Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Old Dogs, Children and Waterm From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 04 May 00 - 02:36 PM Hi Hardiman the Fiddler, I did a little quick looking around because I was thinking about Tom's other song about pick-up trucks...Anyway, I found this, which tells about Tom. (didn't know he was an ordained Baptist minister!) Also found the words to Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine here. Now tell the truth, you got to thinking about this with all the dandelion wine talk. ;-) Mary

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Old Dogs, Children and Waterm From: Jim Dixon Date: 21 Mar 02 - 09:28 PM The above link no longer works. I don't think this song is posted anywhere in Mudcat. If anyone is still interested in this song, I think it would be a good idea if the lyrics were posted here. I don't know the song myself but at least it has an intriguing title. And it was mentioned in the thread "Songs about Getting Older." |

"How old do you think I am?" he said.
I was sittin' in Miami pourin' blended whiskey down
There wasn't anyone around 'cept this old man and me.
"Ever had a drink of watermelon wine?" he asked.
He said, "Women think about they-selves, when menfolk ain't around.
"Old dogs care about you even when you make mistakes;

Subject: Add: OLD DOGS AND CHILDREN AND WATERMELON WINE From: HiHo_Silver Date: 02 Jul 04 - 11:04 AM Here is a version with chord progression. Whether it is correct I do not know. OLD DOGS AND CHILDREN AND WATERMELON WINE (Narration:) "How old do you think I am?" he said. I said, well, I didn't know. He said, "I turned 65 about eleven months ago." (Fm) I was sitting in (Fm7) Miami pouring (Bb) blended whiskey (Gm) down. (Bbm) When this old gray black (F) gentleman was (Cm7) cleaning up the (Fm) lounge. There wasn't anyone (Fm7) around 'cept this (Bbm) old man and (Gm) me. (Cm7) The guy who ran the bar was watching Ironside on (Fm) TV. Uninvited, he sat (Fm7) down and (Bbm) opened up his (Gm) mind (Bbm) On old dogs and (Fm) children and (Cm7) and watermelon (Fm) wine. "Ever had a drink of watermelon wine?" he asked. He told me all about it, though I didn't answer back. "Ain't but three things in this world that's worth a solitary dime But old dogs and children and watermelon wine." (Key change: Gbm) He said, "women think about themselves when their menfolk ain't around, And friends are hard to find when they discover that you're down." He said, "I tried it all when I was young and in my natural prime. Now it's old dogs and children and watermelon wine. "Old dogs care about you even when you make mistakes. God bless little children while they're still too young to hate." When he moved away I found my pen and copied down that line About old dogs and children and watermelon wine. (Key change: Gm) I had to catch a plane up to Atlanta that next day. As I left for my room, I saw him picking up my change. That night I dreamed in peaceful sleep of shady summertime, Of old dogs and children and watermelon wine. |
