Radio for folkies?

Subject: Radio for folkies? From: Kelida Date: 20 Apr 00 - 11:09 PM In Cincinnati, we only have one really great station for folk music, and that's WAIF, 88.3. They play a lot of blues and folk and also reggae, jazz, and local music, occasionally some hardcore or industrial for variety, but usually when I listen to it they play folk or blues (a lot of it from local groups). I was wondering, are there any other great radio stations out there? Peace--Bridget |

I do know that at one point the oldies station in the Washington DC/Baltimore, MD area used to have a three hour Folk show every Sunday night but that was 13 years ago I believe it was 104.9 fm but don't quote me on that. It has been far too many years and beers ago. I will check out the sites but if anyone knows of a good folk music station in Central New York don't keep it a secret. Neil |

I've come to depend on WKSU on the net for my folk fixes. Rediscovered Kat Eggleston there, too, who moved from Seattle soon after I did and is now in Chicago, and is one of my favorite songwriters. Is Sandy Bradley's Pot Luck still on KBCS? Amergin, get in touch with the Portland Folklore Society (they have a website) and somebody should be able to point you to a good source. Or maybe Margo or Barbara can help. Last time I was in Oregon, it sounded like KBOO had turned into a hiphop station. They used to play a lot of folk. Oh, well, we do have at least two 24 hr Hawaiian music stations here (one traditional, one more contemporary), so I guess I can't complain too much (sly grin!) Aloha, Mark |

Among the offerings at his site is a comprehensive list of Folk Radio and Webcastings. Visit it and decide for yourself what you can work into your schedule. In addition it is a fine site for all those with an interest in the folk genre. I don't setup URL's as part of my post because I've never tried it but just search for About.com +Entertainment +Folk. I keep switching around the left hand side of the dial for stations from Murray,KY; Cape Girardeau,MO; and Carbondale, IL. When the weather is right, I listen to KDHX in St.Louis, especially Sunday morning for 'The Family Reunion' and Monday morning for 'Ireland in America'. I think KDHX has a web site.KAXE from Minnesota is another good site for web radio, though the details escape me now. John |

From: Dale Rose Date: 27 Apr 00 - 12:29 AM Somebody already mentioned KDHX, my favorite radio station, on or off the net, but I'd like to add KBON, Eunice, Louisiana for the best in Cajun, Zydeco, Swamp Pop, Blues, Classic Country, everything with a Louisiana Flavor! They are quite responsive as well. One night they played a recording that was interesting to me, but I had no idea who or what it was. A request to the "Email the DJ" link brought me the info on the song, who did it, and where to get it. (Dan et Lou from Canada, in case you are curious) A request for a song by Kira Viator if they had a chance brought not one, but two songs by the young lady, plus a station plug by her. Highly recommended ~~ windows media player. Playing Geno Delafose at this very moment. |

WBEZ, the public station figures at Thistle & Shamrock and Prairie Home Companion are all the folk that we need. They used to have several other shows, but dumped them when a new station manager came on. I stopped pledging at that point. Now, when they call, I tell them I will start pledging again when they present another locally produced folk show. WDCB in Glen Ellyn at 90.9 has several good folk shows. |

From: Dale Rose Date: 28 Apr 00 - 10:23 AM Oh, forgot another one of my top favorites, certainly one of the most unusual ~~ ELDORADIO, CESKE BUDEJOVICE, CZECH REPUBLIC. Eldorádio has both 28 and 56 Real Audio streams. Hard to describe what you'll hear there. Like they say, American and Czech country & western music, folk songs, and bluegrass. You might get a Gordon Lightfoot song ~~ done up Czech style, a Johnny Cash classic, who knows what will come next? I would say that their country music leans mostly toward the so called classic variety. Right now they are playing a song which sounds like a cross between bluegrass and a czech folk song, with a bit of comedy thrown in. Oh, here's a priceless one, I've Been Everywhere done up Czech-style!

There's also a very good blues show, Let The Good Times Roll that comes on just before Rick at 6:00 P.M. We also have a Folk show whose name escapes me on CJRT, 91.1 from noon until 2:00 every Saturday, and they also have a good blues show from 3:00 until 5:00 on Saturdays. |

I think the last time I heard him was around 1970, when I was a senior in high school, but I seem to recall hearing he's back at it. The station is KANU, 91.5 for those in the area. For the rest of you, listen in via the web - go to KANU.ukans.edu. Celtic is from 1 - 2:30, contemporary folk from 2:30 - 4:30, roughly, then it gets old-timey and bluegrass is from 6:00 - 7:00. Something for everyone! Pamela Bruner |
