Subject: Lyr Add: BALLAD OF DAVY CREW-CUT (Homer & Jethro)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 12 Dec 03 - 12:11 AM

Lyrics transcribed from the sound file at http://www.geocities.com/u2page6/

THE BALLAD OF DAVY CREW-CUT
(As sung by Homer & Jethro)

Born in a taxicab in Tennessee,
Slowest cab that you ever did see.
Warmed up his bottle an' he took 'im a nip.
He didn't even leave the driver a tip.
Davy, Davy Crew-Cut, the cat with the coonskin cap.

He was the cleanest baby that you ever saw.
When he sucked his thumb, he used a straw.
He liked the girls instead of toys.
He liked 'em ever since he found they weren't boys.
Davy, Davy Crew-Cut, the cat with the coonskin cap.

Davy was so lazy that he wouldn't raise his thumb.
He used a bicycle pump to blow up his bubblegum.
Became a politician in Washington D. C.
He took him a bribe when he was only three.
Davy, Davy Crew-Cut, the cat with the coonskin cap.

Well, he entered a contest in Tennessee.
And Mr. America he thought he'd be.
The judge looked 'im over an' said, "Who's this drip?"
An' Davy nearly lost his citizenship.
Davy, Davy Crew-Cut, the cat with the coonskin cap.

Well, he went a-bar-huntin' all alone.
Well, he grinned but the bar bit him clean to the bone.
Davy got the lockjaw an' had to go to bed.
He sneezed an' he blowed off the top of his head.
Davy, Davy Crew-Cut. He can't live his legend down.
He had the only crew-cut coonskin cap in town.

[Recorded by Homer & Jethro on "Ooh, That's Corny," 1963; "The Humorous Side of Country Music with Homer & Jethro," 1963; and "Assault the Rock & Roll Era," 1989.]

My nephews wrote this song when they were about 8 and ten years old:

Borned on a mountaintop in Tennessee
Ripped my pants on a Christmas tree
Patched them up with some bubble gum
Along come a bear and he asked for some

   Davey, Davey Crocket,
   King of the wild frontier

Slept on a table top in Joe's Cafe
Greasiest joint in the U.S.A.
Ordered a gridley and that ain't all
Next thing I new I was in City Hall

And I added a third verse because the song was too short

Went to see the Mayor just to set him straight
Found him swinging on the Pearly Gate
Charged me a dollar and he let me go
So I wandered on down to the Alamo

I still like singing it every once in awhile

Jerry

Anyone interested in additional original lyrics to this favorite song from my childhood E. mail me and I'll send 'em to you. One verse from original and all from the "Mike Fink" episode.
Sample:
The country was big when it was new,
the best men was big and their yarns was too.
The tallest tales folks believed was true,
and the more they was told, the bigger they grew.
Davy, Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier
