Marcus,A wonderful song. The Planxty lyrics are in the database, just type in Jolly Beggar where it says Digitrad Lyrics Search and click go. The chords as I play them are:

Verse
G/C/D 2nd line:G/C/G/D 3rd:G/C/D 4th:G/C/G/D

Chorus
G/C/D 2nd:G/C/G/D 3rd:G/C/D

I keep my ring finger on the D note (2nd string,3rd fret) for the G and C chords. Planxty launches into a complex reel called The Wise Maid at the end of it, my partner (bodhran and lap dulcimer) and I (guitar) play Redhaired Boy/Little Beggarman at breakneck speed at the end.

Frankie

And instead of the D as the last chord of the chorus, put in G.

You're right Bob, I didn't get that quite right. For the last "We'll go more a'roving" I just play a G. Thanks.

And of course the Wise Maid is also called All Around The World (and probably other things). I love the tune.

It is a great tune Jon but beyond my grasp. I could learn all the parts but remembering them and putting them together is another story. How the hell do they do it!

I can't find my Planxty tape to remind myself of what they do but the Wise Maid is only a 2 part reel (possibly with variations second time round). From memory, Planxty do something like this. They play an 8 bar lead in of their own from the Jolly Beggarman to the Wise Maid which is bars 3 to 10 in my example and then they go into the Wise Maid which I have written as 2 A's and 2 B's

Thanks for the tune, it's pretty close to Planxty's with some slightly different ornamentation, beautifully played by the way. I went back to the LP and to the transcription in "The Mandolin Fake Book" and remembered that what hangs me up is getting the impossibly long (to me,anyway) phrase that begins in the 2nd measure of the B section right. I'll give it another go.

I think that this is a version of the song "The Oul' Rigadoo" or "Oul' Johnny Doo" as sung by the Clancys, my mother and Grandmother and just about anyone in the Belfast of my youth. Annraoi

Jon, you play the mandolin don't you?, and Frankie.

Take out the old 'Well below the Valley' album. Wipe the dust off the old grooves.
And stick on 'Hewlett'

Have Andy's counterpoint mandolin part off for this time next week. There's the 'homework' now *BG*

AC, Yes I do play mandolin and both the Wise Maid and Hewlett are in my repertiore although I don't play Andy Irvine's bit.

I have just dug the album out and am playing it as I am typing. Even if I don't get the counterpoint, I'm gald you reminded me of it.

Jon
