In grade school I learned a song that nobody seems to remember. It goes something like: "Hey, ho! Anybody home? Meat nor drink nor money have we none. Yet, we will be very, very merry!" It seems like I'm missing another verse, but I can't remember it...help!!! I wanna sing it for my kids...

Tametha:
I don't think you're missing any verses. It's a round that goes:
"Hey, ho, nobody home. Meat nor drink nor money have I none..."
Right there, the next person starts the same verse. This keeps on going forever and ever and ever and ever... and you get the point.

The song works well as a quodlibet (in harmony with) Shalom, chaverim, Wade in the Water, and the refrain from the Native American chant, Hey, yanna, ho yanna, hey, yan yan (The Earth is our mother).

The lyrics I know are on the previous thread, as the Soul Cake song. I believe it is one of the many wassail songs that used to be sung around about Christmas/Yuletide time of year.

You can find a version of it at www.peterpaulandmary.com. They called their version of it "A'soulin'". I saw the lyrics there.

That, and more, may be found through the link Ed provided earlier in this thread.  It's unlikely that Hey Ho has any connection at all to any of the Souling/Soulcaking songs (which belong to All Souls rather than Christmas), other than that Peter Paul and Mary thought it would be nice to stick Ravenscroft's round together with one -possibly two- of them, along with another unrelated verse from a carol.  It may have been someone else a little earlier, but the fact that PP&M appear to claim copyright in the song suggests to me that that was them.

From The Knight of the Burning Pestle by Francis Beaumont, edited by Raymond Macdonald Alden (Boston: D. C. Heath & Co., 1910). The play was first performed 1607, and published in 1613:

Enter another Boy.

2. Boy.
Sir, I can get no bread for supper.

Mer. Hang bread and supper! let's preserve our mirth, and we shall never feele hunger, I'le warrant you. Let's have a catch, boy; follow me, come. Sing this Catch.
Ho, ho, no body at home!
Meate, nor drinke, nor money ha wee none,
    Fill the pot, Eedy,
    Never more need I.
Mer. So, boies; enough. Follow mee. Let's change our place and we shall laugh afresh. Exeunt.

I learned it as:

Hey ho nobody home nor meat nor drink nor money have I none yet I will be merry hey ho nobody home.

And then you repeat it and someone joins in singing the same verse.

I learned this just today in Choir class, in fact, I was looking for the next few verses, there are about four. The two I know go,

Hi, ho! Anybody home? Meat nor drink nor money have I none. Still I will be very merry, hi ho anybody home, hi ho.

And then there's something about a bird and why does it fly in the shadows at such an hour of night, I believe.

the song is also old trad scouting song
we still sing it around campfires
whilst doing a canoe paddling action...
very soft at start as you paddle towards a house on the river
hey ho anybody home
meat or drink or money have i non
yet i will be merry.....
louder as you pass the house then
goes away quietly down river

sounds lovely if done right

(Wish I remembered vs 1 :()

God bless the master of this house
And the mistress also
And all the little Children
Around your table grow
The cattle in the stable
The dog at your front door
And all the little children
Around your table grow.

And it is a soulen song. I was taught
This song in high school by an awesome
Teacher by the name of George Georgetti.

Well the song lyrics are: Hey, ho anybody home? Meat nor drink nor money have I none! Yet I will be merry anyhow. That's the first part. you're supposed to sing it together with 2 more parts. That is how I did it anyway. One person sings this part once, then when they start again, someone else sings this part:
2.
I say (fast) (now normal) hey ho heeeeeey hooo. repeat (going lower)
Then after some time another person starts
3. (go high, then low on Hooooo.)
hey, ho, heeeeeyy hooooo. Repeat
Then all end at the same time, all on Hey! 1st person ends on Hey!
Second ends on i say hey, and third person ends on hey.

I trying to locate the artist that recorded the song in around the 40's. I use to own a old Picture disc 78 on this records. It sounded like the Andrew Sister but it's not. It had a like the Big Band Sound to it with female vocals.
Hi Ho anybody home, no meat no drink no money do I own, still we will be merry, (then it jazz's it up a bit) we will be merry Hi Ho.

Any help would be appreciated. Mikepsyche1@gmail.com

the first verse is repeated and you start over again from the second or first verse. i learned it like this

hey ho nobody's home
meat nor drink nor money have i none
yet we will be very very merry
hey ho nobody's home

there is no puncuation for a reason except for the apostrophe because there was none on the paper.

Mike - My family had that same picture record when I was a child - which is what sent me to this post. I'm working on a project to digitize old family albums for my siblings and believe it or not, dreamed about this one last night - have to ask my mom if she still has this record and if so, will post again who the artist was.

An oddity: the first publication of the music, by Thomas Ravenscroft

http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/ravenscroft/songbook/hey_ho.html

doesn't match Beaumont and Fletcher's words (quoted by Jim Dixon upthread), though the two were published close together.

You could maybe make it work by adding B&F's extra half-line to make the round into six parts instead of Ravenscroft's five. Anybody want to try that?
