He probably used that system invented by Alexander the Great that used an hour glass to mark the hours and a rag with 12 knots in it tied around his wrist. Everytime the hourglass got turned over you would rotate the rag by one knot, so you could keep track of the hours. It was popularly known as Alexander's rag time band.

Unfortunately I can't claim to have invented it. It came from a Canadian scientist during his seminar on micowave spectroscopy of symmetric top molecules about 35 years ago.

I know the songs in "G" there's a few chords missing here and there for me.
It's tough trying to break it down from his piano playing. A lot of fills with his left hand.
