Well, Challenge!rs -- Spring has sprung for most of us, and of course, at this time of year, every species experiences a little flutter of the heart and then, well, instinct takes over...

Perhaps inspired by his own 'instincts', our own Bradypus has suggested the Challenge! topic of "first crushes and the opposite sex moving from pain in the *rse to "Why has God blessed me with a sex drive and acne at the same time!??". An excellent and timely suggestion.

So, there you go Challenge!rs -- Songs about 'your first love and/or crush'. Now I know we've all gone through this -- let's see what you can put to a tune!

I was almost engaged once. Didn't work out (obviously). UGH!!! I thought I repressed those memories. . . I guess I can remember long enough to write a song. . . Ah, the trials of youth (not to mention the temporary insanity).

Lotsa comments, but no songs...So, I guess I'll start things off. My first 'crush' was in the first grade, when kids are more prone to express their affection with teasing and physicality. My song is based on a true story -- whether it's mine or not, I'll just leave that to your imagination...*BG*

A Tomboy's Ode To Love
(Tune: Both Sides Now/Joni Mitchell)

Don't call me that or I'll smash your face
I'll spread you, boy, all 'round this place
Just 'cuz I like you, don't make a case
For you to call me that

I don't even let Mama say my first name
Though she gave it to me, it's just the same
If you'd been stuck with something that lame
I know you'd feel this way

Chorus:
So go on, bubba, say it loud
If you want to attract a crowd
The kids will see me lay you out
You're just the cutest thing, you see!

Moon me, goose me, pull my hair
Don't say my first name, don't you dare!
What can I say to put a scare
In you to shut you up?

Although you laugh and point in fun
I know you'd like to buzz me one
Your words are mean, but I know I've won
You like me too, I'd say

So go on, bubba, say it loud
If you want to attract a crowd
The kids will see me lay you out
You're just the cutest thing, you see!

Ah come on now, don't be a wimp
You knew I'd win, don't be a simp
Just lean on me if ya hafta limp
That's a neat-o bruise right there

Let's go play king-of-the-hill
I'll let you win, promise I will
We've got all afternoon to kill
So let's be friends, OK?

So go on, bubba, say it loud
If you want to attract a crowd
The kids will see me lay you out
You're just the cutest thing, you see!

I can dream, Can't I?

You wait, little man, on an empty porch,
For her to get her coat on.
Your life, little man, is bathroom floor
That girls will want to dump on.
To dump on. ____

You are fourteen going on fifteen,
Sonny, it's time to think.
Better be wary, Be canny and careful,
Sonny , you're on the brink.

You are fourteen going on fifteen,
Those girls won't wait in line.
Seniors and juniors, and even sophomores
Will beat you out all the time!.

Totally unprepared are you
To go out with a women
Timid and shy and scared are you
of doing something stupid.

You need some-one older and wiser
Telling you what to do-o
My sister's eighteen, going on nineteen!
She will take care of you!

This is not the best thing I have ever written. Nor is there any music for it. But here goes:

Ballad of Rejection Amergin

I see her smile In my dreams I hear her laughter And what it means I watch her eyes Look into mine To touch those lips My heart does pine.

We talk for hours Into the night I watch her face By the streetlight As we smoke Our cherries bright Her face it glows Like candlelight

Now I am walking On the rail ties Singing to myself To kill the sighs Of being alone Because you see Her bright eyes Never shine on me

So I am drunk today I am seldom sober I stagger on The constant rover From bar to bar In this great town But I am sick now So lay me down

Oh boy, is my face red!! You're absolutely right, Bradypus, it wasn't you -- It was Hyperabid who suggested this Challenge! -- And I apologize to both of you . . . But, you didn't have to yell -- See my song above to see what happens to fellas that do that to me...*BG*

MMario -- Am I crazy (on second thought, don't answer that) or could you sing your song to 'Sixteen Going On Seventeen' from The Sound of Music??? Great song, dear -- But, do we get a version from your sister??? Oh yes, and what's the title?

Amergin -- Your song is just lovely. I always go for the sad ones! I especially liked:

Now I am walking
On the rail ties
Singing to myself
To kill the sighs
Of being alone

However, if you do come up with tune, do you think you could send this song to Max for the Mudcat Radio? I'd love to hear this performed. Well done, A.!

MMario - I really enjoyed that!

Tune: The Wild Mountain Thyme

Oh The Springtime, It Is Come

Oh the springtime, it is come
And my acne, it is blooming
My face is red with spots
And my lank hair needs some grooming
Will ye come, lassie, come

Chorus

And we'll both go together
To do who knows what or why
In this foul springtime weather
Will ye come, lassie, come

In the spring to love I turn
With my hormone levels rising
And I'd love to find a girl
But that would be quite surprising
Will ye come, lassie, come

For my self-esteem is low
And it's surely getting lower
And I sit and think and sulk
Will my waiting e'er be over?
Will ye come, lassie, come

For with angst my soul is ridden
It is hard to have no loving
The imagination flies
And my thoughts are ever roving
Will ye come, lassie, come

Then the springtime came again
And this year there's someone with me
The sad youth I was last year
Has been condemned to history
Will ye come, lassie, come

Chorus

And we'll both go together
For I now know what and why
I don't care about the weather
Will ye come, lassie, come

yes, that is the tune (from sound of music), of course, and the title is "I can dream, can't I" tho' actually inspired by one of my sisters who was crazy for a classmate of mine, when HE was in eighth grade, and SHE was a senior....

hmmmm, something from a sister's point of view? that could be her complaining about the immature spotty little dweebs, or maybe.....then maybe....or perhaps....

I had five sisters, got a lot of material to draw from here.....

From: Spider Tom

Aine,
Here's a little song about Love and Lust
It could fit the bill, I trust,

A CALMER SUITER (C) Ken Robertson (Spider Tom)

They read the Kama-Sutra,
An ancient book that says,
How to make your love life lovelier,
In a thousand different ways,
But the writing thing is easier,
Than the doings from the page.
Maybe they should have closed the book,
But, lust's a firery haze.

They were bumping, they were grinding,
They were studying their timing,
And the shrieks and squeals,
Echoed in the night,
Like a couple of explorers,
On the stormy sea oflust
They got where they were going,
but only just.

Like something in a dream,
They were balanced on a beam,
As they improvised new chapters,
From the book,
But gravity took over
And brought them back to earth,
Though they tried to fly, they crashed,
For all their worth. (CHORUS)

Went from something in a dream,
To something of a scream,
As they lost their mount,
And soon did gravitate.
T'was bent, what once was straighten,
More than ego was deflating,
You see many stems are snapped
So near a rose.
And their eyes, were glowing lusty,
As they tumbled through the air.
(CHORUS)

In the heap of limbs and linen, he was losing,
She was grinning,
Then the book had shut and
They had lost their places,
And the pain had quenched the fire,
And dampened their desire,
And wiped the lusty glow,
From off their faces. (CHORUS)

Now they've burned the Kama-Sutra,
He's become, a calmer suitor,
Found the simple things in life,
Are sometimes best,
But they still think of the time,
they came close to flying,
Like a little bird,
Who fell out of the nest. (CHORUS)

(C) Ken Robertson (a.k.a. Spider Tom)

N.B. Sometimes a mans imagination
is more fertile than his experience. K.R.

First Crush

To the tune of - Always Look on the Bright Side of Life - E. Idle

The first girl in this mantra
Was a pretty child called Sandra
I was nine and she was nearly ten
I told my Mum we'd marry
She laughed and said don't tarry
Do it before she gets to know men

Your first crush will never be your first wife
On this fact I'll happily bet my life

Inexperience is bliss
Until life takes the piss
Innocence is great 'til first heartbreak
When you're courting your first girl
Go ahead give it a whirl
But don't be shocked when you're left in the wake

Your first crush will never be your first wife
On this fact I'll happily bet my life

The next girl on my list
Was a contortionist
A pretty Asiatic dream co true
But she was from a catholic country
With a shotgun toting family
So French kiss was 'bout all we got to do

Your first crush will never be your first wife
On this fact I'll happily bet my life

Well then came Caroline
A girl who was finally mine
An English rose who knew just what to do
A seventeen year boy
Was pleased to be her toy
But then she left and my life went askew

Your first crush will never be your first wife
On this fact I'll happily bet my life

(Key change)

Your first crush will never be your first wife
On this fact I'll happily bet my life

When you find a wife
Then you'll think you've found a life
But that's day one it all starts in from there
When the littluns are a screaming
And she's talking about leaving
You'll think back to the past and wish you're there

Your first crush will never be your first wife
On this fact I'll happily bet my life

(Play our and whistle)

Amos - You shouldn't have mentioned American Pie - at least, not on this thread. They don't come much more derivative than this!

Why does love have to die?

A long long time ago
I can still remember
How the music used to make me sad
And I knew if I had my chanve
I'd ask some girl for a dance
And she'd say no, and I would feel so bad
But springtime always made me shiver
So full of nerves, my lips would quiver
I wouldn't cross the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried
I know for weeks on end I sighed
For I was all screwed up inside
I felt that love had died
So . . .

Chorus
Bye, bye, why does love have to die?
It takes all my songs, and I'm left with a sigh
An ache in my heart, and a tear in my eye
O why does love have to die?
Why does love have to die?

I once read a book of love
Seemed like a revelation from above
But in real life it wasn't so.
I was never into rock and roll
It never really touched my soul
And I wanted someone to dance with me real slow
I thought I was in love with her
Longed to chat her up in my father's car
Talk was all we'd ever do
And I'd end up feeling blue
I was a lonely teenage pimply youth
Who thought he knew how to seek the truth
But nothing could my poor heart soothe
The day my first love died
I started singing . . .

Chorus

Now for ten weeks I've been on my own
Growing fat and losing tone
But that's not how it ought to be
Writing doleful songs for a love that's gone
Songs that ramble on and on and on
And wishing from that love to be set free
And with my parents looking on
Waiting for new love to dawn
But still I just felt spurned
Had a love that wasn't returned
Now my life's a fire without a spark
I wander lonely in the park
And sing sad dirges in the dark
Because my first love died
And I keep singing . . .

Chorus

Helter Skelter in a summer swealter
Try to find my heart some shelter
Trying to find something that will last
Looking for some peace of mind
And try to put the past behind
And knowing that in love I'm outclassed
Then a sudden waft of old perfume
Reminds me of my old love's tune
With her I'd like to dance
But I'll never get the chance
And so I tie myself in knots
Remembering all those whys and whats
And feel completely out of sorts
Because my first love died
I started singing . . .

Chorus

So here I am, still in this place
Might as well be lost in space
Perhaps someday I'll learn to start again
Learn to leave the old and love the new
It's just a phase I'm going through
And I'll start just looking for a brand new friend
And as I'm working through this stage
I think of my old love with rage
I did not know how well
She'd held me in her spell
And as the flames climbed high into the night
Next time I want it to be right
In love again I'll find delight
Although my old love died
Bemusedly singing

Chorus

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
And she smiled sweetly and said 'hello'
I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd bought the music years before
And she came with me, and said 'where shall we go?'
And in the streets all faces beamed
This was the best I'd ever dreamed
With joy my heart was ringing
I could hear angels singing
A new love now to replace the lost
A love worth the old bitter cost
Someone I now love the most
Because my old love died
And now we're singing . . .

My, My, we won't let this new love die
It fills us with singing and it makes us feel high
It puts wings on our hearts, and it means we can fly
We'll never let our new love die
We'll never let our new love die.

NOW HE'S GONE, AND LOST HIS HEAD

We grew up 'round the farm yard,
Started out as friends,
Him just half a rooster,
Me a chick, back then,
We'd run out in the sun,
And scratch around the hay,
In time he started chaseing me,
I didn't run away.

He grew, to quite a rooster,
I was his favoured hen, I was there, the first time,
He raised his comb.
I loved to sit and watch him crow,
We walked together, end to end, And he'd grab me by the feathers,
Now and then.

One sorry day, he lost his head,
As cocks, so often do,
Gone off,left the coop,
And he's flown.
He's gone, and joined a touring show,
Like some circus freak,
And how I pine for him,
He'll never know.

They might love you, then they leave you,
They may lay thee, then betraye thee,
They might use you, with no affection shown,
In the whirlpool, that's called Love,
When push comes to a shove,
It is better to have lost,
Than, never known.

Aine,
In a world of love and loss,
I have written a lyric, from a sad and rejected hen
Who once knew the Fruita Roosta', before he lost his head.
Is this an ode to rejection?
Or an undying love.

Well pick me up ,
And sit me down,
I'm floating like,
A happy clown,
A smile has filled,
My hollow cheeks,
To you, I'll make,
My fingers spear,

Excitement fills my heart,
Oh Lord!
I've won the double chip award
It makes me feel so good, I run,
I'm gushing like,
The Flying Nun.

I know for sure
These chips are real
I've seen them laying,
In the field.
I held my nose though,
I confess,
To see the sweet smell,
Of success.

And it smelt a funny colour,
You listen.

Thanks Aine, Song Challenge,is an inspiration.

Here's the first of my attempts to "catch up" by writing songs for Challenge!s that were issued before I became a Mudcatter (my goal is to write at least one song for every Challenge!... Y'know what they say: Hold fast to dreams...)

ÁINE'S FEATHER BED
(Tune: "Grandma's Feather Bed" by Jim Connor, recorded by John Denver)
Note: The numbers of past Challenge!s are indicated in parentheses, but these numbers are not to be sung.

When I was a little pretty girl
Just past puberty
We used to go down to Áine's house,
My young boyfriend and me.
She'd have chicken ghosts (8) and flying pigs (44)
And some guy squeezin' all the bread (40)
But the best darn thing about Áine's house
Was her CHALLENGE! feather bed.

It was Ireland-high and Texas-wide,
Soft as a dull man's di*k (16)
It was made from the feathers in all the CHALLENGE!s
With a mynah (56), a stork (5b) and a chick (42a).
Anything that flew was in there, too,
Like the drunkards who searched for the head (48).
It didn't make one peep, but we heard a lot of tunes
From Áine's feather bed!

Ate our fav'rite foods (9), then we'd make a fire
By burpin' Japanese brew (28).
Áine'd talk about the hole in her yard (52);
The mermaid sang a shanty or two (32).
My boy would pant and he'd watch her chest
Till my anger made him dread;
Next thing he'd know, he'd wake with a concussion
In the middle of the strange feather bed.

It was Ireland-high and Texas-wide,
Smooth as a barber's trick (17)
It was made from the feathers in all the CHALLENGE!s
With a duck (42a), headless rooster (22) and chick (59).
Anything that flew was in there, too,
Like the cow that sank ships, so they said (49).
We didn't make one peep, but we played our little tunes
On Áine's feather bed!

Well, I loved my boyfriend, he loved me,
He loved Caitrin's hash cookies, too (2).
He would sniff Sildenafil (60) and grope at tits with blind men (41).
He even spat Nick's chew! (55) – ew!!!
And so, one day, I had to make a choice
And to my boyfriend, I said
That I'd trade him in to the whole CHALLENGE! crowd
For Áine's feather bed.
I'd trade him in to the whole CHALLENGE! crowd
['cept for the ones inside the bed – I need them as stuffing]
For Áine's feather bed.

Yes, it's Ireland-high and Texas-wide,
Cream-bloated Twinkie-thick (19)
It was made from the feathers in all the CHALLENGE!s
With a songbird (20) and Carnival chick (11).
Anything that flew was in there, too,
Like the fox's blown-up carcass-shred (35).
It doesn't make one peep, but I sing a lot of tunes
'Bout Áine's feather bed!
It doesn't make one peep, but I sing a lot of tuuuuunes
'Bout Áine's feather beeeeeeeeed!

Indeed it would! I'm trying to do my part by singing one of my Challenge! songs each time I'm on Mudcat Radio (only twice so far, but I'm thinking about dropping by next week). But it would be so much more fun to sing 'em in a room with a bunch of other Challenge!rs!

Thanks, Amos. I think I should add a pronunciation guide, for those who don't know (I didn't, till I went on Mudcat Radio and she called in): Áine's name is pronounced "AHN-ya".

In 1965, nursing a crush on a girl in biology class, this came out (to the tune of Malvina Reynolds' "Mrs. Clara Sullivan's Letter"). Whatever other verses I wrote are gratefully forgotten.
I dropped a coin in the wishin' well
And wished for a girl like Susie Bell
She's got red hair and dimpled cheeks
No prettier could you find if you searched for weeks
But she don't like me.

THE GAMES KIDS PLAY
Tune: Those Were The Days
New words by Al Boyce 8/14/01

Once upon a time there was a playground
Where I used to pull your pony tail
And you used to call me "Dork" and "Booger"
And I'd put bugs and worms in your lunch pail

CHORUS:
"You've got girl germs!", I said
"Boy Cooties never end!"
You hollered back, and turned your nose away.
"You throw just like a girl,"
I said and pulled your curls.
The games we played, oh yes the games kids play.

Na-na-na na-na na, na-na-na na-na na
The games we played, oh yes the games kids play.

Then you started growing out in strange ways
I'd smuggle smut with friends out to our fort
If I passed you in the hall, I'd blush, embarassed
And you read Glamour mags of every sort...

Then in school one day, the gym instructor
Said we were to mix the girls and boys
For dancing class required a dancing partner
And though annoyed, we were each others choice...

Now the years have flown, and we go strolling
Past the schoolyard where we used to play
And over by the swings, a girl was calling
"You Dork, untie my pigtails right away!"

Just a song

What Can I say René
It was so long ago
I never mentioned My Crush on you
So now you will never know

Of all of my Obsessions
Yours was the first
Of all of the pains I have suffered for love
Yours was the worst

I wish I had learned my lesson
then But I'm still learning
today I still find it hard to say the words
I still find them hard to say

Love is not for the weak of heart
Love's a mystery
Love is not an open book
Love is not for me

To the tune of the Limerick Rake

THE DERRYMACASH RAKE
When I was a boy I played in the bogs
Fishing for eels and capturing frogs
Or fogging in orchards, avoiding the dogs
That guarded the farmers' provisions
And jumping the ditches and kicking the ball
Swing over the river and shin down the wall
But when I turned thirteen, nothing mattered at all
'Cept courtin' and neckin' and kissin'
Weekly we'd gather down at Trasna hop
Where the girls came to boogie and shimmy and bop
And I need hardly tell you, my eyeballs near popped
At the sight of some those honeys
But being a lad, I did as lads do
I clung to the walls and I tried acting cool
Blowing out smoke rings, I looked like a fool
I smile now, but back then it weren't funny

The first time I copped, it was far from romantic
With lust and desire I was feeling quite frantic
I was told from the start there'd be no dirty antics
And so I could take 'er or leave 'er
We kissed and caressed behind Trasna Church
At the end of the night I was left in the lurch
She'd given it thought, her heart she had searched
But she had no call for my favour
From that day to this I've had my head turned
I've had my heart broke and my fingers been burned
I've been taken on board and then I've been spurned
But I doubt if I'm any exception
Since every man's thoughts when he reaches thirteen
Are dictated by lust and the need to be seen
With his arm round the waist of some pretty colleen
Who values his warmth and affection

Ah the Lion's club teen dances. All the boys leaning against the wall. All the girls parading by.... until the end of the evening when they play "Stairway to Heaven" Stairway to Heaven

Trowser Zeppelin

There's a story I hold that just begs to be told
About dancing to stairway to heaven
As I tell it I'm sure that the plot will unfold
With these words I do hope you won't be bored
Oh_oh__Oh oh ooh__
We were dancing to Stairway to heaven

There's a sign on the wall "Don't spit gum on the floor"
Cause you know we have trouble with cleaning
In a nook by the door a canteen that sells things
Most time none of the fellows are dancing

Oh___ it makes me wonder Oh___ it really makes me wonder.
There's a feeling I get when I look at her breast
and my hormones are heaving and raging
By the bus I have seen some kids that smoke as they please
and hear voices of boys who stand looking

Oh___ it makes me wonder
Oh___ it really makes me wonder

A request, and it's soon, for another fast tune
then the drummer will keep a loud rythm
And new guy will dance and he does it all wrong
While the rest all will taunt him with laughter

If theres a boner in your Levis dont be alarmed now
You are just horny for the prom queen
Yes there are two paths you can go by when you walk home
There's still time to ask her along

Your head is pounding and she wont go, that's if you dont know
That she is calling you to join her
Dear lady can you dance here so slow and did you know
your hairdo moves on the whispering wind

And as we walk on down the road
We find a grassy place to go
There walks her father we should know
Who shines flash light and wants to know
What we are doing in the cold
And if you wait until the spring
Your curfew will be up at last at last
We were alone and had a ball
We dance to rock so we can roll (in the hay)

We were dancing to Stairway to Heaven
