Subject: living in the mountains From: GUEST,Brigid in the mountains Date: 23 Apr 00 - 11:30 AM hi all, do any of you live in the mountains?? And I don't mean the rockies, or such faraway places!!! I mean the Swiss Alps. it is beautiful here, or was up to about an hour ago ,then it appears the horrible weather from the Atlantic has finally made its way to us. If you are near the Swiss mountains and happen to be Irish too .....great! |
Subject: RE: living in the mountains From: Alice Date: 23 Apr 00 - 05:17 PM Well, faraway they may be to you, but I am right here in the Rockies. alice flynn in montana |

Subject: RE: living in the mountains From: NancyZ Date: 23 Apr 00 - 09:01 PM I'm a mountain dweller too. I live at the Southern end of the Cascades, at the base of Mt Shasta. However, I have seen the Alps and they are VERY impressive! But then, so are the Rockies:) Have a nice Easter everyone. Nancy |
Subject: RE: living in the mountains From: rangeroger Date: 23 Apr 00 - 09:11 PM Whoops. I meant the western edge. I learned to ski in the Bavarian Alps. Does that count? rr |
Subject: RE: living in the mountains From: GUEST,Les B Date: 23 Apr 00 - 11:47 PM I wonder if they have "chinooks" in the Alps ?? |
Subject: RE: living in the mountains From: Lonesome EJ Date: 24 Apr 00 - 02:15 AM I climbed Jungfrau near Interlaken, Switzerland in 1972, and will never forget the view from the summit, Brigid. I am now living in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, where are spring Columbine blooms are nearly as beautiful as your eidelweiss. |
Subject: RE: living in the mountains From: Roo Date: 29 Apr 00 - 07:37 AM Does living in the Blue Mountains in New South Wales (Australia) count? |
Subject: RE: living in the mountains From: Rex Date: 01 May 00 - 12:29 PM We got six inches of new snow last night. The flowers will have to wait but they will come. Rex |
Subject: RE: living in the mountains From: Giac Date: 01 May 00 - 10:25 PM I can see the top of Old Smoky from my window and it was 80 degrees here in the valley today. The rhododendrons and mountain laurel will be in full bloom in a few more weeks. 'Tain't the Alps, and I'd love to see them, but I left the Ozarks for the Smokies and guess I'll stay put. Have you ever seen little bright orange salamanders? Or mudpuppies that are three feet long? And Mockingbirds ... they can imitate a red-tailed hawk so you think it's comin' in the window after you. Peacefulness, from my mountains to yours, giac

Subject: RE: living in the mountains From: GUEST,Brigid in the mountains Date: 02 May 00 - 10:01 AM if I knew what a chinook was I could tell you if we had them or not................ |
Subject: RE: living in the mountains From: Ulli Date: 02 May 00 - 05:00 PM Yes, I do live in the mountains, not the Swiss mountains but the Austrian Alps (they belong to the same range, don't they?) ... am I Irish? I am Austrian but there is a theory that our (my) forefathers might have emigrated from Ireland in the 17th century. That's roughly when our family name is first mentioned in local documents (the family name is 'Troy', which is a very uncommon name here and definitely not German; I know that there are Troys in Ireland and the US, but we have not been able yet to verify this theory. Wouldn't be surprised if a Mudcatter came up with a useful idea...by the way it's great living in the Alps...no Edelweiss to be seen yet ... mountains still covered with snow ulli

Subject: RE: living in the mountains From: Alice Date: 02 May 00 - 11:15 PM Brigid, a chinook is a warm wind that blows in and melts the snow. You pronounce the "ch" like an "sh". I'm sure you have your own word for that kind of wind in your mountains. The snow is long gone here, the warmest winter on record. Alice in Montana |
Subject: RE: living in the mountains From: Lonesome EJ Date: 03 May 00 - 12:37 AM Had a friend once who was skiing the face of a peak when a chinook came roaring down the slope behind him. He tried to stay ahead of it, but about two thirds of the way down it caught up with him, and instead of a nice packed-snow surface, he was rolling in gravel. Just goes to show the power of a chinook. :) The pasque flowers have made their appearances, little furry purple flowers that grow singly or in pairs. These hardy little blooms are the first harbinger of spring here at 8500 feet.
"..and it makes me feel fine |
Subject: RE: living in the mountains From: Rex Date: 03 May 00 - 06:06 PM Yup, but a little higher at 9600 just around EJ's corner they don't come. No flowers are blooming yet. But columbine are coming up. But it's truly Spring I heard the first hummingbird up here. The hummingbird feeder went up immediately. Rex |
