Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Know My Love From: Thompson Date: 20 Jan 17 - 11:51 AM Mardyke is an area by the river Lee in Cork. The verses are more or less those I used to sing as a child, though there were words added in, for instance "I'd make *him* a suit of the finest kind". And it was always "by his eyes of blue" for me. Here's Luke Kelly and the Dubliners singing it, and here's Jimmy Crowley and Stokers Lodge. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Know My Love From: Richie Date: 19 Jan 17 - 06:44 PM Hi, This is a fairly early published version from Journal of the Irish Folk Song Society, London, Volume 2; by Irish Folk Song Society in 1904. "I Know My Love" Helen Laird Since contributing the little fragment I knew of this South Irish song (with the tune) in the last issue of the Journal (Vol. I., pp. 52~3), I have obtained two more verses from Donut None, of Ennis, Secretary of the local branch of the Gaelic League. He got the verses from somebody in Clare. Nono's father was a Belgian, an organist, and his mother a Clare woman. I now give the complete song. H- L I know my love by his way of walking, And I know my love by his way of talking, And I know my love drest in a suit of blue; And if my love leaves me what will I do? Chorus: And still she cried, I love him the best, And a-troubled mind, sure, can know no rest. But still she cried, Bonnie boys are few. And if my love loves me, what will I do? If my love knew I could wash and wring, And if my love knew I could weave and spin, I could make a suit all of the finest kind. But the want of money it l'aves me behind. Chorus. Alas, my love he's an errant rover. And, sure, he'll travel the wide world over, For in dear old Ireland he'll no longer tarry, For an English damsel[1] he'll surely marry. Chorus. There is a dancehouse in Mar-(a)-dyke, And 'tis there my dear love goes every night; And he takes a strange one all on his knee, And don't you think but it troubles me? Chorus. 1. I have substituted " damsel " for a courser word [whore] which I got in the original; it is more usually sung as above. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Know My Love From: AmyLove Date: 18 Jan 17 - 09:24 PM The lyrics as sung by The Corrs (found here ) I know my love by his way of walking And I know my love by his way of talking And I know my love dressed in a suit of blue And if my love leaves me, what will I do? chorus: And still she cried, "I love him the best, And a troubled mind, sure can know no rest" And still she cried, "Bonny boys are few, And if my love leaves me, what will I do?" There is a dance house in Maradyke And there my true love goes every night He takes a strange girl upon his knee Well now don't you think that that vexes me? chorus: And still she cried, "I love him the best, And a troubled mind, sure can know no rest" And still she cried, "Bonny boys are few, And if my love leaves me, what will I do?" If my love knew I can wash and wring If my love knew I can sew and spin I'd make a coat of the finest kind But the want of money sure leaves me behind chorus: And still she cried, "I love him the best, And a troubled mind, sure can know no rest" And still she cried, "Bonny boys are few, And if my love leaves me, what will I do?" I know my love is an arrant rover I know he'll wander the wild world over In dear old Ireland he'll no longer tarry An American girl he's sure to marry chorus: And still she cried, "I love him the best, And a troubled mind, sure can know no rest" And still she cried, "Bonny boys are few, And if my love leaves me, what will I do?" chorus: And still she cried, "I love him the best, And a troubled mind, sure can know no rest" And still she cried, "Bonny boys are few, And if my love leaves me, what will I do?" What will I do? |

Subject: RE: Req. I know my love From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 23 Aug 02 - 09:28 PM The Queen of Hearts is in the DT, with tune; transcribed from a Joan Baez record: QUEEN OF HEARTS. Baez recorded a (shortened) arrangement of the song collected by Sabine Baring Gould in Devon in 1894; unusually for her, she specifically acknowledged her source, though the DT file makes no mention of this. Martin Carthy, too, recorded an arrangement of the Devon set, which was "Sung by a workman engaged on the Burrow-Tor reservoir at Sheepstor, the water supply for Plymouth, 1894". Baring Gould commented, "The ballad has the flavour of the period of Charles II" which is rather a long way from saying that it actually dated from that period, or that any Jacobite sentiment is implicit. He also mentioned a broadside edition by Bachelar, beginning O my poor heart, my poor heart is breaking-Another issue of this can be seen at Bodleian Library Broadside Ballads: The queen of hearts Printed between 1831 and 1837 by W. Wright, 113, Moor-Street, Birmingham. |
Subject: RE: Req. I know my love From: Jimmy C Date: 23 Aug 02 - 09:20 PM Ciaran, My mother used to sing this song, and her words are almost exactly the same as yours, except she sang "Ardent Rover" rather than "Errant Rover". All else is the same. |
Subject: RE: Req. I know my love From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 23 Aug 02 - 08:59 PM I'm not aware of any evidence that The Queen of Hearts is Scottish, or has any specific historical reference; what would be your source for that? I Know My Love is generally considered to be an Irish variant of the large song group that includes The Tavern, Died for Love, and so on, and which is widespread throughout the English-speaking world. |
Subject: RE: Req. I know my love From: michaelr Date: 23 Aug 02 - 08:50 PM CraigS -- would you please post the text of "The Queen of Hearts"? Thanks, Michael |
Subject: RE: Req. I know my love From: Alice Date: 23 Aug 02 - 07:15 PM I have a copy of the old Hughes "Irish Country Songs" collection that has I KNOW MY LOVE in it, if anyone wants a scan of the sheet music as he collected and published it about 100 years ago. |
Subject: RE: Req. I know my love From: CraigS Date: 23 Aug 02 - 07:08 PM There is a confounding here - There is a song, THE QUEEN OF HEARTS, which is of Scottish origin, and relates to the marriage of Elizabeth, who was the elder sister of James I of England, and a very nice person, to the ELector of Hanover, who was a complete pillock save for the fact that Elizabeth loved him dearly. The Queen of hearts does not come with the chorus - Martin Carthy did a very nice version - I know my love is later, Irish, and sets the same events into a more common surrounding. While I know my love is more commonly known, much of the sentiment and meaning (Jacobite in nature) is lost in it

Subject: RE: Req. I know my love From: GUEST,dick greenhaus Date: 07 Apr 00 - 05:12 PM If you enter the four words I Know My Love, you get hundreds of hits--all the songs that contain those 4 words in any order. If you enclose the four words with squart brackets--[I Know My Love]--it tells the computer that it's a phrase, and you get two hits, one of which is what you want. |
Subject: RE: Req. I know my love From: GUEST,Bruce O. Date: 07 Apr 00 - 03:53 PM It's in the 1st book of Herbert Hughes' 'Irish Country Songs'. |

Subject: RE: Req. I know my love From: Peg Date: 07 Apr 00 - 10:17 AM hmmm...well when I first saw this "Black is the Colour" occurred to me, since that line starts one of the verses...but I also thought of "I love my love" since each verse ends with "I love my love because I KNOW MY LOVE loves me." However, regarding the actual song in questions, a woman who goes to the Boston Singers' Club sings this sometimes. Once when I requested it she could not recall the title. She sings "bonny boys" for "pretty boys"...
and the chorus as she sings it goes like this: I can ask her for her lyrics if y'all want... peg |
Subject: RE: Req. I know my love From: Wolfgang Date: 07 Apr 00 - 08:10 AM Mike, I believe you. That thingie has a life of its own and more than once I haven't found a song which actually was in there (twice, I even typed song lyrics which were already in there). For example, if you go to the alphabetic list of songs above, find 'I know my love' and click on it happily, you'll get 'Black is the colour'. I've not the slightest idea why. If you click then on 'next entire page' you'll get what you want. I did find it by entering [I know my love] as a phrase which finds you two songs, one of them is correct. Of course, you might have made a mistake like a typo, but that's only one of several possibilities, and not the most probable. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Req. I know my love From: GUEST,Mike Ireland Date: 07 Apr 00 - 07:47 AM Honest Wolfgang, I did I did I did try the thingie in the corner but it didn't work for me. It must be your 'experience' at these things :-) This is what I was after - many thanks, and thanks to Calach. I knew the mudcat wouldn't let me down. Mike |
Subject: RE: Req. I know my love From: Wolfgang Date: 07 Apr 00 - 06:04 AM Mike, what do you mean you tried the thing in the corner? That the song "I KNOW MY LOVE" in the database (complete with lyrics and midi) is not the one you are looking for? If so, please give more lyrics. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Req. I know my love From: Calach Date: 07 Apr 00 - 04:42 AM I know my love by his way of walkin' I know my love by his way of talkin' I know my love by his suit of blue.... And if my love leaves me, what would I do. Still we know pretty boys are best And a troubled mind never knows no rest Still we know pretty boys are few..... And if my love leaves me, what would I do. If this is the song (an' I think it is) then maybe under "pretty boys" or another variation of song title. If any problems, I will eventually get the lyrics for you. Yours, Calach |
