Subject: Lyr Add: CALUM MOORE (from Vin Garbutt)
From: Dave U.K. dave.barnes@lis.co.uk

Hi. These are the lyrics, as best as I can remember, that I learned from a Vin Garbutt recording a very long time ago.

Oh, Calum Moore, are you home drunk again?
You've broken your promise for the millionth time.
Your family are living here on the bread line
While you fill your belly with whisky and wine.

I mind when we married a long time ago.
We'd oft times share pleasure and seldom rowed.
I respected you more than you'll ever know how,
But oh, Calum, oh, just look at you now.

Your beatings I've learned to treat with disdain.
My body has hardened. I'm numb with the pain,
But I'll never forgive you for hurting my bairn.
Just look how the whisky has altered your brain.

I know what you'll say as I walk out the door,
You'll swear and you'll promise that your drinking's o'er.
You'll say that you love me like oft times before,
But I know in me heart you'll be home drunk once more.

Regards. Dave

Dave, to solve your disappearing carriage returns, consult the teal thread at the very top of the threads - 'Mudcat FAQ - Newcomer's Guide'. Consult 'Basic HTML' under 'technical advice'. You need to put a line break command - the letters 'br' between angle brackets - after each line of the song posted. Joe explains it all in detail in the FAQ thread.

The song's on Vin's powerful album Little Innocents, with the name spelt as Calum Moore - here's what Vin wrote about it:

Written by Andy Mitchel of Ullapool in Scotland. This song is about the perennial problem of wife-beating. When the moral foundations of society are beginning to crumble, the ensuing frustration must lead to violence. Wife-beating, like baby-battering, is on the increase. So do we do something to alleviate the situation? Or do we make wife-beating and baby-battering legal?

There are a few variations from the text Dave gave - but pretty minor, apart from the last verse which Vin recorded as:

You'll wake in the morning remorseful and sore,
You'll promise again that your drinkin's o'er,
And I'll want to believe you as often before,
But I know in my heart you'll come home drunk once more.

Talking about Vin Garbutt, here is a bit from an email his wife Pat sends out to people who've asked to be on his mailing list for Vin's gigs - and I think it'd be of interest to a lot of Mudcatters:

Vin and I were sad to hear of the death of Isaac Guillory. He was a good friend to Vin. Isaac and his wife Vicky have given a lot of support to Vin over the years not least by turning up at concerts whenever they could and this must have been a bit of a busman's holiday for a busy musician. Isaac was a unique artist who's talents we will miss so much but also we have lost one of life's perfect gentlemen.

Isaac and Vicky have two small children and anyone wishing to pay their respects by donating towards their support can do so by contacting us at Home Roots Music. Vin will be only too happy to pass on any mail personally to Vicky Guillory.

And here is the link to Home Roots Music and so forth:

Calum Moore was written by Andy Mitchel of Ullapool, (Mudcat's own Strupag) and is a powerful ballad about drunkenness and wife beating.

The song was recorded by Vin Garbutt on his LP "Little Innocents", but no lyrics have been posted here, and no references turn up on Google.

Perhaps Spot the Dog who sings this, might look in to post?

check out Gillian Welch's website....she recorded this song and was quite successful with it and you probably can access the chords and lyrics. The proper title is Caleb Meyer and she wrote it. Of course , I could have the wrong song altogether. Is the chorus something like
Caleb Meyer your ghost is gonna wear those rattlin' chains
But when I go to sleep at night don't you call my name"

Do you want me to ring Spot and get him to post the lyrics for Andy Mitchels Calum Moore, tog?

Or is erinmaidin right and and you don't know your Calums from your Calebs?;-)

Or I could post them if you really mean Country Roads by John Denver...

Cheers

CALUM MORE
(Andy Mitchell)

Oh Calum Moore are you home drunk again.
You've broken your promise for the millionth time
Your family are living near on the breadline
While you fill your belly with whisky and wine.

Do you mind when we married a good time ago
We often shared laughter and seldom rowed
I respected you more than you'll ever know how
But Calum oh Calum just look at you now.

Your beatings I've learned to treat with disdain
My body has hardened and I'm numb to the pain
But I'll never forgive you for hurting my bairns
Oh Calum the drinking has altered your brain.

Then you wake in the morning remorseful and sore
And you promise again that your drinking is o'er
And I want to believe you as often before.
But oh Calum Moore are you home drunk once more.

Oh Calum Moore are you home drunk again.

With max respect to Andy Mitchel for writing this superb song and hope that this version is near to the original. I asked Andy if I could sing it and he said he was more than happy for me to, but it may be good etiquette to ask him before you do. He is on the MC as Strupag as Noreen says.

Hi Noreen. When will we two meet again? Don't even hear from you these days...

If memory serves me, the name of the song is Calum More, which is roughly the pronunciation of the gaelic Mhor, as in big.
The implication being there's nothing "Big" about this particular Calum!

"Little Innocents" is also on Spotify. And the spelling there is CALUM MORE. I'd like to verify the spelling, but neither the song nor the album is mentioned at Vin Garbutt's web site.

I listened to the song, and I think there are some significant differences compared to the lyrics posted above by Dave Barnes, especially in the 4th verse, but they are difficult to understand.

Anybody else want to make some corrections?

Not 100% sure of this, but I would have thought that Andy Mitchell's title was "Calum MOR", "mor" being the Scots Gaelic for "big".

I used to sing this Andy Mitchell song a long time ago, learned it by ear - I think from a tape - - pronounced Calum Mhor /Mor(Gaelic?) I would need to listen to it again to recall the words - - but I think I was given it by Sheena Wellington? or- maybe it was on Sheena's (cd? cassette? - the one that had Last of the Great Whales on it)
Powerful song.

the name 'More' (not Gaelic) is common in Caithness, maybe
Sutherland- - and perhaps as far down as Ullapool?

Jim, you're right. The spelling is "Calum More" on Garbutt's album. I wonder about the author's name though - in the sleeve notes it's Andy Mitchel but on the record label it's Andy Mitchell.
