Subject: Lyr Add: BRING BACK MY BOY (Carter Family)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 04 Oct 12 - 04:39 PM

I just listened to this song on Spotify and transcribed it. Nothing quite matching it has been posted at Mudcat, although 2 related versions from other singers are in the DT under the title WANDERING BOY. Verse 3 below is not present in those versions. Also, Wysiwyg has posted a version called WANDERING BOY in the thread called The first song of the Carter Family. That version has my verse 3, but it also has another verse that is not in this recording, and it also contains some differences in wording that might be mondegreens. I don't know how to explain this. Did the Carter Family record two (or more) versions with different titles? Or did Wysiwyg post the lyrics from memory and conflate two versions?

BRING BACK MY BOY
As sung by The Carter Family on "Carter Family Favorites" (2012)

1. Out in the cold world and far away from home,
Somebody's boy is wandering alone,
No one to guide him and keep his footsteps right.
Somebody's boy is homeless tonight.

CHORUS: Bring back my boy, my wandering boy,
Far, far away, wherever he may be.
Tell him his mother, with faded cheeks and hair,
At their old home is waiting him there.

2. Out in the hallway there stands a vacant chair.
Yonder's the shoes my darling used to wear.
Empty the cradle, the one that's loved so well.
How I miss him, there's no tongue can tell. CHORUS

3. Oh, could I see him and fold him to my breast,
Gladly I'd close my eyes and be at rest.
There is no other that's left to give me joy.
Bring back my boy, my wandering boy. CHORUS

Subject: Lyr Add: LONESOME FOR YOU (A. P. Carter)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 04 May 05 - 10:49 PM

I found this while looking for something else, so I figure I'd better post it here.

Lyrics copied from http://www.silcom.com/~peterf/ideas/carter4.htm

LONESOME FOR YOU
(A. P. Carter)

Now, I know what it means to be lonesome,
And I know what it means to be blue,
And I know what it means to be lonesome in dreams
When there's someone missing you.

'Cause I've tried and I've tried since we've parted,
And there is no one knows what I gone through.
I'd give all that I own just to have you back home
'Cause I'm lonesome, lonesome for you.

My best friend left me this morning
As the clock was striking four,
And the smiling face of my darling
I may not see no more.

Now I know what it means to be worried,
To be all lonesome and blue,
For the one that I love so dearly
Has turned her back on me.

Oh, my mind is full of sorrow
And my heart is filled with pain,
And I feel so broken-hearted,
Won't you please come back again?

'Cause I've tried and I've tried since we've parted,
And there is no one knows what I gone through.
I'd give all that I own just to have you back home
'Cause I'm lonesome, lonesome for you.

thanks, Masato...but I finally had a hunch! I had tried 5 different browsers, and found nothing--and then I said.."Bill, you have NOT tried Internet Explorer!"....guess what?...there is some little code that prevents the link to the songs from displaying in other browsers.

It looks like this (with [ ] substituted for < >)

[noscript] [p][a HREF='baz_head.php']Home Page[/a] [/noscript]

In the blasted M$ browser, I finally saw the link! (it is quite interesting to "view source" on the page!)

I have no idea why this was done, but I consider it quite tedious! I do NOT like IE, but suspect I am stuck with it to look at Honking Duck

All the words of songs by the original Carter Family are transcribed in a hardcover book acccompanying In the Shadow of Clinch Mountain, 12-volume CD set released by Bear Family (BCD 15865 LK) in 2000. Border Radio recordings are not included. Jerry Dallal suggests a lot of corrections in his website: Songs of The Original Carter Family (See also Index). Incidentally he did Charlie Poole transcriptions HERE.

The Honkingduck site, linked to by Susan above, contains 88 songs, with Carter Sisters & Mother Maybelle's 3. 50 songs, with 27 Border Radio recordings, can be heard HERE.

Marion, that Carter Family site has a lot of errors in the transcriptions. Don't take them at face value-- compare them, before you use them, to what you hear in the recordings.

Lot of good recordings hearable onlineHERE.

Subject: Lyr Add: KISSING IS A CRIME (Carter Family)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 05 Mar 02 - 09:07 PM

This song was mentioned in the thread Part lyrics- Some say that kissing's a sin, so I thought I'd better post it here. I copied the lyrics from http://www.icdc.com/~fmoore/carterfamily/kissing_is_crime.htm but corrected an obvious error or two.

KISSING IS A CRIME
(Carter Family)

I know a little girl and I want her for my wife.
She's pretty and sweet, neat little feet, and never been kissed in her life.
You can ask her for a kiss. She says, "Oh, what a bore!"
Every time she vows and declares she'll never do so any more.

Born to be a better girl and never kiss again.
Afraid my ma might find it out and cause her great pain.
You may walk and talk and hold my hand, but kissing is a crime.
I'll not kiss you anymore until next time.

I called at her house one night but I didn't intend to stay.
She laid her head on my shoulder and said, "The old folks are away."
I kissed her a dozen times and someone came to the door.
Every time she vowed and declared she'd never do so any more.

She'll see you to the door, kiss and then goodnight.
Every time she vows and declares she'll never do so any more.

Subject: Lyr Add: JIM BLAKE'S MESSAGE^^
From: Dale Rose
Date: 03 Oct 00 - 08:13 AM

In another thread, SH asked for the lyrics to Jim Blake's Message. Since it is part of the Carter Family Decca recordings that Jim Dixon started here, I figured this was the place to put it. Note that in my last "thread killing" post of 3 May 2000, I said I would post any and all of the Decca recordings that anyone asked for.

Jim Blake's Message
as recorded by The Carter Family, June 17, 1937

"Jim Blake, your wife is dying!"
Went over the wires tonight
The message was brought to the depot
By a lad all trembling with fright
He entered the office crying
His face was terribly white
"Send this message to dad and his engine
Mother is dying tonight!"

In something less than an hour
Jim's answer back to me flew
"Tell wife I'll be there at midnight
I'm praying for her too."
I left my son in the office
Took the message to Jim's wife
There found the dying woman
Was scarce of breath and life.

O'er hill and dale and valley
Thunders the heavy train
It's engine is sobbing and throbbing
And under a terrible strain
But Jim hangs on to his throttle
Guiding her crazy flight
And his voice cries out in the darkness
"God speed the Express tonight!"

I telephoned the doctor
"How is Jim's wife?" I ask
"About the hour of midnight
Is long as she can last!"
In something less than an hour
The train will be along
But here I have a message
Oh God, there is something wrong!

The message reads, "Disaster!
The train is in the ditch
The engineer is dying
Derailed by an open switch."
And there's another message
To Jim's wife it is addressed,
"I'll meet her at midnight in Heaven
Don't wait for the fast Express!"

From Charles K. Wolfe: Jim Blake's Message is, according to Sara, from a ballet they got "out toward Kentucky." This performance, as well as a transcript and song history, is presented in Norm Cohen's 'Long Steel Rail: The Railroad in American Folksong.' His research has dated the song to the 1890s, but no one seems to know if it was based on a true experience or not. A.P. copyrighted his version of the song on January 5, 1938 - almost six months after he recorded it.

As I mentioned on April 13, the second volume from Decca would surface eventually, More Favorites By The Carter Family, Decca 4557, probably about 1964. Notes were by Ralph Rinzler.

The album includes My Home's Across The Blue Ridge Mountains, You Better Let That Liar Alone, Cuban Soldier, No Depression, Reckless Motorman, Just Another Broken Heart, Bring Back My Boy, Never Let The Devil Get The Upper Hand Of You, Jim Blake's Message, My Native Home, St. Regious Girl, and Walking In The King's Highway.

As I said before, I will post any of the songs from either album that people want to see. Just let me know.

Still more lyrics to "Jealous Hearted Me" come from recordings by Minnie Pearl, who squawked out this tune regularly: "You can have my coffee, you can have my tea/but just you let my feller be, I"m jealous, jealous-hearted me/ I'm just as jealous as I can be/Now, I like victuals, sauerkraut/I take my mail on the rural route/I'm jealous,jealous-hearted me/I'm just as jealous as I can be./Take your dominic rooster and your shanghai hen/get a 'fer' piece away and don't you come again/I'm jealous, jealous-hearted me/I'm just as jealous as I can be."

Subject: Lyr Add: JEALOUS HEARTED ME^^
From: Dale Rose
Date: 13 Apr 00 - 01:41 AM

This one was easy, no rough spots to worry over. Only question would be who REALLY wrote it, my guess is that this is one of the A. P. Carter originals. It's got some of those really nice long guitar breaks between each verse. As far as I know, this original version has never made it to CD, just the lp I mentioned above, 37 years or so ago, though I can't imagine how it got to be 37 years in such a short time.

Jealous Hearted Me
(A. P. Carter)

Takes a rockin' chair to rock, takes a rubber ball to roll
Takes the man I love to satisfy my soul
Because I'm jealous, jealous hearted me
I said I'm jealous, jealous as I can be

Got a stove in the kitchen, and it bakes nice and brown
But I need a poppa to turn the damper down
Because I'm jealous, jealous hearted me
I said I'm jealous, jealous as I can be

You can have my money, you can have my home
But for goodness sakes, women, let my man alone
Because I'm jealous, jealous hearted me
I said I'm jealous, jealous as I can be

Gonna buy me a bulldog to watch while I sleep
To watch that man of mine on his midnight creep
Because I'm jealous, jealous hearted me
I said I'm jealous, jealous as I can be

Found one of them sooner than I thought I would ~~ A Collection Of Favorites By The Carter Family, Decca lp 4404. It is undated, but back then I usually noted on the back when I purchased albums ~~ in this case, June 21, 1963. I suspect it hadn't been in the racks very long when I got it.

Songs on it are: Hello Stranger, My Dixie Darling, Oh Take Me Back, Little Joe, Stern Old Bachelor, Sweet Heaven In My View, You Are My Flower, Jealous Hearted Me, You've Been A Friend To Me, The Wayworn Traveler, Coal Miner's Blues, Funny When You Feel That Way. (Notation on back: All Selections Composed By A. P. Carter)

I'll start with a transcription of Jealous Hearted Me. Help me out by letting me know what else is needed. (I am sure the other Decca will surface later)

Jealous Hearted Me is on one of the two original Decca LPs, neither of which I can locate at the moment without digging. MCA/Decca obviously dropped the ball in their reissue, but I suppose we should be thankful that they did what they did do, even if it was not complete. I will try to find the albums and transcribe the missing songs later, but not likely anytime soon.

It wouldn't surprise me if Joe or MAX picks up the correction from the thread. In general, I think it's helpful to them to use the automated prefex dropdown list when posting new lyrics. That makes the thread easily identifiable later on and notifies the rest of us that this might not be the best place to carry on a discussion about the posted song(s).

If I have things right, they only add material to the DT once or twice a year, or whenever they get time. I don't think there is any implied committment to getting newly submitted material into the DT right away. In the meantime, we can have access to the new material by searching the forum.

Mark: Thanks for the tip about the air/hour mistake. You're probably right; "air" makes more sense. I can usually understand the Carters. Their accent is pretty close to the way my father spoke. He grew up in western Kentucky. But I've lived in Minnesota all my adult life and I never hear that accent now.

By the way, while transcribing these songs, it was a great help to be able play the music CD on my computer's CD-ROM drive. It's easy, when you don't understand something, to back up a little and replay it. I recommend this technique.

Now, how do we get that correction to Joe Offer?

Jim,

Let me add my thanks for the CF tunes. They are each my favorite song as are all CF numbers. I've been meaning to add a few myself but wanted to get the ABC or MIDItext or whatever together first.

For a real treat, get hold of "Jealous Hearted Blues" by Ma Rainey. I don't know but I'm guessing that her recording preceded the Carters'. It's funny to hear her swinging lowdown hot blues rendition and then listen to the Carters' squared-off version sounding so painfully... uh, white. I still love to hear both versions.

I may be wrong but I think the second verse of "You Are My Flower" begins: The *air* is just as pure. I know it sounds like they say hour but that's just their accents. In "Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone" they go out of their way to make the word poor sound like purr as in "purr unworthy grave."

Thanks again,

- Mark

A recording of the Carter Family singing 'Jealous Hearted Me' can be found on The Carter Family 'On Border Radio 1939 Vol 1' Arhoolie CD 411. I don't know whether it's the full song, as I have never heard it elsewhere. The recording has 3 verses and chorus. It is on the same track, but discrete, following a rendition of 'Engine 143' by the then 10-year-old June.

Jim,

Can you please recommend a source for "Jealous Hearted Me"? Has it been recorded on CD or new compilations of the Carter Family.

Thanks

YOU DENIED YOUR LOVE
(A. P. Carter)

That was the day when you went away. You broke my heart in the month of May.
That little ring I gave to you, was to show you, dear, my love was true.

Sweet are the flowers of our friendship, that has bloomed our whole life through.
But ne'er forget though you're far away, they're blooming in my heart today.

You denied your love but you proved it so. You came to see me when the sun was low.
You broke my heart but you were kind, when you said, "Oh, dear, you'll never be mine."

Oh let me tell you what love will do, if you love a boy that don't love you:
They'll break your heart, they'll leave you 'lone, they'll roam the west so far from home.

YOUNG FREDA BOLT
(D. M. Shanks, 1930, arr. A. P. Carter)

Amid the Blue Ridge Mountains there lived a maiden fair,
Whose life was pure as heaven, whose heart was free from care.
She dreamed of love and romance, with heart so glad and free.
No gloom within the future young Freda Bolt could see.

Nearby lived Buren Harmon, a boy she loved so well,
And of these two young lovers a story I will tell.
'Twas late one Thursday evening, the stars were shining dim,
That Buren called his sweetheart to come and go with him.

He told her on tomorrow that they would surely wed,
But little was she thinking he'd take her life instead.
They motored to Bent Mountain, a place so dark and lone,
And there her form so helpless he placed beneath a stone,

Away from home and mother that Freda loved so well.
The bitter pain and anguish no mortal tongue can tell.
Through tears she pled for mercy, but heeding of her cry,
Young Harmon left his sweetheart in agony to die.

We think that God in heaven must surely heard her cry,
And sent a band of angels to linger very nigh,
And bear her spirit over to yonder's happy shore,
Where dying comes no never, and parting is no more.

DARK-HAIRED TRUE LOVER
(A. P. Carter)

I once had a dark-haired true lover. She was all this world to me.
She promised herself to another. Now, don't you think this was mean?

(Chorus:)
Take back every word you have spoken. Let it be as though we never met,
For tonight I'm a poor boy heart-broken. I'll forgive but I'll never forget

I was young when I wrote my first letter. I blotted the lines with tears.
But now I am old, I know better. We've parted for many long years. (Chorus)

Oh, Ruth, Oh, Ruth, how I love you. You just seem to me like a bird,
Although you went back on your promise, although you went back on your word. (Chorus)

We parted in the month of September. Some says we parted for life.
But I hope someday or another I'll call you my sweet darling wife. (Chorus)

I wish I had someone to love me, someone to call me their own.
For I'm out in this wide world a-wand'ring. I'm tired of living alone. (Chorus)

OH, TAKE ME BACK
(Trad. arr. A. P. Carter)

Woke up this morning and I could not keep from cryin'. (2x)
My good gal left me with a troubling mind.

Oh, just look where that evening sun has gone. (2x)
Gone down behind the mountain and it won't be back till morn.

Oh, hand me that long distance phone. (2x)
Gonna talk to my honey all night long.

Oh take me back and try me one more time. (2x)
And if I don't do, then send me down the line.

CHARLIE AND NELLIE
(Trad. arr. A. P. Carter)

Dear Nellie, since I left the city, I find I've changed my mind.
I hope you won't think me untruthful, or do me the least unkind.

I think we're both mistaken. I know you'll never suit me.
I owe my heart to another. Of course, kind friends will agree.

Please send me my ring and pictures, also my letters and books.
I close with many kind wishes. Respectfully yours, Charlie Brooks.

I heard all about it, dear Charlie. I knew it would end this way.
I hope you will always live happy with your loving little wife, Miss Grey.

Now here's your ring, dear Charlie. Don't give it to her, I pray,
Unless you tell her 'twas once mine. I wore it one year today.

One year today, dear Charlie, so happy were we both.
You vowed you'd never forsake me, but I find you untrue to your oath.

Here's your picture, dear Charlie, it's almost faded away,
Because I kissed it so often, and this you can tell Miss Grey.

As far as your letters, dear Charlie, I burned them as they came.
I feared my reading them over would cause our love to enflame.

I must say goodbye, dear Charlie. My letter is near an end.
Remember I'm always and always forever and ever your friend.

YOU'RE NOTHING MORE TO ME
(Lyr. A. P. Carter, tune modified from "An Old Man's Story" by Carson Robison, 1928.)

Tonight we part forever. You're nothing more to me.
The chain that bound us is broken. Not a tear I'll shed for thee.
So break the heart of another just as you have broken mine.
Go tell her that you love her and call her fondly thine.

Here, take this ring you gave me, which was so dear to me.
Go give it to another, it's nothing more to me.
When you gaze upon the engraving, will you think one time of me?
You've broken my heart forever. Not a tear I'll shed for thee.

Goodnight, goodbye forever. You're nothing more to me.
You've broken my heart forever. Not a tear I'll shed for thee.
I must say goodbye, my darling, never more to meet again.
I will ask of you a promise: Will you meet me up in heaven?

BONNIE BLUE EYES
(Trad. arr. A. P. Carter)

Goodbye, my little Bonnie Blue Eyes. Goodbye, my little Bonnie Blue Eyes.
You've told me more lies than the stars in the skies. Goodbye, my little Bonnie Blue Eyes,

I saw my little Bonnie last night. She looked so dear to me.
She's the only girl I ever loved. She's now gone back on me.

Oh, stand at the gate and weep. Oh, stand at the gate and weep.
Oh, stand at the gate and weep and mourn. Oh, Bonnie, won't you love me once more?

Come and lay your hand in mine. Come and lay your hand in mine.
Come and lay your arms around my neck and say that you will be mine.

Oh, you know what you promised me. Oh, you know what you promised me.
You promised that you'd marry me. Oh, you know what you promised me.

I've stayed in the country too long. I've stayed in the country too long.
The only wrong that I have done, I've stayed in the country too long.

Come and go with me to the train. Come and go with me to the train.
Come and go with me and see me get on. Goodbye, my little Bonnie, I'm gone.

LOVER'S LANE
(A. P. Carter)

I first met you down in Lover's Lane.
You were just like an angel with angels' golden wings.
We walked along. We sang a song. The birds were singing too.
It seems like heaven's here on earth just to be again with you.
You're just a girl of my dreams, though it seems that my dreams never come true.

At night we'd sit out in the old porch swing.
The stars were shining brightly and softly you would sing.
You'd sing of happy days gone by. It makes me happy, too.
It'd be like heaven here on earth if I could be with you.
You're just a girl of my dreams, though it seems that my dreams never come true.

I first met you down in Lover's Lane.
You were just like an angel, my little brown-eyed Jane.
We walked along. We hummed a song. The birds were singing too.
It seems like heaven's here on earth just to be again with you.
You're just a girl of my dreams, though it seems that my dreams never come true.

You're just a girl of my dreams, though it seems that my dreams never come true.

COAL MINER'S BLUES
(Lyr. trad., tune by Sara and Maybelle Carter.)

Some blues are just blues. Mine are the miner's blues. (2x)
My troubles are coming by threes and by twos.

Blues and more blues, it's the coal-black blues. (2x)
Got coal in my hair, got coal in my shoes.

These blues are soul blues. They are the coal-black blues. (2x)
For my place will cave in and my life I will lose.

You say they are blues, these old miner's blues. (2x)
Now I must have sharpened these picks that I use.

I'm out with these blues, dirty coal-black blues. (2x)
We'll lay off tomorrow with the coal miner's blues.

IN THE SHADOW OF CLINCH MOUNTAIN
(A. P. Carter)

I grew up on the side of Clinch Mountain, with the beauties and the music of the wood.
The sweet song of the bright bubbling fountain, and the warble of the birds I understood.

(Chorus:)
When I've sung my last song in the evening, and the sun sets in the golden west,
All the scenes of this world I'll be leaving. In the shadow of Clinch Mountain I will rest.

"Long ago," said the oak and the cedar, singing deeply in a whisper of the past,
"Stood not then this great towering leader, nor the fountain where the crystal gems are cast." (Chorus)

Then I asked how this green lofty mountain in the cauldron of the lonely desert stood.
Said this song of the bright sunny fountain, "We were given by the waters of the flood." (Chorus)

Out that gate I have passed since my childhood, o'er the railway through the tunnel to the west,
Singing songs of the Clinch Mountain wildwood, songs that people found in birds of the best. (Chorus)

HELLO STRANGER
(Trad. arr. A. P. Carter)

Hello, stranger. Put your lovin' hand in mine. (2x)
You are a stranger, and you're a pal of mine.

Get up, rounder. Let a workin' man lay down. (2x)
You are a rounder, but you're all out and down.

Every time I ride the sixth-and-fourth-street car, (2x)
I can see my baby peeping through the bar.

She bowed her head. She waved both hands at me. (2x)
I'm prison bound. I'm longin' to be free.

Oh, I'll see you when your troubles are like mine. (2x)
Oh, I'll see you when you haven't got a dime.

Weeping like a willow, mourning like a dove. (2x)
There's a girl up the country that I really love.

(Repeat first verse.)

YOU ARE MY FLOWER (this version has 2 more verses than the one in DigiTrad).
(A. P. Carter)

The grass is just as green; the sky is just as blue.
The day is just as bright; the birds are singing too.

(Chorus:)
You are my flower that's blooming in the mountain for me.
You are my flower that's blooming there for me.

The hour is just as pure; the sunlight just as free.
And nature seems to say it's all for you and me. (Chorus)

So wear a happy smile and life will be worthwhile.
Forget your tears and don't forget to smile. (Chorus)

When summertime has passed and snow begins to fall,
Just sing this song and say to one and all. (Chorus)
