I've been trying to remember for the past couple of days who recorded this song??? It's a woman but I can't for the life of me recall who it was. It's from the early 70's, I think. Anyone?

Hi Beanster,

Although Jesus built his own cross, by trying to change the world, then had to carry it, I'm pretty sure the song title you are trying to find is "Jesus was a Carpenter".

And all I can remember of the female singers of the 60s was someone like Joni Mitchell, or.. mind's blank.

Can't find it in DT, but am going through an AltaVista search - some 500 hits for "Jesus was a Carpenter".

So far only references to the song are:

Johnny Cash (not female)

There's a lot of references to Elvis, wheww...

That's better "-elvis" takes it to 288

So, here goes again...;)

Ahha....

You'll find a midi file (can't be bothered doin' the blue clicky thing at)....

http://free.ntv.it/midi_music/midifile/spiritual/Spiritual_main.htm

But, it doesn't sound like the tune I recall..|>(

You'll find the Johnny Cash version on record

Sorry Beanster - have to give up - my connection is shot - I've only got ¼ way through the AV pages, and keep getting 404s.

BUT - I'm positive the song you're looking for is "Carpenter", not "Crossmaker"..

Will try again tomorrow if you have had no luck.

Cheers - Sam

JESUS WAS A CROSS MAKER
Written by Judee Sill and recorded by Judie Tzuke

Sweet silver angels over the sea
Please come down flying low for me

One time I trusted a stranger cos I heard his sweet song
And it was gently enticing me though there was something wrong
But when I turned he was gone

Blinding me his song remains reminding me
He's a bandit and a heart breaker
Oh but Jesus was a cross maker

Sweet silver angels over the sea
Please come down flying low for me

He wages war with the devil, a pistol by his side
And though he chases him out windows and won't give him a place to hide
He keeps his door open wide

Fighting him he lights the lamp inviting him
He's a bandit and a heart breaker
Oh but Jesus was a cross maker

Sweet silver angels over the sea
Please come down flying low for me

I heard the thunder come rumbling the light never looked so dim
I see the junction get nearer and danger is in the wind
And either road's looking grim

Hiding me I flee, desire dividing me
He's a bandit and a heart breaker
Oh but Jesus was a cross maker

Sweet silver angels over the sea
Please come down flying low for me
Stay with me till dawn

Ed

Yes, that's it, Judee Sill! I used to have an album with her recording of it. Thanks so much, everyone! (And for the lyrics, Ed). And even though it was a different song you were thinking of Billy the Bus, thanks for the time you obviously put in to help. Now I can sleep again at night! lol

There were some good souls preaching on the seafront at Sidmouth and they had a full size cross. After a hard days converting, one of them had to carry the cross home. This chap surprised me, as he came out of a side street and under my breath I heard myself say 'Jesus Christ'!!!
