Does anyone no a melody for these words?
The Packers' ships are Northward bound;
There is one that sails to-day.
Her skipper's got his orders
To proceed to Bristol Bay.

The anchor's up, the topsails set
The sky looks kind o' murky,
But fair or foul, she's comin' back
With choice Alaska turkey

They are refered to as an old Packers Shanty on page 225 of Bassil Lubbock's, book the Down Easters. The reference is to the Alaska Packers Ships that sailed from San Francisco to the Alaska canneries through the early 1930

Hi Dick, nice to see you about. Sorry don't know anything about Alaskan Packing Shanties, but I did want to say hi & let you know you're not being ignored. I'm heading off to a fest. in a few minutes. Tomorrow I'll be seeing & singing with a bunch of salty unwashed sailor types, I'll ask around. If I pick up on anything I won't have you waiting till Mystic, I'll send it along though I'm pretty slow these days since my box caught a virus & died. Would you say hi to Ricky for me. Barry

Hi Dick! I'm glad I started checking out your inquiry. I haven't come up with a melody, but I did find a great site. This guy is into knot tying (as I am) and has knot tying supplies. He also carries a number of books by Basil Lubbock. Here's the address: http://www.angelfire.com/ak/skateworld/ . See you, Margo

Say Dick, haven't I heard you sing this? Did you make up your own tune, or did you find one?
