We listened to the radio, we watched them on TV
That I like baseball, I watch it on the tube
I had an uncle in New York who seemed to understand
But we girls weren't taught to throw the ball
However, can you tell me just who it is to blame

The only piece of California that I really clung to was the Dodgers. My God, what a team. I lived and died with them in those classic World Series' with the hated Yankees. What hitting...Duke Snider, Gil Hodges, Maury Wills. And the pitching! Don Drysdale, Larry Sherry, and the greatest of all time, Sandy Koufax! I was one rabid 11 year old fan, my eyes focussed on that old black and white screen, willing the Dodgers to win. And you know, despite all that talent, I'm really not sure they could have done it without me. |

Teams visiting at the Indians, the occasional Cincy game, but we were an American League family. I miss the players who truly played because they loved the game. There are so few today. I wanted to catch like Jim Hegan, play third like Brooks, make the bat crack loudly like The Mick. I posted all this elsewhere......... There are some great players in the game today, but the big money has changed the game and those who play it. Not many would make my "Modern Era" Fantasy Team. Spaw |

Through the game (and it's literature) I've learned SO MUCH about people (and myself). At school, I was so shy as to be virtually invisible, but through Little League and Pony and Babe Ruth League, I took on a completely different personality...outgoing, loud at times, analytical regarding how the game was played, and COMPETITIVE! In Canada, after Babe Ruth league, came nuthin', so that was it for me. Oh, I got to go to a Cubs tryout camp in Montreal one year, threw three pitches and had two of them knocked over the wall by the tough inner-city French kids. Adios dreams! I still read "Ball Four" by Jim Bouton ('bout 50 times now) and if my fanaticism is in doubt...I dedicted one of my albums to him! About 6 years ago while we were watching TV, the phone rang. Heather picked it up and spoke for about a minute, then passed it over to me saying, "It's some guy named "Bouton"...do ya wanna talk to him?" I Bloody near fainted!! Someone in New Jersey had seen the dedication on the album and told him about it, and he was calling to say thank you! I could have died happily right then. Rick's Baseball Quizzzz Part one. My classical guitar was within easy reach so I picked it up and started playing a Rag Time song roughly based on the traditional "Take Me Out.." I called it the "Ball Park Rag". As a small child in San Diego, my father used to take me to Lane Field to watch the Pacific Coast League Padres. It set right on the Embarcadero ,so you could look over the third base side at the harbor.The train tracks ran up the street outside the right field wall. Supposedly someone hit a homer over the wall and it bounced into a boxcar on its way to LA. 120 mile home run. rr |

Every game that I went to, they won. The good luck charm they never knew they had.... Spaw, big money HAS changed the game, but those who once played with grace--they've still got it. I had an opportunity to meet Willie Mays while he was at Candlestick presenting an award to Kevin Mitchell. While the players argued about contracts and commercials, Mr. Mays took the time to visit with kids who'd come to the park early. He didn't charge any money for an autograph, and never once told someone to speak to his agent. I don't care if I have to throw him over my shoulder and carry him around the bases myself, he'll make my fantasy team every time. Rick, you are very welcome, and reign as Quizmaster. It's really late, and I can only hazard a guess at #20. My guess is the same reason the Giants went on after ditching Clark, Mitchell, Williams, and Butler....They had all those plastic cups made up with the team logo still in the concession stands, and they're gonna keep playing until they run out of 'em. ~Elle |

Probably for the same reason I can't get into football any more. It just doesn't make sense for any one person to be making 8 million and up to play a game while there are so many folks in need. If ever some smart promoter put together a team of players that would play for a more down to earth pay scale and DONATE the rest of that money to those that needed it, that would be the team I would follow regardless of their record! I DO, however still follow our local high school football and LOVE watching a Little League baseball game! I am looking forward to the end of August when the World Series Little League is played in Williamsport. Those kids play for the love of the game, from their hearts, not from their wallets and are a pleasure to watch. When they are going after a long fly ball they are concerned about catching it and getting it back to the infield in hopes of tagging the opposition out, not shagging after the ball wondering if their agent can get them more money if they catch it! |

We lived in Schwenksville Pa. and my Mom is a huge fan. I'am a big hockey fan but when my boys started to play ball I got sucked in and love it now.We now live just outside of Reading Pa. and have the Reading Phils. It's really great to see the young players come threw the system. At one game we were in the seats before the start of a game and Scott Rolen picked my kid out of the crowd and brought him on the field and loosend up with him, he got to keep the ball and still has it in a case. Rolen is a class act and I know one young man who has a role model it's a shame they can't all be that way and remember where they came from. |

IMHO the ugliest ballpark ever constructed. Politics ate the game. We need a new park, people vote no, the park gets built anyway, and amazingly, people across the state are being taxed to pay for construction on the coast. I was particularly good at chatter. But I liked the unusual stuff, like "Easy batta easy batta just like his sister"..."Ugly batta socks are inside out racing stripe in his underwear hey batta"...stuff like that. Dixie Walker was the head of the group that wouldn't play with Robinson, Ebbets Field was one of the neatest Ball parks ever and Happy Felton was head of the Knothole gang that used to hang out in Right Center field and look through the knotholes drilled in the fence that opened onto Bedford Ave. The BROOKLYN DODGERS, dem bums will live forever. Now I root for Toronto and every Spring when they walk out onto the field I hear myself ask...Who ARE these guys ?" Personally, I'd love to see a team like Banj describes and add in an owner percentage, a TV percentage, and let the fan get involved too by still paying the same price as they would at other parks for tickets and concessions, but a portion goes back to the "Good Deeds Kitty." Also have the city sign a contract with the owner to maintain the park and have the team NOT move for at least ten years. Well .... Its OK to dream ain't it? Spaw

Do you know what it's like for a 14 year old boy to see his hometown team rise from the usual spot in the basement to their first World Series appearance in 13 years? I think you might know. When you jumped up and down like a madmad when they one...you're whole world revolved around the game. You knew all the pitchers, all the bench guys, every batter's stance, who was a good umpire and who was "dirty". The names have changed and so has the equipment, but when the Marlins won the World Series brought as much joy to me as when the Brooklyn Dodgers, them loveable bums, won their only series. We were on the Aircraft Carrier Ticonderoga in the Atlantic when they finally won. The entire ship went absolutely stark raving crazy. In the middle of Flight operations while landing planes, we swabbies were dancing on the flight deck. They had to wave off operations for 10 minutes to bring order back to the ship to continue landing operations. But believe me that magic is still felt today when your home town team wins it all. That is unless your a Yankee fan. |

Somehow the visual images on TV seem to be filled anymore with advertisements (they're in every shot folks) and distractions. There's something about that AM radio static that makes you listen with every fiber of your being. Mbo, you are right. I was/am the same way about my beloved '89Giants. Funny how those things stick with you. Of course having an earthquake shake the snot out of you tends to keep it in memory, but I'd still argue to the grave their right to be there. Granted with the rosters changing every time the wind changes direction, loyalty is a tough thing these days, but it's different when it's 'your' team. And Leej, you said it all. ~Elle |

Harriburg Pa hosting the Norwich Navigators. Bottom of the 9th inning the score Navigators 4 Senators 1, bases loaded with 2 outs full count and the batter hits a grand slam to win the game and championship. I think it was there 3rd in a row.

This was a trick question. The answer was Brian Milner - my brother in law. And the batting average of .444 covers BOTH weeks he was "in the game" until his diabetes sidelined him. I'd like to say I saw Bunning's perfect game against the Mets, June 21, 1964, but I went to see the movie Spartacus that day instead (it was Father's Day, and I sure wish I'd gone to the game with my dad). The Phils had a longstanding knack for choking, and in '64 they did it with a vengeance, losing their last 10 games after having been at the top of the league for most of the season. But it sure was a glorious season until then. I can still remember the numbers of most of the '64 players. (Life is simpler when you're ten.) I used to listen to the night games from the West Coast on my transistor radio with the covers pulled over my head. My dad took me to my first ball game at Connie Mack Stadium (he always called it by its old name, Shibe Park), and I'll never forget going from the dark musty interior out through the passageway and seeing that expanse of brilliant green grass. Veteran's Stadium just isn't the same. Now I get the Giants on the radio here in Hawaii, and I still love listening to the games and visualizing the field. Thanks for starting this, Rick.
