I like a bit of genteel aggro sometimes. A thread about the songs they sing at football matches might do the trick.

I mean what they sing at what the Americans call "soccer" matches - but if they sing at other types of football matches that might be fun too. Mind, I'm sure there'd be thread creep into Rugby Songs...

First songs and last songs - What songs are the best for starting a sing/play around off on a good foot? What songs are the last ones you ever want to hear in these situations?

I'll keep that in mind - Goofy and/or good advice you've received over the years. I'm thinking about player-to-player, but I suppose real life advice would work, too.

A thread about iconographic representations of historical instruments, and where on the web and in what various books one can find them, might be nice.

Sewers now - there's a great song by Sydney Carter about them, called "Down Below", and tere was a thread sabiout it a few months back I seem to remember. It doesn't seem to be in the DT.<>

But I think the song that might better relate to the last visitor to the thread is this one.

Kevin and all: I know back in the late eighties a group called Celtic Thunder was using Ullaimhn pipes (The Irish version of the bagpipe) To my knowledge they have two albums out the self titled Celtic Tunder and The Light of Other Days. As to going native, I Know Syracuse, NY has a pipeband (Home sweet home)I don't believe that's what you mean though. How about a thread dedicated to songs that crossed from folk into what the non-folk oriented people call "Mainstream" music? (Such as Stagger Lee in the 1950s)Neil

As for the bagpipes, two takers, I think I'll start up a thread on the lines indicated. (I know there are pipers in America, and communities where piping has continued - what I'm curious about is the extent to which it has ever broadened out at all and gone native, the way instruments like the fiddle and the guitar and squeezebox did; and I'm thinking about Latin America here as well.)

Always glad to contribute Guest James is absolutely right the pipes did make it to Nova Scotia. And In fact my father played the pipes. He was born in Ontario and emigrated to the US as a wee bairn. I like the idea of CD reviews How many times have we all bough a record/tape cd only to find that it sucked like a hoover? Having never heard of reginald perrin(sp?) i can't comment but the term "let's run it up the flagpole and see who salutes" has been for me a parody phrase of the fifties. By the way do we all know the lyrics to Gilligans Island? I don't want them I'm just asking. Neil

Two things......the bagpipes sure made it Nova Scotia...I'd love to see a thread for cd reviews...this is a place where people have very eclectic tastes. I think we could all benefit from a review section. It wouldn't have to be new things, maybe some reviews of our favourites..I can"t tell you how disappointed I am when I spend 25.00 dollars and the cd is dreadful.

Another idea that I have seen for some threads in the past, is one for saying nice things about people while they may still have the opportunity to read it. This rather than waiting until they are dead to say nice things, when it is also too late for anyone to see them perform.

They could have thread titles like: APPRECIATION. Griound Rukle? Again so they will be grouped together in the archives and make it easy to see who has been missed.

It does not have to be limited a performer. Could be a group, collector, writer, song, record company, venue, organisation or whatever? Anything you world like to say nice things about and give the opportunity for others to appreciate too.

Of course, given that, like all threads, it will be a starting point for discussion, there may also be dissenting voices and we may have some interesting debates? And TYPOS???

I would like to see a discussion, preferably kicked off by our good friend and laughing stock Shambles, on the relative similarities between Wagner's 'Also Sprach Zarathrustra' and Nietchze's 'Man and Superman'.
They say the first three notes tell it all!

Further to some of the ideas in the 'Musical Suicide' thread, we could, as a 'tavern' type thread, do a Mudcat version of Gilbert and Sullivan's 'The Mikado', where Shambles plays the man himself, and katlaughing, Praise and ???? play the 3 little maids from school.

Then, of course, we could send him off to prepare a dissertation on 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin and it's relevance to present day Mudcatting'

Praise, giving us a blow by blow account of Louisa M Alcott's 'Little Women'

No doubt other topics will come to mind as the thread develops.

How about happy discoveries? Taffy Thomas came to the USA, to perform in the National Storytelling Festival. Other than the festival flier, I'd never heard of him. I loved his one-hour solo spot, bought all his tapes, and even loaned one to a couple of close friends because I thought they should hear it, and I couldn't figure how to buy a copy for them on this continent. Those of you in England might well know his work, but if you don't, you might well enjoy it. Those of us in the rest of the world, if we hear about somebody on the 'Cat, we'll probably be more inclined to give their act a whirl. Same for tapes, books, etc.

McGrath, my dad and his dad used to converse all day, while working round the ranch, using only quotations from the works of the classics....Kipling (a lot!!), Scott (esp. Quinten Durward), Robt. W. Service, etc. Dad will be 83 in just a few weeks and can still call to mind darn near everyone of them.

There are other struggles going on around the world as well as that in Ireland.

Why didn't penny whistles and bagpipes make it across the Atlantic to become part of the native tradition?

Ah, the times I paddled on that beach when I were but a slip of a lass...... Burton Bradstock, just up the coast from Abbotsbury, at the very beginning of the chesil beach pebbles. Just around that headland, they start, and the other way is all sandstone cliffs and Goldentop..... sob, sob, wah, wah, homesick again!!!!

And for the Reggie Perrin fan = I fell about in hysterics at work when I discovered that there really IS a company called Sunshine Desserts. Shambles - One thing about concert reviews that I've always wanted to see was a mention of the type of instrumention used. From some reviews you can't tell if the performer was a solo act or backed by a ten piece band. { I tend to like minimal instrumentation }. I would also like to see the Mudcaters review new releases using the same criteria. If someone picked up a great new CD last night I'd probabally like to hear about it. Then I'd be able to hear several people exchange ideas as opposed to one reviewer in the paper whose taste can be dubious when it comes to the types of music we tend to enjoy here.

An excellent idea, and I hope it gets taken up.

Only one word of warning - this is a pretty widely dispersed Cafe. And the TV we watch is increasingly fragmented, so it's highly unlikely we've been watching the same TV. Especially if we spend more time on the Internet anyway. So the thinking needs to be - here's something good I saw which I thought was pretty good, watch out for it. (Writing reviews stuff that you don't like is a waste of time - they do it in the papers all the time, because it's much easier to be fun doing it.)

Okay Shambles, I am going to start a thread reviewing the video I just watched last night. It may not be a recent concert, but I bet there will be a few Mudcatters who would want to comment on Pete Seeger's Rainbow Quest with Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee.
Best harmonica playing I have ever heard!

It may not be exactly on the same lines as what you were thinking about as a 'brainstorm' but I think this music session with Sonny & Brownie is worth a discussion.

The way to ensure that the Mudcat continues to be the best thing on the Net, is for us all to make positive contributions to it. It would help if posters knew what some folk WANTED to see rather than all the negative and tedious "I don't want to see' stuff, about what they do not. For all this is unnecessary, if you don't like the subject of a thread, just ignore it and let it die. Even the best or the most popular ones will go in time.

That is only negative stuff I intend to bring in this thread. It would be nice to see lots of positive ideas, and suggestions for NEW thread subjects here and to leave the debate about the idea's suitability and whether it will work, to take place in the thread on that subject. When or even if, someone did think it was a good idea to start one. The purpose of this thread is only to 'spark off' ideas.

The buzzword for this process used to be called 'brainstorming', but that, probably just shows my vintage (IRN BRU 1969)…….. Right! "Let's run this one up the flagpole and see who salutes it" (sorry, that was a quote from on old 'Reggie Perrin show') "Great"… "Super"…."I didn't get where I am today without…."etc.

After the next visit to a live performance and the sooner the better, post a review of it here in a thread. The title could take the form of something like : REVIEW. 'Arthur Itis'. Sydney. 17th April 2000?

Using this format would enable all past threads of this type to be found and easily referred to, from the archives. This would not necessarily have to be in the style of a professional review but just your thoughts. What your expectations were and whether they were met, exceeded or disappointed. Highpoints and low-points of the night, some of the songs performed. That sort of thing.

I for one would find it more interesting, in these days of 'hype', to read a 'word of mouth' account of a concert, from one who paid to see it, than to read a professional one. It would serve many a useful purpose. In the case of a tour, it would give the opportunity for others to see (or not), a later performance, the very same concert may also have been seen by someone else, here? To compare those views, would be valuable too. The world-wide nature of The Mudcat, would also make these contributions valuable.

If this were kept topical and not limited to 'big names', it would also provide opportunities for local and or lesser- known folk to possibly become be better known (or not). Also give or prompt an opportunity for us to see some the 'older' performers, while they are still here.

Using the review as the starting point and basis for a discussion, for in true Mudcat fashion, who knows where discussion on that thread, may eventually lead? I would 'start the ball rolling' on this idea, but it has been a little while since the last concert I saw and the details have faded a little, but I will write about the next one. I may even take a note book?

Your turn to make a suggestion, or better still, you could go ahead and 'just do it', setting the example by starting your thread anyway…………………………. ?
