That's right folks, we did it. The fund raising was effective and we got our new technology and I found the time to pull it off. If you've noticed the Mudcat has been a little squirly lately, that is why. There are over 218,000 messages in the forum now, which made up a 600+ MegaByte index file that the SuperSearch gets its answers from.

Now, there may be a couple of bugs, and the only way to find out how much this new machine and system works is to just put it live and let you all at it. So have fun. I will continue to be working on it, so if it glitches or doesn't work when you try it, just wait a few and try again.

I have several more changes (more like additions) on the way, so keep your eyes out for new and exciting things.

Man, that is one impressive search and sort! Nice work, Max!! One question -- forum search results come back with posted by "n/a" even though a member's User Name is in the actual post? Sup wid dat? But it's trivial, just a technical curiousity...howfja do that? You run an indexer all night looking for any string over four letters long? Hey, you da Man!

The n/a shows up when someone posts without a cookie, and before we started keeping track of that, not sure exactly when.

The indexer is a pretty popular product called Verity. Its specific rules are somewhat elusive. The query, I wrote to dig the stuff out of the database. It takes several hours to run, and that is something I am going to have to be careful with and experiment cause it can certainly crash the whole site. It will take a while to perfect, but hey, it's a start.

I dunno, Max. It doesn't seem to always come out that way. For an example, a SuperSearch for "Joxer" brings up several posts from two recent threads about "Joxer Goes to Stuttgart." Several posts from cookiefied members (including myself and Ed Pellow) have n/a, and posts from "GUEST,Brigid in the mountains" are shown as such.

Oh, yes, SDShad, that is something I have yet to finish yet. I need to write a more complex query to get the usernames dug out cause all we store in the table of messages is one's memberID. So I need to dig that out, then query the member table to turn it into a name. It'll take some time...

The search itself looks good and pretty quick. Never heard of Verity though - I can run to SQL but that is about my lot when it comes to querying databases.

Take your time and do it right. This is such a great improvement from the past and so easy to use that I'm sure we can all live with the as is until the when is.

But this is Mudcat so...........

I dunno' ... I just think it was better before when there weren't so many messages and people, but if this is it could you also include a program in it so when I search I get to automatically whine about everything? I mean I do appreciate the new rope and the wonderful hanging you've given me, but the old rope was softer and the new knot has a harder piece on it that bites into..............

I have to admit I found a way to use SuperSearch when it was supposedly not working - but I only did it at non-peak times when I was really stumped and needed help. A few other people figured it out, too - but I made them all take an oath of silence.

Max,
as you would know I am a new kid? on the block.
So I never had the chance to use the previous one.
I would look like a snivelling grovelling butt kissing liar, if I said things like WONDERFUL, or THE BEST YET or even WOW MAX WHAT A BEAUTY, because I have no base for comparison.
I say this ,it seems pretty fantastic to me ,but I don't know a lot do I, so trust the reviews of the ones that do.

I just found an oddity on the Super Search.

IF I put "Farewell to Nova Scotia", it doesn't find the thread with that in the title.

Going back to the older Forum Search, it DID find it, easily. Strange!

I was able to find it in Super Search using just "Nova Scotia". But it strange.
