Ever notice that the opening notes to The International are the same as the opening notes to "They Try to Tell Us We're Too Young"?

It's from the same album, Iain MacKintosh's 'By Request' (1974 - no misprint). Sorry I can't post tunes, but if you'd like a tape send me a personal message. - Susanne

MRS CANATELLI
(Benny Gallagher / Graham Lyle)

No dogs, no cats and wipe your feet on the mat
No blacks, no blues, the rent is due
Three weeks in advance put it in her hands
If you want to stay at Mrs. Canatelli's

No girls, no men, the doors are locked right on ten
You can't conceive, she believes
Holy water feeds all your naughty needs
Giving liberty at Mrs. Canatelli's

She starts her day with every prayer she can say
Her tea and toast are sanctified
By the Holy Ghost, every lodger knows
Heaven is that close at Mrs. Canatelli's

Repeat 1

[1974:] Benny told me they wrote this song about the landlady of their lodgings when they were in London with [their band] 'McGuinness Flint'. (Notes Iain MacKintosh, 'By Request')

[1994:] 'Blacks' and 'blues' were Captagon and Nembutal, drugs commonly used by musicians in the '60s, particularly on the rock scene. We never took them, of course ... (Intro Hamish Imlach)

John, this is what you want, as sung by Iain MacKintosh:

INTERNATIONAL
(Benny Gallagher / Graham Lyle)

Chorus:
We'll make them see international
We'll make them be international
Like you and me

Hey Jesus, hey it's me
Now I've become international
And become very rational
As you decree

Hey Jesus, it's our day
Now I can bring them home to you
Though we may lose out on a few
Who care to stray

Hey Jesus, it's okay
Now we have common interests
So we can help along the rest
To be like we

Hey Jesus, you'll agree
They're going downhill very fast
And it don't look as though they'll last
Till Judgment Day

I must admit, however, I vastly prefer their 'Mrs Canatelli'! - Susanne

if you want the extra verses, there's a german site: try to get there with a search engine posting "arbeiterlieder" because I got the address but it's totally absurd and I can't make a BlueClickyThing.

OK, cancel extra verses for now. Will post in Digitrad when I get some time, they are a good story regardless of the stilted English.

Hmmm.....good stirring stuff but not really the song Im after. Thanks anyway.
Gallacher and Lyle were a duo from Scotland in the early seventies who produced a string of VERY decent folky-type records. Brits among us might remember When Im Dead and Gone which they wrote when they were part of McGuiness Flint and Wear Your Heart on Your Sleeve - their only big uk hit. Graham Lyle is still writing very high quality pop songs for the likes of Art Garfunkel (New York) and Tina Turner (Whats Love Got To Do With It, no less). Really worth checking out!

There are several more verses. I'll try to get them typed up and posted.

Who are Gallacher & Lyle?

I have always seen the English translation attributed to Charles H. Kerr, founder of Kerr Publishing (which still exists in Chicago).

THE INTERNATIONAL Arise, ye prisoners of starvation! Arise, ye wretched of the earth, For justice thunders condemnation, A better world's in birth, Never more tradition's chains shall bind us, Arise, ye slaves no more in thrall The earth shall rise on new foundations, We have been naught; we shall be all.

CHORUS:

'Tis the final conflict Let each stand in his place, The international working class Shall free the human race.

We want no condescending saviors, To rule us from a judgment hall; We workers ask not for their favors: Let us consult for all, To make the thief disgorge his booty, To free the spirit from its cell, We must ourselves decide our duty, We must decide and do it well. i don't know who wrote this- i got it from the socialist songbook ----

Saw somebody else looking for a G&L lyric. For me, this was the best they ever wrote, and they wrote a lot of excellent stuff. All help appreciated!!
