Callocon, you can get the lyrics here. Although, I must warn you, this is considered a folk/blues site...I am always glad to help, but some people don't really think requests of this kind have any place here. Sorry to seem so disheartening...join up for the ride anyway, even though rock & roll isn't our emphasis. You'll have more fun than you can imagine!

Callocon, this being a folk/blues forum, you'll probably not always find the best luck looking for rock 'n' roll lyrics here (and you may even get the odd flame for it, but never you mind). That's why, with Digitrad/Mudcat as my primary lyric source, I also use the OLGA (Online Guitar Archive), which is officially shut down, but still has a search engine for mirror sites at its main page. When I roam a bit (as I often do) from things canonically "folk," it helps.

A search for this song at their search engine yields several results. One can be found by following the blue clicky thing.

Best,

Chris

Mbo, one of the more helpful souls hereabouts, snuck that one in under me, Callocon. I second his invite. Pull up a stool, have a pint. You may like it here!

Could it be that some lazy body is asking for this lyric just so they don't have to sit down with a tape and take down all those millions of words themselves ?

...and I feel fine.

Well.. I'd call it close enough to folk for my tastes...
The people who are rabid mudcatters shoudl maybe just relax a bit, or try broadening thier minds...
But I'm not naming names, so if ya take offence to that, then yer probably one of them!! LOL!!!

I'm just glad callocon didn't try to say it was by Great Big Sea, like someone else I met online once...

That was certainly why I went looking for the lyrics. For a while, I was pretty sure even Michael Stipe didn't know them.

Thanks for the info on "It's the End of the World". To Clinton Hammond, I do like GBS version of the tune. If you get a chance to see GBS, I would recomend it. Thanks Again to all who replied. I'm going to have that pint now and stay awhile!

I don't know from REM, presumably this isn't the Skeeter Davis (?) weepie with the spoken bit in the middle "Why does my heart go on beating? Why do these eyes of mine cry? Don't they know it's the end of the world? It ended when you said "Goodbye".
RtS (yes, another one I "sing" along with when I've had too many!)

REM is one of those weird bands on the fringes of "folk" that seem to spring out of the "Alternative" scene (Violent Femmes are another one, but that's another discussion)

If you accept one of the definitions of folk (and let's please not get into the big "what is folk" again... this is a tentative definition used to illustrate a point) as music that gets passed down, mutates, and generally outlives the author, REM may have a shot at it. Most acoustic guitar players I know usually have at least one REM cover in their rep, and I've been to far too many parties where when "End of the World" comes on, everyone from 20-50 chimes in and tries to sing along with their own version.

Wait and see, I guess. Maybe it'll last, maybe it won't.

M

callocon

I've seen GBS 3 or 4 times, and I think they are a drastically over-rated band... Seeing them in a pub or festival setting is much preferable to seeing them in a theatre or a place like the Ark in Ann Arbour... I can think of many Canadain bands that are much better, but didn't get the $$ support from the major lables that GBS did...

Like The Irish Decendants, Tamarack, Mad Pudding, Fear Of Drinking, The Paperboys, just to name a few...

Hell, plenty of our local bands her in Windsro are better musicians than GBS... They are a great party band, but the music is mostly fluff...
