Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Song From the movie Sharpes Sword From: GUEST Date: 05 Nov 13 - 06:12 AM In their 1971 Songbook, the Yetties say that they collected the song from Walt Watts, a regular at the Digby Tap, Sherborne (Dorset) in 1968. They added that 'after a few cups of cider Walt will stand up and give a rewndering of this song, usually getting more attention from the customers than we ever do.' |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Song From the movie Sharpes Sword From: GUEST,JB-used2B3 Date: 22 Jan 17 - 02:35 AM Don't know this movie, but I heard a version of this funny cumulative song in England, back in '79. Supposedly, someone would trick a pretty young thing into standing up on top of a stool, and then would point to the body-part being sung about! (Don't know that it ever happened this way, but it makes a good story!) "Touched her on the toe; that be m' share; that be m' toe-tapper, n' you can play there. Toe-tapper (fill in more of the cumulative song as you go)loves my dear; the more I loves, my dear draw near." out-lookers, snot-box, chatterbox, chinny-chops, breast-plate, navel-stringer, funny thinger, thigh-thacker, knee-knacker, toe-tapper (I'm probably missing some of the body-parts!) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Song From the movie Sharpes Sword From: Herga Kitty Date: 22 Jan 17 - 04:19 AM I remember John Waltham (from Dorset) standing Graham O'Callaghan on a chair to sing this at the English National Festival in Sutton Bonington! Kitty |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Song From the movie Sharpes Sword From: GUEST,Ebor Fiddler Date: 22 Jan 17 - 02:14 PM I still sing this occasionally and find that a really loud CLAP instead of the offending word is very effective. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Song From the movie Sharpes Sword From: gnomad Date: 17 Dec 20 - 08:47 AM Have just re-checked the DVD, JT sings 'Lover draw near' which makes metric sense, and certainly more normal sense than 'Nigger', which I have never heard. That said, the only singer I know sang the song always sang 'Nipper' (as in small child) AFAI can recall; still doesn't really make sense, but as close as seems likely. Certainly more probable than JT singing 'nigger' which I doubt, even 20+ years ago. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Song From the movie Sharpes Sword From: cnd Date: 17 Dec 20 - 11:28 AM "Nigger" doesn't make much sense in this context to me either. You're best off just finding a word that has the same number of syllables and rhymes. The first thing that came to mind for me was neighbor (pronounced "ney-ber" and not "ney-bore"), though I'm sure other words could work. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Song From the movie Sharpes Sword From: Anglo Date: 19 Dec 20 - 04:12 PM I remember "Jinnie" in this context. I haven't heard the song for a long, long time, tho'. The Yetties were regulars at my local folk club in the early 60s. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Song From the movie Sharpes Sword From: GUEST Date: 01 Aug 21 - 02:46 PM I know it's been a long time. But out of all those posts, nobody came close to answering the op question. I have been searching for the answer for some time myself. the series vs is such a snippet that it doesn't give much info to search for. The answer is "That's my Share". Traditional song. But it looks like it was first curated by Peter Kennedy. Add his name to the title and it gets you well on your way. I won't add anything to the off-topic "Far Away" conversation because anyone who would ask the original question already knows everything there is to know about the most excellent title song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Song From the movie Sharpes Sword From: GUEST Date: 02 Aug 21 - 05:56 AM When I heard this in Fagan's at Sheffield, the lyric was '...lover my dear. The more I love her I never draw near'. |
