From: Bill Dunlap

I am looking for a recording or the lyrics of a parody on the Sinatra song "My way." It is probably called "Their way" or "I did it their way." I don't know the author or the performer. The song is from the POV of a college professor who made sure he succeeded by doing it "their way."

The author of the song is Bob Blue. He has recordings available, but I don't know the titles or publisher.

He is also the subject of a recent documentary movie, which I believe is about his struggle to continue teaching kids music, in spite of his worsening symptoms from Multiple Sclerosis.

I'll see what other information I can dig up.

Hi,

First heard this parody sung by Roy Bailey. He apparently performed it at Sheffield when he retired from academia there.

It's right here in the Digital Tradition. Always check before sending people elsewhere for songs we have here. I searched for [their way] which turned out to be the title.

Thanks to everyone for responding so quickly to this. I needed the words in a big hurry so I could respond, at a 6:00 class, to a group of students who seem to regard my approach as a bit doctrinaire and rigid. I got the lyrics in plenty of time and was able to put the point across most effectively. I am much grateful.

In response to Susan of DT: The problem seems to be that I don't know how to use the search engine. When I search for "Their Way" I get a reply that nothing in the data base matches my search request. So anyway, please accept my apologies along with my thanks.

Bill, there is a FAQ in the works. It's in a current thread but it ain't all done yet!

Can you tell us more about how you used the son? Sounds really neat!

Bill- if you take any word or words or phrase in the song and enter it in the blue box at the top of the page, you'll get a list of songs containing that word or words or phrase. A phrase must be surrounded by square brackets to indicate that it's a phrase and not two unconnected words:

ie [their way] or [I did it their way]

And what about the "@" stuff? Or the fact that when I click on any title I get "So sorry, nothing found"? What does "@"mean and if the titles can't be searched why give it as an option? The Title Search should be the easiest way to use the DT, and it is definitely not.

Here's a link to the DT version .
But I vaguely remember another parody which ends with
"and now, lets go next door and try it their way"

I had really hoped the parody was going to be from the point of view of a tremendously successful nightclub singer who had the solid support of a certain ethnically-based businessmen's association .....

There was another equally funny parody with the same title written and sung by the late Jack "the Bard" Sully. He apparently wrote it on his retirement before he returned to Cardiff after many years working in Surrey. I don't think he ever recorded it unfortunately.

Just to clarify, although Frank Sinatra did perform the song MY WAY, it is actually Paul Anka's song.

And I believe Anka bought the rights to the melody from a European song-writer.

It was written by Jack Sully known as "Jack the Bard" He did put it on a CD but sadly he died a few years ago aged 90

I assume Guest is talking about the parodic lyrics. Here's what Wiki says about My Way: "Its lyrics were written by Paul Anka and set to music based on the French song "Comme d'habitude" composed in 1967 by Claude François and Jacques Revaux."
