Beck was difficult to categories, in my opinion. I really had forgotten that this was his song because it seems more folksy to me. It's a boppy little tune, but I suspect a person could get tired of singing it or hearing after a relatively short time.

I like this one. Deceptively simple.

This song popped into my head this week.

I suspect it is because I know a COVID anti-vaxxer woman who fits the lyrics of the song.

I forgot it was by Jeff Beck so I had it in my head that it was Donovan. That's why I just Googled the song and found this Mudcat thread. I should have re-read my post on 29 Apr 00 - 08:13 PM sooner, eh!

Marty, believe it or not, compared with the average response rate at Mudcat, this has been a very slow thread from your initial question on 29 April to getting the lyrics and chords on 3 May. What this means is, no matter how long you have to wait someone at the 'Cat usually has the answer, knows something about it or knows where to find the answer.

Thanks for the question. I enjoyed this thread - for nostalgic reasons as well as for the thrill of the chase.

This song has a peculiar effect on people! At our Silver Wedding bash some years ago we hired a local band who did '50s and '60s music. When they played this, all the 40-somethings jumped up and started waving their arms in the air while I and the 50-somethings watched openmouthed (my normal state!)in bewilderment!
Then, of course, my reaction to Blue Suede Shoes was perfectly normal and didn't cause more than a dozen or so casualties on the dance floor!

What you need to do is (he said, crossing his fingers):

• make sure that you type in the original text using a fixed font rather than a proportional one (so that you get the spacing right). For example select Courier New.
• include the HTML tag <FONT FACE="Courier,'Courier New'"> just before the text.
• include the HTML tag </FONT> after the text (this is important, else the rest of the thread can finish up using the same font!)

For example, entering:

It is a favourite at discos and is a join in the chorus song where everyone punches the air and shouts as loud as they can. I used to get a kick out of the reaction but if it's little known elsewhere the reaction is likely to be an obscure look from those who don't understand the profound lyrics ;).

If you use the Courier font it might help - then again it might not, but it may be worth a try. The reason for this is that the letters are all spaced at the same width. In this font the letters are only spaced as wide as they need to be, e.g. iiiii and mmmmm should end up being different widths on the thread, although they look the same in this reply box because it uses Courier font.

Joe Offer or another techno-head will probably give you a nifty technical solution using html, though. :-)

I've taking a certain amount of delight in telling people I've given up folk music and joined a rock n roll band. Which is patently untrue, but I love the reaction I get. I don't think David Essex ha srecorded this track. My other half has evrything EVERYTHING he has done.

Jeff Beck apparently refuses to play this now, concidering it too tacky. I on the other hand had no such grace when we used to do it in a band I was with. A great crowd pleaser.

Anyway somewhere I must still have the chords we used I'll look 'em out for you anonymous guest, if you can wait till Tuesday and someone dosen't beat me.
