Subject: Lyr Add: JEANNIE MCCOLL From: Kelida Date: 03 Apr 00 - 09:35 PM JEANNIE MCCOLL CHORUS: Oh, She's a fine wee lass, a bonnie wee lass, is bonnie wee Jeannie McColl; I gave her me mother's engagement ring and a bonnie wee tartan shawl; I met her at a wedding at Co-operative Hall, I was the best man and she was the belle o' the ball. 1. The very first time that I met her she was awfully, awfully shy, The rain cam' pourin' doon, but she was happy, so was I. We ran like mad for shelter an' we landed up a stair, The rain cam' poorin' out of me breeks, but, och, I didna care: For. . . [cho.] 2. Noo I've wed me Jeannie, an' bairnies we have three, Two daughters and a fine wee lad that sits upon my knee. They're right wee holy terrors an' they're never still for lang, But they sit still and listen every night while I sing this song: Oh it's a. . . [cho.] I've looked all over the 'net for this song, but I finally found a good recording of it, so here is one version of the lyrics. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jeannie McColl From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 03 Apr 00 - 10:33 PM Are you in a position to post the tune? The lyrics you give remind me of I'm No' Comin' Oot The Noo (sung by the Stewarts of Blair, and featuring Jeannie McKay in the first verse) which sounds as if it might be a parody of the song you've got here. Where did you find it? Malcolm |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jeannie McColl From: Kelida Date: 05 Apr 00 - 12:06 AM Unfortunately no, I don't have a tune for it (and sorry I didn't see this until now), but I actually have at least 2 different recordings of it. One is by a Cincinnati-based singing group called the Happy Daggers, although they seem to have added an extra verse of their own (very funny, I might add). Their site is at: http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Arena/8032. You can probably order the CD its on called "The Happy Daggers Unplugged." They also have another album called "Three Little Words." Another is by another Ohio guy named Vince Conaway (a very good cittern player and singer) from his CD "Going Back." His webpage is at: http://vinceconaway.com/frames/index.html. Again you can probably order a copy of the album. There may also be some sort of sound file of it on the site, but I'm not really sure. In any case, I recommend both of these artists to you and anyone else out there that sees this. Hope that helps a little. Peace-- Keli |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jeannie McColl From: Jimmy C Date: 22 Oct 01 - 11:20 AM I know this song and i have the tune in my head. It was recorded years ago by a Toronto based group (The Bonny Scots), I may have one of their old LPs around. A fairly fast tempo somewhat like a jig. I will try to figure oout some way to post the notes. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jeannie McColl From: Scabby Douglas Date: 22 Oct 01 - 11:37 AM I posted on the other thread - I've sequenced an approximation of this tune.. - how do I post it here? It is only an approximation, cause I'm at work ( or supposed to be).... How can I post it? STeven |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jeannie McColl From: Mac Tattie Date: 22 Oct 01 - 01:29 PM No, there is no lirical conection between "Bonny We Jeannie McCall" and "We'r No'Commin'Oot the Noo". The tunes are similer-ish in a vague sort of way, which has more to do with the tempo and style of performance. cheers. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jeannie McColl From: GUEST,Paul Hurrell Date: 08 Aug 13 - 03:55 PM My mother sings this nearly every time we visit, she's 74 now, and remembers the song from when she was a wee lass growing up in the tenements. If you go onto youtube and enter the title, you will get a lovely surprise! I just downloaded it so she can enjoy it sung on a mandolin. |
