Okay, so it's all agreed we're Missin' Steve, but where are the baseball songs? Forgive me, and it's not meant as a gender slam in any way, but this one is for the girls.....

Summertime of '61, every Saturday
I'd take my own Spaghettios for dinner and I'd stay
My granddad was a quiet man doing crosswords in the chair
But he'd become a rabid fan with baseball on the air

We listened to the radio, we watched them on TV
Can't say I understood but it was magical to me
Especially the Yankees, we cheered for every move
And all those hours of Mickey Mantle finally would prove.......

That I like baseball, I watch it on the tube
I buy my tickets at the dome, go in and come unglued
I've been to Dodgers Stadium, seen the Sox at old Fenway
Oh I like baseball, even though I do not play

I had an uncle in New York who seemed to understand
One day he came to see us with presents in hand
He gave me not your usual doll, but cast in plaster of Paris
His bobbing head upon a spring, my idol, Roger Maris

But we girls weren't taught to throw the ball
The way that pitchers do
No matter how I swung the bat I only hit a few
Projectiles falling from the sky put fear into my heart
Too slow to run the bases well, it doomed me from the start
But I like baseball.....even though I cannot play

However, can you tell me just who it is to blame
That not since the '50's have women played the game
If they ever get a commissioner, the first thing she should do
Is put us back in uniform and we'll play hardball too
'Cause I like baseball....even though they don't let us play

Someday I'll be in heaven or in some such place above
And at the end of my outstretched wing will be a fielder's glove
I'll be batting homers completely out of sight
Me and Randy Johnson, we'll pitch at the speed of light
'Cause I like baseball...even though I do not play

I think it comes from being in New York ... a kinda' "better than any simple hick place" attitude. Then again, maybe it was a Shit Out and he Yankees were stoked up on Corned Beef and Cabbage. Or maybe a passing airliner dumped the storage tank over the stadium and they WERE in fact Shit Out of the place.

In 1960, my family moved from the LA area back to the place of my birth in Kentucky. The only piece of California that I really clung to was the Dodgers. My God, what a team. I lived and died with them in those classic World Series' with the hated Yankees. What hitting...Duke Snider, Gil Hodges, Maury Wills. And the pitching! Don Drysdale, Larry Sherry, and the greatest of all time, Sandy Koufax! I was one rabid 11 year old fan, my eyes focussed on that old black and white screen, willing the Dodgers to win. And you know, despite all that talent, I'm really not sure they could have done it without me.

I posted at the tail end of the "Steve" thread, but Leej....I know.

As a kid I got to see a lot of greats. Teams visiting at the Indians, the occasional Cincy game, but we were an American League family. I miss the players who truly played because they loved the game. There are so few today. I wanted to catch like Jim Hegan, play third like Brooks, make the bat crack loudly like The Mick. I posted all this elsewhere.........

There are some great players in the game today, but the big money has changed the game and those who play it. Not many would make my "Modern Era" Fantasy Team.

Thanks for the thread JenEllen.

Baseball is my PASSION...even in these watered down days. Through the game (and it's literature) I've learned SO MUCH about people (and myself).

At school, I was so shy as to be virtually invisible, but through Little League and Pony and Babe Ruth League, I took on a completely different personality...outgoing, loud at times, analytical regarding how the game was played, and COMPETITIVE!

In Canada, after Babe Ruth league, came nuthin', so that was it for me. Oh, I got to go to a Cubs tryout camp in Montreal one year, threw three pitches and had two of them knocked over the wall by the tough inner-city French kids. Adios dreams!

I still read "Ball Four" by Jim Bouton ('bout 50 times now) and if my fanaticism is in doubt...I dedicted one of my albums to him! About 6 years ago while we were watching TV, the phone rang. Heather picked it up and spoke for about a minute, then passed it over to me saying, "It's some guy named "Bouton"...do ya wanna talk to him?" I Bloody near fainted!! Someone in New Jersey had seen the dedication on the album and told him about it, and he was calling to say thank you! I could have died happily right then.

Rick's Baseball Quizzzz Part one. The simple questions. If anyone gets into it, then harder ones will follow.

#1.What pitcher did Don Larsen beat in "the perfect game" of '56.

#2.Joe Carter took "the wild thing" over the wall for the championship in '92. Who was the "the wild thing"? Who was the losing Mgr.? Where does he manage today?

#3. What Dodger farmhand became a big TV star?

#4. What band hired musicians partly on their ability to play baseball?

#5. Two great baseball personalities came from "the Hill" in StLouis. Both were catchers. Both were funny. One tried to be. The other didn't. Name 'em.

Rick

Jeez, you're good Frankie! Not Bobbie Cox and not Atlanta. Ya got the rest.

Here's a couple more:

#6. Name the Ozzie pitching today in the bigs.

#7. What was Elroy Face's "out pitch"?

#8. Who is credited with devising the "split finger fast ball"?

#9. A Big League team played a College team in a scheduled game..that counted in the standings. Why?

#10. A relief pitcher fronts his own recorded Punk Rock band. Name him.

I told ya they'd get harder. Don't forget question #2.

One day I cut a super market apple in half and It was so hard and green inside that I thought I would just sit there and watch it turn brown. It was very slow going and after about an hour and a half my thoughts turned to baseball. Actually, not the game of baseball, but the song "Take Me Out To The Ball Game".

My classical guitar was within easy reach so I picked it up and started playing a Rag Time song roughly based on the traditional "Take Me Out.." I called it the "Ball Park Rag". My question is ~~ Did I actually write the tune ~ or did I hear it somewhere and somehow, some way, it got stuck in me brain?

Rick, you could probably Field this one.

Catspaw gets 2 and 7. Meebo gets 6!

Actually Black Jack has a "rock band" per se. This relief pitcher (who gets played on the show after mine) is "Proudly Punk".

#11. World Series relief pitching star (early 70s, I think) now respected physician.

#12. Detroit pitching star in 60s, now Congressman.

#13. Career ended by Charlie Hustle in an All Star Game. Name the Indian.

#14. Several Brooklyn Dodgers circulated a petition stating that they "could not be forced to share a locker room with a "nigger". A prominent Southerner on the team refused to sign, and had his locker changed to be next to the (obviously) scared newcomer. Who was that very courageous Dodger who befriended Jackie Robinson?

#15. What player was killed on the field? (in the 20s)

Just finished watching Kevin Costner's " For the Love Of the Game". Great movie!
As a small child in San Diego, my father used to take me to Lane Field to watch the Pacific Coast League Padres. It set right on the Embarcadero ,so you could look over the third base side at the harbor. The train tracks ran up the street outside the right field wall. Supposedly someone hit a homer over the wall and it bounced into a boxcar on its way to LA. 120 mile home run.

Leej, I know exactly how you feel. How do you think the Giants got to the series in '89? Every game that I went to, they won. The good luck charm they never knew they had....

Spaw, big money HAS changed the game, but those who once played with grace--they've still got it. I had an opportunity to meet Willie Mays while he was at Candlestick presenting an award to Kevin Mitchell. While the players argued about contracts and commercials, Mr. Mays took the time to visit with kids who'd come to the park early. He didn't charge any money for an autograph, and never once told someone to speak to his agent. I don't care if I have to throw him over my shoulder and carry him around the bases myself, he'll make my fantasy team every time.

Rick, you are very welcome, and reign as Quizmaster. It's really late, and I can only hazard a guess at #20. My guess is the same reason the Giants went on after ditching Clark, Mitchell, Williams, and Butler....They had all those plastic cups made up with the team logo still in the concession stands, and they're gonna keep playing until they run out of 'em.

I used to like baseball, but after the big strike I can no longer get into it. Probably for the same reason I can't get into football any more. It just doesn't make sense for any one person to be making 8 million and up to play a game while there are so many folks in need. If ever some smart promoter put together a team of players that would play for a more down to earth pay scale and DONATE the rest of that money to those that needed it, that would be the team I would follow regardless of their record! I DO, however still follow our local high school football and LOVE watching a Little League baseball game! I am looking forward to the end of August when the World Series Little League is played in Williamsport. Those kids play for the love of the game, from their hearts, not from their wallets and are a pleasure to watch. When they are going after a long fly ball they are concerned about catching it and getting it back to the infield in hopes of tagging the opposition out, not shagging after the ball wondering if their agent can get them more money if they catch it!

I was never really a huge baseball fan just kinda rooted for the fighting Phils. We lived in Schwenksville Pa. and my Mom is a huge fan. I'am a big hockey fan but when my boys started to play ball I got sucked in and love it now.We now live just outside of Reading Pa. and have the Reading Phils. It's really great to see the young players come threw the system. At one game we were in the seats before the start of a game and Scott Rolen picked my kid out of the crowd and brought him on the field and loosend up with him, he got to keep the ball and still has it in a case. Rolen is a class act and I know one young man who has a role model it's a shame they can't all be that way and remember where they came from.

Banjer; Little League is awesome, playing for the game. For more 'good game' check out the WNBA and Women's Soccer teams. Sportsmanship at it's finest. Only because they don't let the girls play baseball (YET!!)

We're having the $ troubles here too. I have yet to go to a game in Safeco Field. IMHO the ugliest ballpark ever constructed. Politics ate the game. We need a new park, people vote no, the park gets built anyway, and amazingly, people across the state are being taxed to pay for construction on the coast. Of course, the players don't take a pay-cut....

When we would take the field and the batter came to the plate, the Coach always yelled "Little chatter out there!" I was particularly good at chatter. Most of your infielders would use the old standbys..."Hey batta batta batta SWING batta batta"..."C'mon pitch make him hit make him hit"..."C'mon insert pitcher's name here give him one right down the old stovepipe!" But I liked the unusual stuff, like "Easy batta easy batta just like his sister"..."Ugly batta socks are inside out racing stripe in his underwear hey batta"...stuff like that. I got an amazing number of balls hit to me.

LOL Leej! Reminds me of the one and ONLY time I was allowed to call a Little League game.

The guy who was supposed to call never showed, so they needed a body to sit in the box and call numbers. Easy enough, right? Also boring as hell. And since I knew most of these kids from hauling them around all summer in my IH Travelall, I had the good dirt as well.

"He's mean, he's lean, he's not allowed to cross the street without permission......number 12, Tommy Johnson!"
"And here's number 22, Jake Marshall, let's hope he has better luck here than he did with Susie Cunningham!"
The kids paused for a second, then the dugouts were overflowing with laughing 10 year olds. they kept sneaking out to come to the box and give me information for the next inning. What a riot. I can't even remember who won, only that we all left with aching sides, and both teams loaded into my rig and went for ice cream.

I still love to listen to baseball on the radio, there is something magical about sitting in a darkened room, only the dim glow of the dial connecting you to the field. I always have warm roasted penuts in the shell..it all takes me back to 1954.. Johnny Antonellie, Dusty Rhodes and the incredible Willie Mays. Oh, the 54 Giants... Now I root for Toronto and every Spring when they walk out onto the field I hear myself ask...Who ARE these guys ?" It is very hard to be loyal to a new roster of players each year, all of whom make more than the prevous bunch....I feel sad for the grand old game.

I think you sum it up nicely:

"Who ARE these guys?"

And I want to blame SOMEBODY for messing up the game!!! Who, I have no idea. Anybody can make a case for blaming the: A)Owners B)Players C)Television D)Fans E)All of the Above.

Personally, I'd love to see a team like Banj describes and add in an owner percentage, a TV percentage, and let the fan get involved too by still paying the same price as they would at other parks for tickets and concessions, but a portion goes back to the "Good Deeds Kitty." Also have the city sign a contract with the owner to maintain the park and have the team NOT move for at least ten years.

Well .... Its OK to dream ain't it?

My Dream Team:(the most exciting players I've ever seen)

1. Don Mattingly, 2. Robbie Alomar, 3. Brooks Robinson, SS. Tony Fernandez (Ozzie Smith), LF. Ted Williams, CF. Mickey Mantle, RF. Carl Furillo, C. Pudge Rodrigues, P. Sandy Koufax, Dave Steib, Roger Clemens, RP.(relief) Tom Henke, Duane Ward.

When I was younger we'd while away the time with all Italian, Irish, Spanish etc. teams.

Hey, don't tell me that modern baseball stinks. Do you know what it's like for a 14 year old boy to see his hometown team rise from the usual spot in the basement to their first World Series appearance in 13 years? I think you might know. When you jumped up and down like a madmad when they one...you're whole world revolved around the game. You knew all the pitchers, all the bench guys, every batter's stance, who was a good umpire and who was "dirty". When the runner should try for home...it all happened for me in '93 with the Philadelphia Phillies. It's a summer and fall I will never forget. Don't tell ME the magic is gone!

Mbo - your so right, the magic is never gone. The names have changed and so has the equipment, but when the Marlins won the World Series brought as much joy to me as when the Brooklyn Dodgers, them loveable bums, won their only series. We were on the Aircraft Carrier Ticonderoga in the Atlantic when they finally won. The entire ship went absolutely stark raving crazy. In the middle of Flight operations while landing planes, we swabbies were dancing on the flight deck. They had to wave off operations for 10 minutes to bring order back to the ship to continue landing operations. But believe me that magic is still felt today when your home town team wins it all. That is unless your a Yankee fan.

It don't matter who's playing. When your team's down by one in the bottom of the ninth, there's two outs, a full count, and a man on third, the magic transcends all the contract haggling, egos and bullshit. Even the slings and arrows of your own existence go right out the window, and there is only the eternal energy of that moment. It's the same for the 12 year old with the taped bat as it is for the jaded Pro. It don't matter who's playing.

Guest, I equate listening to game on the radio with reading great books. Somehow the visual images on TV seem to be filled anymore with advertisements (they're in every shot folks) and distractions. There's something about that AM radio static that makes you listen with every fiber of your being.

Mbo, you are right. I was/am the same way about my beloved '89Giants. Funny how those things stick with you. Of course having an earthquake shake the snot out of you tends to keep it in memory, but I'd still argue to the grave their right to be there. Granted with the rosters changing every time the wind changes direction, loyalty is a tough thing these days, but it's different when it's 'your' team.

And Leej, you said it all.

Lonesome EJ, You would have enjoyed the 1999 "aa" Eastren league championship series, it was game 7. Harriburg Pa hosting the Norwich Navigators. Bottom of the 9th inning the score Navigators 4 Senators 1, bases loaded with 2 outs full count and the batter hits a grand slam to win the game and championship. I think it was there 3rd in a row.

Good point JenEllen. I constantly badmouth Peter Deangelis with his musical ballplayers policy but if the Orioles were to win one I could forgive plenty.
Sailor Dan, I don't quite understand what you mean by "...unless you're a Yankee fan." This current edition of the Yanks is the best team I've seen in a long while. They systematically take apart teams with good sound fundamental baseball and they do it like pros (this from a lifelong O's fan, and, alas, a Senators fan and admittedly a closet Yank fan).

To Guest Frankie

Please be advised that to the "Brooklyn Dodger" fans, the two most hated teams that were ever in existence were The New York Yankees and The New York Giants.

This is a definate holdover from my growing up days and Half may family are yankee fans (notice the lower case) so I still "hate" the yankees. As far as their playing abilities go even I have to admit they are good. But they are still the yankees

Since there seem to be a few Toronto Blue Jays fans here I'll ask if anyone can name a Toronto catcher that was signed out of high school in the late 70's and had a lifetime batting ave. of .444 ?? I'll be suprised if anyone can name him.

Wesley, was it you? It sure couldn't have been Alan Ashby or Ernie Whitt!

We need a catcher who can hit TWO forty four!

Rick - No not me - I was always one of the last guys chosen for a team. Theres a song there, somewhere.

This was a trick question. The answer was Brian Milner - my brother in law. And the batting average of .444 covers BOTH weeks he was "in the game" until his diabetes sidelined him. He's a scout now.

Jim Bunning pitched for the Phillies, too, Rick. I can forgive Mbo for not picking up on that; he wasn't born then. I'd like to say I saw Bunning's perfect game against the Mets, June 21, 1964, but I went to see the movie Spartacus that day instead (it was Father's Day, and I sure wish I'd gone to the game with my dad). The Phils had a longstanding knack for choking, and in '64 they did it with a vengeance, losing their last 10 games after having been at the top of the league for most of the season. But it sure was a glorious season until then. I can still remember the numbers of most of the '64 players. (Life is simpler when you're ten.) I used to listen to the night games from the West Coast on my transistor radio with the covers pulled over my head. My dad took me to my first ball game at Connie Mack Stadium (he always called it by its old name, Shibe Park), and I'll never forget going from the dark musty interior out through the passageway and seeing that expanse of brilliant green grass. Veteran's Stadium just isn't the same. Now I get the Giants on the radio here in Hawaii, and I still love listening to the games and visualizing the field. Thanks for starting this, Rick.
Aloha,
Mark
