Date: 30 Apr 00 - 09:09 PM You are right (left) about Barry Weisledder -- I bit my tongue a number of times, especially about the Clarity Act as a fundamental threat to Canadian democracy -- I have a friend in the NDP Quebec inner circle, and even she thinks the whole thing is pretty ridiculous. It is interesting that for a guy who is in the Substitute Teachers Brigade he is so pro-union when the main Teacher's Union totally screwed the Substitute Teachers last year to save their own skins. Arnie had said he hadn't sent a copy to Fresh Air - so either Jeff found it himself or Arnie/Chris sent it and forgot. Anyway it was good to hear the track on what is a great morning program. Now only if the CBC would drop MetroMorning and replace it with more intelligent programming, but that's another subject. Nice meeting Mudcatters I hadn't met before, by the way. Rana |

It was a pleasure to meet black walnut, her husband Bill and her friend Jeff. I also got to meet Rana and had the pleasure of sitting beside Tony. Growhugger, it was nice to finally meet your mom who I have heard so much about. You are fortunate to have such a good friend as a mom. Well the evening was a real treat. Arnie & Chris were such an inspiration for me. I will create a new thread for their concert review. Keep an eye out for it. Little Neo

Steve, my once a year guest, Barry weisledder is to the left of Marx, Lenin, Engels, Billy Bragg and INOBU, all put together. He edits the Socialist Action Newspaper, which is "Trotskyite" in it's views. Oddly enough the other "guest" who dropped in - author, cabdriver, and boxing expert, Peter McSherry, is perhaps the most RIGHT WING friend I have. The banjo can be such a melodic instrument, as was evidenced by the first tune they played. Would have liked to hear a lot more playing and a lot less politics (sorry Rick, I can be a bit liberal, but that guy was left of Santa Claus). I might add that Mr. Fielding did a very nice job on the five-sting himself. I wish I could attend on Saturday, I would really like to hear these fellows live. Unfortunately I have a family commitment.

Maybe Mom'll be in town, too, and you can meet her. Dearie me. I don't have a Mudcat t-shirt, and I won't be carrying my cello, and I don't think "drooling" will single me (or LN) out of this crowd. So who's gonna get Arnie & Chris to ask how many of those present frequent the Mudcat so we can find each other?

(Shameless minor correction - though TRANZAC and Cloud seem to have become interchangeable). Trust I'll be able to meet some local mudcatters who I haven't actually met there. I should be easy to recognise - beard and glasses, (oops - probably describes 35% of audience) - will add "of (East) Indian heritage with English accent" Also will point out, venue is non-smoking (smokers can retire to Southern Cross bar which is separated by 2 doors), kids are welcome and if they are 12 or under there is no charge (loose definition of age), and a good time should be had by all. So here he is...in the "flesh" (and it's not a pretty sight I'll tell ya) I haven't heard it yet, but these guys are fine musicians and I expect it to be excellent. I'll play a couple of cuts on the radio show tommorow night and if at all possible be at the Tranzac on Saturday. Rick |

Subject: RE: Banjo music in Toronto From: Little Neophyte Date: 23 Apr 00 - 08:54 PM Well I have Arnie & Chris' CD 5 Strings Attached With No Backing and these boys are exceptionally skilled and 'hot'(as they say in banjo talk). From what I understand Chris Coole plays and sings in the bluegrass band called the "One Horse Town" and is also Toronto's most noted old time banjo busker. Arnie Naiman and Kathy Reid-Naiman play a variety of instruments and songs as a duo called "Ragged but Right" Kathy Reid also plays guitar on this CD. She is a children's musician and currently has two recordings available on Merriweather Records. They are all members of "The Extraordinary Stringband" and often play music for old time country dances in the Toronto area. I like what Arnie says on the back of his CD cover "playing the banjo can have serious consequences" I am beginning to understand this myself. But they are very good consequences. This will sure be a worthwhile concert to see. Little Neo |
