Subject: Requesting Lyrics
From: GUEST,mary_jomarchetti@hotmail.com
Date: 18 Apr 00 - 11:03 PM

Hello in there. Perhaps I'm in the wrong place. Left field? I've been all over the WWW, searching for the lyrics to an old song by Jesse Colin Young & the Youngbloods. The title is Sunlight. This tune appears on the album, Best Of The Youngbloods. That much I know. The words to the song, I don't.

PLEASE help if you can.

Many thanks in advance for your assistance or your ability/willingness to send me in the right direction.

m

Mary, welcome to Mudcat..... sorry I can't help you, but you will get more responses if you put the title of the song in the thread title...... not everyone goes into these generic "Lyr request" type ones..... and it makes it much easier for you to find again....

Mary - start with putting a phrase from the song in the blue search box above, with the phrase in [square brackets]. If that doesn't come up with what you are looking for, post a thread "LYR REQ: Sunlight" or some such and come back once a day to see if there has been a response. Happy lyric hunting.

Dear Mary,

Here you go, along with the guitar chords:

Sunlight
The Youngbloods (Jesse Colin Young)

on Youngbloods album "Elephant Mountain" (1969)
and Youngbloods (live) "Ride the Wind" (1971)
JCY album "On the Road" (1976) and various compilations

(see chord info at bottom of file)

Dm C
Have you seen the sunlight pourin' through her hair

Dm C
Felt her warm mouth on you in the summer's air

Am
e--------0--
B--------1--
G--------2--
D--------2--
A--3--2--0--
E----------- G
Runnin' in a field of brown

F
e--------1--
B--------1--
G--------2--
D--------3--
A--------3--
E--3--2--1-- Fm
She laughing rolling on the ground

C C# Dm
Smilin' as she pulls you down

F C
That's the way she feels about you

If your dreams can wake you screaming in the night
She can touch your face and take away your fright
Like a tree in the meadow wind
She will bend to take you in
Makes no difference where you been
That's the way she feels about you

(I don't have chords for this part! - mail me if ya can help)
if you wake up screaming
scared from what you're dreaming
you know she is there
she can share
you know that she cares about you

In the morning wake up laughing with the day
She will smile and ask you with her eyes to stay
Like the sunshine will warm the sand
She will touch you with her hand
And the touching makes you understand
That's the way she feels about you

Play the Dm chord with this pattern in first two lines of verse:

e--1---1---0---1---3---1---0---1-----------------
B--3---3---3---3---3---3---3---3-----------------
G--2---2---2---2---2---2---2---2-----------------
D--0---0---0---0---0---0---0---0-----------------
A--0---0---0---0---0---0---0---0-----------------
E------------------------------------------------

Play the C chord with this pattern in first two lines of verse:
e--0---0---0---0---0---0---0---0-----------------
B--1---1---0---1---3---1---0---1-----------------
G--0---0---0---0---0---0---0---0-----------------
D--2---2---2---2---2---2---2---2-----------------
A--3---3---3---3---3---3---3---3-----------------
E------------------------------------------------

For C#, I just slide the C chord up one fret [x 4 3 0 2 0]

For the F chord in last line ("That's the way she feels..."), see if you prefer substituting Dm7 [x 0 0 2 1 1]

The way this person made phrased her request MOST represents how people can ask us for stuff and show us they are actually a born Mudcatter, IMHO-- let's put it in the FAQ as an example of one way to get our best!!! And contrast it with one that gets our less-best!

From: BlueJay

Mary- Here's how I learned it. Aine, for my voice I prefer starting on E minor, and there are a few minor differences in how I figured it out. In the first phrases of the verses, I alternate between Maj 7 and Maj and Maj 7again. And If I used your key, in the lines that say "That's the way she feels about you" I would play F- G#- C. IMHI (In My Humble Interpretation)! I must put the chords in between the words, which I hate, but I don't know how to get them over the proper syllables. Sorry.

SUNLIGHT

Em- Have you seen the sunlight falling through her
Dmaj 7 hair, D- D- Dmaj7
Em- Felt her warm mouth on you in summer's
Dmaj7- air, D- D- Dmaj7
Bm- Running in a -A- field of brown,
G- Laughing, rolling -Gm- on the ground,
D- Smiling as she -E- pulls you down,
G- That's the way -A#- she feels a-D-bout you,
G- That's the way -A#- she feels a-D-bout you

If your dreams wake you screaming in the night,
She can touch your hand and take away your fright
Like a tree in the meadow wind,
She will bend to take you in,
Makes no difference where you've been,
That's the way she feels about you,
That's the way she feels about you.

D-D-Em-(let the chord ring) If you wake up screaming,
D-D-G- ( Ring it again) Scared by what you're dreaming
Bm- You know -A- she is -G- there,
She -Em- can share,
G- You'll know where she feels -A#- about -A- you.

In the morning, wake up rising with the day,
She will smileand ask you with her eyes to stay,
Like the sunshine warms the sand,
She will touch you with her hand,
Touching makes you understand,
That's the way she feels about you,
That's the way she feels about you,
That's the way she feels about you. -D on fret 14

As I said, this is only my try at this great song. Aine, I'm really not sure about the middle part that had you stumped. I don't think it's really complete, but I've made it work. I can't express how delighted I am to find a couple of YOUNGBLOODS fans out there. The have been undeservedly forgotten, except "Get Together". BUY ELEPHANT MOUNTAIN. BUY ELEPHANT MOUNTAIN!! It's one of my must-have-if-stranded-on-an-island albums. Thank you guest for this thread. It's taken me a long time to "Get Together" and finish this. You may have heard from Jesse himself. I would almost ;) trade my wife and kids for a CD of "SOUL OF A CITY BOY", currently out of print. Thanks BlueJay

Already a correction: On the first two lines of the verses, I actually play Emin7, playing E minor and adding the third fret on both the high E string and the B string. Any questions, or a better way to play the middle part, please contact me! BlueJay

Dear Bluejay,

Those aren't chords that I came up with, I just copied them from the SingleAct site. I like your chording better, actually. Thanks for sharing your version with us! Now I have another song to learn - Yeah!

I was always a big Youngbloods fan, and I bought Jesse's solo albums too -- he's one great singer/songwriter.

Whether our GUEST comes back to get her lyrics or not, I'm sure glad she dropped in and asked about this song.

I'm sorry to all of you who used up time and energy to also provide chords. I'm not a musician. But it is a wonderful piece of muisic.

Aine, I e-mailed you elsewhere with another rendition of the above note.

This Thread has generated some warmth; I like it here.

mjm- Are you the Guest who started this thread? If so, congratulations on becoming a Mudcatter! If I'd read carefully, I'd have noticed that you only requested the LYRICS. But certainly, no apologies are needed. It was a labor of love. Just think, as a guest, you have started a fine thread. And Aine seems to like the chords I provided. Also, I keep hoping someone will have a better version of the middle part of the song than I do, and that I will learn something in turn. It may happen, it may not. Either way is OK. Welcome to the Mudcat. Anyone who loves a Youngbloods song is alright by me! Peace, BlueJay.
