MMario: Sorry, I don't have any music, sheet or otherwise. I'm not even a musician, hardly. (Sometimes I think I must be the only Mudcatter who isn't.) I'm hoping someone else will take on the task of transcribing the tunes. I figure I'll just stick to what I'm good at, at least until I run out of albums. Then I can always buy more!

You may notice a few question marks (?) in the above text. That's where I'm not sure I got the words right, although I did write down my best guess. An elipsis followed by a question mark ... (?) means I don't have a clue what they were singing and I didn't even dare to guess. An elipsis alone ... just means I am noting the fact that there was a pause in the singing at this point. Corrections are welcome.

I didn't post ALL the songs on this 2-CD collection, only the ones that weren't already in DigiTrad, or in some thread. More info later.

It's a good collection. I found the two cassette set at a bookstore called Borders here in St. Petersburg for only $6.99...I've about wore out the tape deck in my truck from playing them. Highly reccomend the set for a diverse selection of different types of folk music.

Hi Jim,

'Troubles, Trials and Tribulations' is by Estil C. Ball. He sometimes just called it 'Tribulations'. The lines you queried should read (from booklet accompanying 'Southern Journey Vol 8: Sheep, Sheep Don't You Know The Road' which includes a recording of E.C. Ball singing 'Tribulations'):

Verse 1: 'When the angels pour upon us their vows of wrath forever more'.

Verse 2: The line should read: 'The beast with horns will come upon you, one with seven, one with ten'.

Verse 3: 'The mark must be upon your forehead, these worldly goods you then can buy'.

A BIG thank you, Jim, great work! The lyrics from E.C. Ball were often a bit skewed. Consider:

I've actually had it for a couple of years, but haven't transcribed the lyrics except for a few songs. This is a tremendous service for us all. Jim Dixon has, as the first line of the 4th verse of michael Hurley's Sweet Lucy,

Oh, Harry Hubcaps and Jack the Fluke, they bought a bottle, holy Luke. (?)

The real words are "they bought a bottle of Old Duke". It's a cheap wine, along the lines of Thunderbird. I know Michael, and Thorne Huber (aka Harry Hubcaps) was my best friend. Old Duke, for sure.

The earliest source I can find for this is a Rockabilly singer named Al Urban who recorded it in 1956.    The actual image of the original 45 on SARG records lists him as the writer.
