WHERE THE OLD RED RIVER FLOWS
(Jimmie Davis/Peer Int., BMI)

I'm dreamin' tonight of Dixie, cotton fields an' whippoorwills,
I spent my happy childhood 'neath the rocks and among the rills.
I can see my dear old mother as around the place she goes,
On my farm in Louisiana where the old Red River flows.

(Chorus:) Ah-lee-oh-de-lady-oo.
You can hear the old folks singin' soft an' low
At the twilight in the evenin' so soft an' low-oo-oo, so low-oo.
On my farm in Louisiana where the old Red River flows.

The lights so bright on Broadway, the city's bright as day,
And there on Coney Island where the ripplin' waters play
I'll be headin' south for Dixie on that I. C. when she goes
To my farm in farm in Louisiana where the old Red River flows. (Chorus)

CHURCH STREET BLUES
(Norman Blake/Happy Valley Music, BMI)

Lord, I been a-hangin' out of town in that low-down rain.
Watchin' good-time-Charlie friends is a-drivin' me insane.
Out on shady Charlotte Street the green lights look red.
Wish I's back home on the farm in my feather bed.

(Chorus:) Get myself a rockin' chair to see if I could lose
Them thin-dime, hard-time, hell-on-Church-Street blues.

Found myself a picker-friend's read yesterday's news
Folded up page twenty-one, stuck it in my shoes.
Gave me a nickel to the poor, my good turn for today,
Folded up my old billfold and I threw it far away. (Chorus)

Lord, I wish I had some guitar strings, old Black Diamond brand.
I'd string up this old Martin box and go and join some band.
But I guess I'm gonna stay right here, just pick and sing awhile,
Try to make me a little change and give them folks a smile. (Chorus twice)

WORRIED BLUES
(Traditional?)

Don't your home look lonesome when your baby pack up and leave?
Home looks so lonesome.
Don't your home look lonesome when your baby pack up and leave?

Home looks so lonesome, when your baby pack up and leave.
Home look lonesome.
Home looks so lonesome, when your baby pack up and leave

Don't the sun look lonesome shinin' down through the tree?
Don't the sun look lonesome?
Sun looks so lonesome, shinin' down through the tree.

Oh, tell me, baby, what's the matter now?
I wanta know.
Oh, Lordy, baby, tell me what's the matter now.

Is you gon' quit your daddy anyhow?
Is you quit yo' ...
You gon' quit yo' daddy anyhow?

Baby, that's all right, that's all right for you.
Baby, that's all right.
Baby, that's all right, honey, that's all right for you.

Well, you know I love you, any way you do
You know I love you.
You know I love you, any old way you do.

I wanta know what's the matter. Something going on wrong?
Tell me what's the matter, baby.
Went away last night, an' you stayed out all night long.

Honey, that's all right, that's all right for you.
Baby, that's all right.
I love you baby, any old way you do.

With the sun goin' down, ain't this a lonesome place?
Sun goin' down.
Sun goin' down, ain't this a lonesome place?

I feel so lonely, I can't see my baby's face.
...
So lonesome here, I can't see my baby's face.

Oh, Lordy, baby, please don't put me down.
Please.
You are the sweetest girl in town.

Don't your home look lonesome when your baby pack up and leave?
Home looks so lonesome.
Home looks so lonesome when your baby pack up and leave.

SLY OLD CROW
(Traditional)

Sly little crow was a-sittin' on an oak,
Fa the riddle diddle eye dee oh.
Watchin' a tailor cuttin' out a coat.
And it's "hey ho" said the sly little crow.
Fa the riddle diddle eye dee oh.

Go and fetch my arrow and bow.
And I will shoot yon sly little crow.

Well, I shot and I shot but I missed somehow.
I missed that crow and I shot the old sow.

MIDNIGHT ON THE STORMY DEEP
(traditional)

'Twas midnight on the stormy deep, my solitary watch I keep,
And to think of her I left behind, and ask if she'd be true and kind.

I never shall forget the day that I was forced to go away,
In silence there my hand she pressed and pressed me to her loving breast.

Oh, Willie, don't go back to sea. There's other girls as good as me.
But none can love you true as I. Pray don't go where the bullets fly.

The deep, deep sea may us divide, and I may be some other's bride.
But still my thoughts will sometimes stray to be where thou art far away.

I never have proved false to thee. The heart I gave was true as thine.
But you have proven untrue to me. I can no longer call thee mine.

So fare thee well. I'd rather make my home upon some icy lake,
Where the southern sun refused to shine than to trust a love so false as thine.

SWEET LUCY
(Michael Hurley/Happy Valley Music, BMI)

When we left, it was cold. Each other's hands we had to hold.
We was drunk in Tennessee. She got drunk, as drunk as me.
She run up the hill. She cried and cried. I run down the other side.
(Chorus:) Oh, sweet Lucy, oh, sweet Lucy, oh, sweet Lucy, let me go.

Police come, they took my wine. They put us in jail. Hundred-dollar fine.
I could hear her cryin' over the wall in the women's detention hall.
I got on the phone. My mama spoke, "Sorry, son, but your mama's broke." (Chorus)

Wherever I go, I get sad. Seems like sorrow lives in the air.
In the wide-open skies of California, there was sorrow way out there.
Five get you ten that you don't get back. Five get you ten that you better go fast. (Chorus)

Oh, Harry Hubcaps and Jack the Fluke, they bought a bottle, holy Luke. (?)
They was buddies but they had a fight. They broke the jukebox. They broke the light.
Big old Fluke weighed three hundred pound. Fell on Harry when Harry fell down. (Chorus)

My old lady says, "Gimme that wine." I said, "Honey, quit drinking sometime."
She says, "Snock, it's not my fault. Had to eat my pork chop without no salt."
She run up the hill. She cried and cried. I run down the other side. (Chorus)

When the angels pour upon us their vilesome (?) breath forevermore.

(Chorus:) When the fire comes down from heaven, and the blood shall fill the sea,
I'll be carried home by Jesus and forever with Him be.

The beast with horns will come upon you, one of seven left within,
Men will cry unto the mountain, they'll pray to die but cannot win. (Chorus)

THE MEMORY OF YOUR SMILE
(Ruby Rakes/Fort Knox-Trio Music)

Well, I'm walkin' from one bar to another,
And I don't know where I've gone or where I've been
No one I meet realizes
That I'm tryin' when I know that I can't win

(Chorus:) It's the memory of your smile that nearly drives me wild.
Ain't nothin' ever gonna ease my mind.
I thought that you'd be true. I counted so on you.
I'm lost from a love I'll never find.

Well, I don't know where this pain's gonna wind me.
It gets worse day by day since you're gone.
Well, if only you'd come back and see me,
I know that's my only chance from now on. (Chorus)

OLD COUNTRY STOMP
(Traditional)

Fare thee well, fare thee well. Fare thee well, fare thee well.

Way down yonder above the moon, bluebird nest in a silver spoon.

Way down yonder above the sky, redbird nest in the bluebird's eye.

Way down yonder in a hollow log, redbird danced with a green bullfrog.

I got a house in Baltimore, forty-dollar carpet on the floor.

Streetcar runnin' right by my door. Fare thee well, Baltimore.

Way down yonder in the valley-o can't get around for the calico.
Jenny hang the kettle on the big knob a little, Jenny hang the kettle and we'll all drink tea.

Way down yonder in the valley-o, my gal dressed up in calico. My gal dressed up in calico.
Jenny hang the kettle on the big knob a little, Jenny hang the kettle and we'll all drink tea.

Purtiest little girl in the county-o, mama and papa all tell her so.
Little more sugar in the coffee, little more sugar in the coffee-o.

Wind blow high, wind blow low, blowed sugar in the coffee-o.

I'm goin' back to the valley, and I never more will roam.

My old home is in the valley where the Shenandoah flows.

But I left her there a-cryin'. I'm sorry now for what I've done. (Chorus)

HILLS OF HOME
(Hazel Dickens, Happy Valley Music, BMI)

There ain't much that's left here that ain't all run down.
Gone all the echoes of old familiar sound.
Families are scattered, parted, and gone.
Left a lot of good things to wither away back home.

(Chorus:) Can't you feel those hills around you?
Can't you feel that touch of home?
And don't you wish you'd never gone?
There are some things memories can't bring home.
Hills of home, hills of home,
Families scattered off and gone.
These old hills that have been passed by,
Well, they've seen their share of leavin' in their time.

Old familiar dirt roads wind through the piney glade,
Where all the longing of childhood dreams were made,
Where we passed the mossy mounds where I could run and play,
Never a care to cross my mind all the livelong day. (Chorus)

Yes, they've seen their share of leavin' in their time.

SHE DID YOU A FAVOR

Did you a favor when she walked out of your door.
Had the nerve to tell you that she didn't love you no more.
Before you get the habit livin' with the blues,
Stop and look around an' see what love can do.
Did you a favor when she walked out your door.

Never miss your water till your well runs dry
Way that you got treated, man, be glad you said goodbye.
She did you a favor when she walked out your door.
Had the nerve to tell you she didn't want you no more.

Did you a favor when she walked out of your door.
Had the nerve to tell you that she didn't love you no more.
Laughed as she left you 'fore things got too bad
Might have seen more trouble than you ever had.
Did you a favor when she walked out your door.

'Fore you start to worry, try and understand.
You can get yourself another woman, just like she got herself another man.
She did you a favor when she walked out your...
She did you a favor when she walked out your door.

Don't even try to call her on the telephone.
Find you someone new to love, man, make the blues leave you alone.
She did you a favor when she walked out your door.
Then she had the nerve to say she didn't love you no more.

Yes, she did you a favor, walked out of your door
Had the nerve to tell you she didn't love you no more.

RACETRACK BLUES
(David Olney/Hardball Music)

I don't need no racetrack just to watch my pony,
Watch my pony, I mean, see her run.
I don't need no racetrack just to watch my pony run.
But I don't need no million dollars, people, to have my fun.

Well the doctor said to slow down, he said, "Please slow down, 'cause I'd,
Hate to see you, I mean, fall down dead."
Yeah, the Doctor said to slow down 'cause he'd hate to see me fall down dead.
Well, he might know my body but he sure don't know my head.

Not much at looks, she never cooks,
People, she can move me like a dozen dirty books.
I don't care what people say, I'm wild about my gal.
Well, she my good-time mama, I'm a true-blue pal, yes I am.

Some likes 'em tall; some likes 'em small.
I ain't proud, people, I'll take anything at all
And you know where to find me: I'm at Rusty's Bar and Grille.
If you're moved to come and see me, bring a five-dollar bill.
(Semi-spoken:) Pay for your own drinks!

HIGH ON A MOUNTAIN
(Ola Bell Reed/Midstream Music)

High on a mountain, wind blowing free,
Thinking about the days that used to be.
High on a mountain, standing all alone,
Wondering where the years of my life have flown.

As I looked at the valleys down below,
They were green just as far as I could see.
As my memories turned, oh, how my heart has yearned,
For you and the days that used to be.

Oh, I wonder if you ever think of me,
Or if time has blotted out your memory.
As I listen to that breeze whisper gently through the trees,
I'll always cherish what you meant to me.

(Repeat first verse.)

You got me ball-and-chained. I musta been insane. Baby, please don't go

(Repeat first verse.)

I wanta be your slave. I wanta be your slave.
I wanta be your slave till I'm in my grave. Baby, please don't go.

Subject: Lyr Add: I'LL NEVER GO BACK^^
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 03 May 00 - 05:02 PM

I'LL NEVER GO BACK
(Charles & Ira Louvin/Acuff-Rose, BMI)

I once was bound by the chains of sin.
There was no light to shine within.
Down on my knees I knelt and prayed,
And He took my burdens all away.

(Chorus:) I'll never go back to the ways of sin.
Where the Lord found me and took me in.
He came to me and I won't go back. (?)
To the ways of sin I'll never go back.

As I travel on this narrow way,
I'll help the lost to find their way.
I'll shine my light so the world can see
What a saving grace has done for me. (Chorus)

At the set of sun I'll be going home,
To rest my soul around the throne.
I'll bid farewell in a little while,
And change my tears for a lasting smile. (Chorus)

As sung by the Louvin Brothers on "Songs That Tell a Story," Rounder 1030. Also in the collection "Hills of Home," Rounder CD AN 18/19. @gospel JTD

MMario: Sorry, I don't have any music, sheet or otherwise. I'm not even a musician, hardly. (Sometimes I think I must be the only Mudcatter who isn't.) I'm hoping someone else will take on the task of transcribing the tunes. I figure I'll just stick to what I'm good at, at least until I run out of albums. Then I can always buy more!

You may notice a few question marks (?) in the above text. That's where I'm not sure I got the words right, although I did write down my best guess. An elipsis followed by a question mark ... (?) means I don't have a clue what they were singing and I didn't even dare to guess. An elipsis alone ... just means I am noting the fact that there was a pause in the singing at this point. Corrections are welcome.

I didn't post ALL the songs on this 2-CD collection, only the ones that weren't already in DigiTrad, or in some thread. More info later.

It's a good collection. I found the two cassette set at a bookstore called Borders here in St. Petersburg for only $6.99...I've about wore out the tape deck in my truck from playing them. Highly reccomend the set for a diverse selection of different types of folk music.

Wow! Thanks for all the work you did to get these lyrics out to us. Hope there is a way to print some of them out to put in my songbook, without having to retype.

Hurray. I found the instructions from Barbara from 28-Apr-99 to cut and paste. A pain, but works great for copying a song and printing out by the page. Penny

Great selection. Now all I have to do is figure out a way to print them and stuff them in the CD box so I know where they are when I want them. Will you be moving on to the "Hand Picked" double CD? You seem to be in the zone!

Hi Jim,

'Troubles, Trials and Tribulations' is by Estil C. Ball. He sometimes just called it 'Tribulations'. The lines you queried should read (from booklet accompanying 'Southern Journey Vol 8: Sheep, Sheep Don't You Know The Road' which includes a recording of E.C. Ball singing 'Tribulations'):

Verse 1: 'When the angels pour upon us their vows of wrath forever more'.

Verse 2: The line should read: 'The beast with horns will come upon you, one with seven, one with ten'.

Verse 3: 'The mark must be upon your forehead, these worldly goods you then can buy'.

--Cheers, Stewie.

You can find "Hills of Home" at CDNow or Amazon for the amazinly low price of $9.49, and benefit Mudcat to boot. $9.49 ain't bad for a two-CD set with 40 songs.

The following songs are in other threads and probably should be added to DigiTrad:

WHO WILL WATCH THE HOME PLACE?

Here are two I couldn't transcribe:

J'ETAIS AU BAL (lyrics in French)

And here are the tunes without lyrics:

Performed by Joseph Cormier on "Old Time Wedding Reels, And Other Scottish Fiddle Favorites," Rounder 7013.

OLD BLAIR STORE

BILL CHEATHAM
(Traditional)
Performed by Bela Fleck, Bill Keith, and Tony Trischka on "Daybreak," Rounder 11518.

Incidentally, the liner notes on "Hills of Home" are mostly about the performers, not the songs. (Naturally, Rounder wants to sell more CDs.) So if anyone wants to post more information about the songs, feel free.

A BIG thank you, Jim, great work! The lyrics from E.C. Ball were often a bit skewed. Consider:

Fathers, Jesus love you, (2x)
And love come a-trinkling down.
chorus: Seek and ye shall find with a skinny work,
Give a knock and the door shall be opened,
And love come a-trinkling down.

Pretty cool, huh? Now, just what did he mean?

Many thanks, Jim. I also have this incredible collection, and now I know where to find the words. I've actually had it for a couple of years, but haven't transcribed the lyrics except for a few songs. This is a tremendous service for us all. For you Mudcatters who don't know the tunes to some of these songs, order the CD, as instructed in a post above. You will be glad that you did! BlueJay

Jim Dixon has, as the first line of the 4th verse of michael Hurley's Sweet Lucy,

Oh, Harry Hubcaps and Jack the Fluke, they bought a bottle, holy Luke. (?)

The real words are "they bought a bottle of Old Duke". It's a cheap wine, along the lines of Thunderbird. I know Michael, and Thorne Huber (aka Harry Hubcaps) was my best friend. Old Duke, for sure.

The earliest source I can find for this is a Rockabilly singer named Al Urban who recorded it in 1956.    The actual image of the original 45 on SARG records lists him as the writer.
