Max, my guess would be that you'll look like Bill Gates, be as financially endowed as Robert Johnson, and dress like Queen Elizabeth.

Just a guess.....I may be wrong.

Funny, my horoscope told me that I have a shot at King of the World today. Strangest horoscope I ever heard of. I quote: "What would you do if you were king or queen of the world? Make plans; you may get a great chance later."

What the hell is up with that?

Thanks for the link - I bookmarked it, and guess what, it doesn't bother having it's own icon

Not sure what that says...

Boy, you guys are smart. Cute isn't it. Wincing Devil got it figured first, and SDShad got the rest to ya. Wanna hear the story of the ICON? OK...

When we were relaunching the site back when with a lot of the new features, for days afterward I was carefully watching the log files to discover any errors or oversights etc. I kept seeing this file not found for favicon.ico. I was confused and did a little research. What I found was what Wincing Devil posted above. When folks add a bookmark in Internet Explorer, the browser looks to see if the site has an icon associated with it. I simply made sure it did. Neato huh? I'm a friggin Genius huh?

Apparently it only works with newer version of IE, maybe 4 or better, or maybe 5.

Or, if like me, you're sitting here wondering "what the heck are they talking about," since for some reason you have both IE and Netscape and neither of them uses a Mudcat Banjo icon when you create a shortcut with them (okay, so I'm also running NT 4.0 Workstation, which might have something to do with it too), you could point your browser at:

http://www.mudcat.org/favicon.ico, and save the icon file to your hard drive, and then you can use it as the icon for anything.

MMario - I tend to agree with you. I work as a computer programmer and detest all the bells and whistles. I'd much prefer text only (I'd rather go back to DOS than deal with Windows). I also keep the security on my browser set at the highest level, and delete stuff manually on a daily basis. The ONLY reason I allow cookies on my machine is so I can come into the Mudcat. I don't want anything changed on my machine unless I specifically do it, and try to block any change that anyone else tries to make. The best way to put me in a grumpy mood is to start screwing with my machine.

okay - I agree.I stated my case badly. what I object to is that this custom icon bit is out of the control of the user. A webmaster can put whatever they want into the icon. MINIMUM, you should have the option of turning the feature off.

okay - I'm a "minimalist". Frames, backgrounds, etc drive me nuts. And while I respect the right of www.comtemplator.com to put background music on every page I am VERY happy with the change that allows me to turn it off. which I do immediatly on entering.

and I'm grumpy today....which is coming out in my posts. my apologies (spelling? that just doesn't look right) to all.

Any time you surfing on the net you are constantly downloading. Every bit of text, every line, every button, every picture that shows up in your browser is downloaded. By going to a page you are reqesting that files be downloaded to your computer.

Mmario,

Bookmarking does require a download. At the very least you are downloading the name of the page and it's url.

I have no problem with it, as by it's nature, web surfing almost always involves downloading.

I remember reading an article in an internet magazine, a few months ago, on how to do the bookmark icon. I can't find the article, and would be grateful if anyone could point me in the direction of any on-line resources that might tell me.

Thanks

Ed

bookmarking does NOT require a download. Nor do I like the idea that a webmaster can control what my shortcuts look like. Kids create shortcuts too.....

The Real Answer is:

Warning: Slight TechnoBabble Here

This is only visible to Internet Explorer users who bookmark a site. Also, the WebMaster must have put together an Icon file called "favicon.ico" that IE will request when the user bookmarks a site. This does two things:
  • It gives the user a distinctive icon to mark the site
  • It lets the WebMaster know when their site has been bookmarked by a user.
It's a convenience to the User, and a warm fuzzy for the WebMaster.

You got me curious....'spaw, could you (would you?) right-click on the icon;
chose properties;

on that there should be a "change icon" button.
when you press that it should bring up a box with two fields.... "File name" and "current icon"

What does it say in the "file name" box?

First, its a given that I'm a complete computer idiot. I sit here with this fastass, big memory, Gateway and I don't know a tenth of what it does. But in the past couple of years, I've gotten pretty good at searching the Net and setting up this thing to do what I want. I have arranged the desktop to my needs and have shortcuts to various things I use. For a long time, one of those shortcuts has been the 'Cat of course, but the thing simply said "threads" and some generic little gizwhickie as an icon. THEN........Seemingly out of the blue, I notice that I now have a little "Banjo/Catfish Mudcat Logo" ICON!!!!

Its real cute and all that, but where the hell did it come from? With others, they have either come up at the time I loaded the program or I added it from somewhere later. I mean, there are times I think this damn computer has a life of its own and does things either to confuse me or simply piss me off. I am sometimes missing food or beverage from my fridge too and I have a feeling its raiding the icebox when I go to sleep. Plus, I think its having an affair with my VCR, but I can't catch them "in the act."

But, my question is.......where did the icon come from? Is it a new feature of sorts or something Ms. Gateway finally decided to let me see?

Spaw
