Hubbard she went to the cupboard,
To get the poor dog a bone:
But when she got there the cupboard was bare –
So she threw it through the window.

Little Jack Horner sat in a corner,
Eating his Christmas pie:
He put in his thumb and pulled out a plum –
And he threw it through the window.

Little Miss Muffett sat on a tuffet,
Eating her curds and whey:
There came a big spider, and sat down beside her –
So she threw it through the window.
Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water:
Jack fell down and broke his crown –
So she threw him through the window.

Hey diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon:
The little dog laughed to see such fun –
So they threw him through the window.

The above is copied from 'The Hackney Scout Song Book' (1938 edition) which in turn refers to "The Camp Song Book" published by the YMCA as being a source for the music.

But when she got there, the cupboard was bare,
So she threw him out the window, the window, the second story window,
She threw him out the window."
"Old King Cole was a merry old soul
And a merry old soul was he;
He called for his pipe and he called for his bowl
And he threw them out the window, (etc)."

My brothers and I used to sing a song by the same name, but it was a nursery rhyme game. It went like this:

The window, the window,
the second story window,
if you don't sing a nursery rhyme,
we'll throw you out the window!

(recited)Mary had a little lamb,
it's fleece was white as snow
and everywhere that Mary went,
she threw it out-

The window, the window....(etc.)

(continued with various nursery rhymes similarily twisted...)

Sound familiar to anybody?

And his waistline is just below his neckline

Peeping through the knotholes in Grandpas' wooden leg
Why do they build the shore so near the ocean, the ocean
Go get the Listerine, sister wants a beau
And we hope that grandma's teeth will soon fit Jenny

They spanked hm with a shingle, which made his panties tingle

Go get the axe there's a flea on Lizze's ear
And a boys best friend is his mother!
