Didn't see it in the DB and I really like it. Ed McCurdy recorded it way back in the 50's, but I don't have the album any more, I just remember the words.

The Woodpecker
Oh, once there was a woodpecker, and the woodpecker's head was red
He pecked upon an old fencepost, and the fencepost to him said:
"Oh, stop your pecking, woodpecker! At least, stop pecking me!
For the noise is keeping me awake. Go peck on the old oak tree!"
So the woodpecker said, "Why, yes, of course" and away from there he flew.
He flew right up to the old oak tree as the fencepost asked him to.
He perched himself on the old oak tree and pecked there for a while
Till the oak tree turned to the woodpecker and said with a pleasant smile:
"I really must beg your pardon, I hate to bother you.
I know it's rude to interrupt, forgive me if I do!
But all this pecking hurts my head, it makes my poor head ache,
So if you do not too much mind... STOP, for goodness' sake!"
So off flew the woodpecker, yes, off again he flew
And to himself he sadly said: "Oh, what am I to do!
A woodpecker has to peck on wood --that's how I got my name--
But the fencepost doesn't want me, and the oak tree just the same.
Oh, what a pity, oh, how sad! I'll soon become a wreck!
For what can a poor woodpecker do, when he has no wood to peck?
^^

Refresh with a question, what did I do wrong that made this not enterable into the Trad? I posted it before reading all the rules, but I thought I'd followed them... perhaps it's just waiting its turn? Merely wondering...

Mrzzy - it's been "harvested" - see the little 'possum ears next to the title and at the bottom of the lyrics? The DT is updated twice a year,( a new one is teetering on the brink of release last I heard) and the version on the MudCat is currently one behind. ( I understand there were technical problems with the Apr00 version of DT - but that's neither here nor there)

Dick Greenhaus selects and adds to the DT - trying to maintain a balance between lyrics with and without tunes, trad vs new, etc. He has also stated his general rule of thumb is "if someone considered it important enough to post"

Ummm - does Harvested mean Will Go In When We Update? I wondered about those little carets, I thought I'd put them there by mistake! And great rule of thumb, guys!

Thanks

As I understand it (and Dick will correct me I am sure if I am wrong) the harvested items will eventually make it into the DT - but it may take a while.

also - the Harvesting team only started adding the marks about two years ago - so on older posts if you don't see them it doesn't necessarily mean they weren't harvested. Thirdly - if there is a "Third wing" = ^^^ it means the lyrics are already either in the DT or previously posted.

So 20 years later... Still not in the database. Oh, tell me how long / have I got to wait?

Just curious. This was my first Lyr Add post.
