Apparently the tune for Lachlan Tigers is the same as Musselburgh Fair.

It'd be nice to be able to put the two sets of lyrics together.

Can anyone help???

A band called Jack the Lad did a song called something like Tinker Taylor Knickerbocker Lineman which was partly sung in Welsh.

It had the same tune as Lachlan Tigers.

Cocky's Joy from Bathurst Australia did a version of Lachlan Tigers that is damned good.

The Bushwackers do a version of Lachlan Tigers too. It is not a powerful as Cocky's Joy's version (and that is really saying something).

The Lachlan River begins in the hills behind Goulburn in NSW Australia. It then flows into Wyalgala Dam (where it joins with the Abercrombie River). It then flows through places like Cowra (and I think Forbes) and then into the Macquarie.

The amount of shearers along the length of that river would be huge. There are still a lot of Lachlan Tigers.

Oh, and by the way. . .

anyone know the chords and words to Musselburgh Fair?

I understand that Musselburgh Fair is a day of horse races (Trotting - Pacers - Harness Racing).

It is interesting to think of how a song about a race day in Edinburgh (I think) was adapted for a song about shearers in central west NSW Australia.

The same tune is used for 'The Station Cook' and 'The Great Northern Line' one of Sally Sloane's songs. The tune is from the Scottish song 'Musselburgh Fair'. From the singing of A.L.Lloyd.

-- See the other thread on Musselburgh Field -- I don't know of a Scots song "Musselburgh Fair", and I can't find it as a tune either. What's the source for that info?

I realise this post is 8 years late, but I was looking for the chords to a great Irish song by Dominic Behan called Arkle, which has the same tune as Musselburgh Fair, and the same as Lachlan Tigers, apparently. I found the chords for Lachlan Tigers at this address, in case anyone's still interested.

And has anybody in tbe last 8 years managed to trace the "Musselburgh Fair" song? I ought to have noticed its existence if it related to the Musselburgh near Edinburgh, but I've never heard of it.

Maybe there's a Musselburgh in Australia where it came from?

Sam Henry's "Songs of the People" has an Irish song which he says uses the tune of "Musselburgh Fair". He gives notation for the tune: doesn't look very Scottish to me, much more likely to be Irish or English.

One begins to wonder whether there really is such a song - or even a tune with that name. (It is the tune of "The Knickerbocker Line" and MacColl's "Second Front Song.")

Was it ever mentioned by anyone other than MacColl & Lloyd?

To the person looking for Arkle by D Behan

It happened in the spring-time of the year of sixty four,
When Englishmen were making pounds and fivers by the score
He beat them in the hollow and he beat them on the bumps
A pair of fancy fetlocks he showed them o'er the jumps.

He's English! He's English! As English as you've seen
A little bit of Arab stock and more from Stephen's Green
Take a look at Mill House and throw out your chest with pride
He's the greatest steeplechaser on the English countryside.

Then a quiet man called Dreaper livin' in the Emerald Isle
Said "That horse of yours called Mill House surely shows a bit of style,
"But I've a little fella and Arkle is his name,
"Put your money where you put your mouth and then we'll play the game."

Well the English racing gentleman laughed till fit to burst,
"You tried before Tom Dreaper and then you came off worst,
"If you think your horse could beat us you're runnin' short on brains
"It's Mill House that you want to fight and not those beastly Danes."

"Arkle now is five to two Mill House is money on,
"They're off! and dear believe I do the Champion has it won,
"There are other horses in this race to test the great chap's might
"But deary me it's plain to see the rest are out of sight."

"There are three more fences now to go he leads by twenty lengths
"Brave Arkle's putting in a show, poor chap he's all but spent
"Mill House sweeps on majestically great glory in each stride
"He's the greatest horse undoubledy within the whole world wide.

"Two to go still Arkle comes he's cutting down the lead,
"But he's beaten bar the shouting for he hasn't got the speed,
"They're up on one up to the last my God can he hold out,
"Look behind you Willie Robinson man what are you about?

"They're at the last and over Pat Taffe has more in hand,
"He's passing England's Mill House the finest in the land,
"My God he has us beaten! What can the English say?
"The ground was wrong? The distance long? Too early early in the day?"

Sam Henry predated them by quite a while.
