Help: what type of tape to use

I'm really getting some good answers to some of the basic questions I've been asking. Here's another one. (no laughing please) What kind of tape do you recommend for taping your song lists on your guitar? I've used scotch tape and it's hard to get off. It doesn't seem to damage the finish though. Is masking tape OK, or is there a better alternative? Thanks, Joeler

I'm such a bad singer that I use old broken tapes, just the shell of the cartridge actually. Then on playback I imagine how fine I sound.

Spaw-Who will use damn near anything that one of the kids hasn't gotten to first. You cannot hide blank tapes from teenagers.....Sorry joeler

Spaw, he's going to have to install some electronics in his guitar before the type of tape you described will work.

Anyway, Joeler, here are two thoughts. Regardless of what kind of tape you use, fold over about 1/4" (6 mm) of the end of each tape strip, sticky side to itself, to form an easy to grap handle for peeling it off in the future. It might also be possible to find some self-adhesive labels to write your lists on, that would hold better than post-it notes but peel off easier than other kinds of tape (be sure to fold one side or corner over as described above). I don't know which kind of labels to recommend, but be careful because I'm sure some of them stick like the dickens. Hope this helps.

Yep. Folding the ends of the tape over to make a "courtesy-tab" works great. Also a big of magic, before you take the tape off, cool it down. I usually get all hot and gunged up, and the tape leaves a real mess, but running an ice cube over it to cool it off avoids leaving all the little gummies. Elle

I have never attatched song lists or any other notes to my guitar but here is a thought that maybe stupid. Would it be possible to stick some form of plactic wallet on the guitar in some way that would allow it to be removed relitavely painlessly if the guitar was to be sold and simply make some cards that could be inserted/ removed as neccessary?

I don't know about guitars specifically, but in most cases electrical tape tends to stick to stuff and pull off easily without leaving a residue or pulling paint off.

Chocolate Pi (who realizes that this is one case where duct tape is not a universal solution)

Sorry, I just couldn't resist the other type of tape.

There is a painter's masking tape for fine line masking, generally blue in color, which works EXTREMELY well and is RESIDUE FREE. Like most tapes, it says it is not recommended for lacquered surfaces, but I have used it extensively to mask lacquered surfaces while SPRAYING lacquer and the stuff is fantastic. Its made to peel of easily even though its left on a long time. Try it...you'll like it.

This one is not a joke folks..... Its great tape.

Guest up there said "postits" (or "Post-Its"). They make a removable glue which is pretty much the same stuff as what makes Post-Its stick. You can gum up the back of anything, slap it on your guitar, and peel it off later.

Scotch "Magic Tape" is supposed to be removable, but I don't know if it really is.

I wonder if anyone's ever made a wide guitar strap with a little plastic pocket to insert set lists? ...or flat picks, for that matter.

Well Mbo I tried taping them to my recorder but they simply fluttered around and got in my way. They really interfere with the sound of the bodhran if you tape them to the skin. Taping them to my forehead means they're tricky for me to read, though not for my partner, so maybe we should each tape a list to our foreheads (should we use surgical tape? what are some hypoallergenic tapes?). Most audience members are too far away to see through any lights easily and anyway they don't stay still. I guess the guitar is the place to stick it.

We just write them on Steno paper and put them on the floor beside the water jugs. Large print, of course. But we don't use Set lists, either, just a gigantic Play List, and "feed" off the audience.
