Subject: Help, I need a Panamanian Folk Song!!
From: Rick Fielding

"Well, there go my Noriega jokes!"

I've just found out that there will be a number of Panamanian exchange students coming out to a concert I'm doing this Saturday, and I can't think of one appropriate song to do especially for them. Does anyone have a Panamanian folk song (preferably VERY simple) handy?

I've checked all my books and haven't turned up anything.

Thanks

Rick

Hi me again. Just bringing it back up to see if any Ozzies or Brits might take a crack at it.

Hi, Rick, I checked my lullaby book...it has one Spanish lullaby entitled "Duerme, Nino Chiquito" with the words in English, only! The book is Lullabies of Many Lands by Dorothy Berliner Commins, pub. 1941 by Harper & Bros. It looks like a fairly simple melody. I could make a midi of it & send it with the words to you.

My The Music Hour-Fifth Book , pub. 1937, has several Spanish songs in it, as does my Blending Voices pub. 1943. Some of them are "Pedro & Cita"; "Gypsy Dancers"; "In the Plaza"; "Pepita"; "Where the Roses"; and "The Yellow Rose". Those are all in the "Blending Voices" and all are listed as Spanish Folk Songs. I am sure none of them would be that difficult for you to learn; I'd just have to get you a midi.

Now, I am off to web search...see if I can find anything else. You KNOW I love to do that!**BG**

Rick and Kat, in this site you will find two nice "pasillos" to hear: "Suspiros de una fea" and "Lindita", both very classical folk pieces, but.. still no lyrics. Will try and come back.
Un abrazo - Andrés

Cool, Andres! I found a site with EXTENSIVE links to ALL kinds of Latin American music sites. Check it out, Rick, I'll bet you could find a guitar piece to play, if the one Andres linked doesn't work out. Here's the a href=http://facstaff.uww.edu/allsenjm/CMA/LINKS/LA.htm>clickie

No luck with the lyrics, but here there are interesting notes on Panama folklore. Will try again.
Un abrazo - Andrés

This one has what looks like a very good explanation of the various types of Latin music and a bunch of midis.

I think that is it for my search. If you want anything from my books, just holler, okay?

Thanks Kat and Andres and everyone else. I'm trying to absorb the info now. What I need is one song that Panamanians feel is THEIR'S. Hopefully it will be simple, 'cause I haven't got a whole lot of time before the concert.

Rick
