Yes, I believe that’s what I said - same tune.
And yes, the ABC notation will be there if you just click on the ABC tab: there’s a midi of any tunes on The Session too: see below the score where it says “Play audio”.

YouTube has a number of recordings of this under the name "The Youngest Ancient Mariner." Apparently that tune and "Farewell to Govan" are the same tune.

Tattie Bogle's link just above gives the sheet music and (I think) the ABC notation.

I did once ask Phil if he had any plans to produce another tunes book after "House in Rose Valley" and he said he was thinking of doing just as Capt Swing suggested, having his tune scores online to purchase downloads. But he is such a busy chap, with so many projects on the go, so I don't think it has ever happened.
I do confess to having transcribed a number of his tunes from audio recordings, (having bought the CD first!) but purely for playing among amateur friends for our own enjoyment. I have not as yet tried "Farewell to Govan"!

I agree Leeneia. I'm sure it would be possible in these tech times. It's easy to produce a good pdf surely it would be easy to do charge by copy downloads.

and this is from my cassette recording at Harland & Wolffe 01/10/94! from the promenade side of the huge buiding. The colour sgt's voice you can hear at the start is that of Jimmy Logan, with whom my wife danced the Gay Gordans at the previous 1990 production of "The Ship"!

I have already discovered the folk network and joined last year. and yes F.Feely. I have seen the photo-collage (with many people in it) any other clues as to which one you might be? Ok so I have just re-read the message, you would be the one with a fiddle! I am going to practise some more. Last night I taped my feeble attempts and was amazed at how terrible it sounded on play back. That is quite disturbing as it sounded great in my head as I played. The brain is obviously good at filtering out all the terrible bits.

I think I have spent enough time searching for tunes now I will go and practise playing them!

Ah, the Robin Hood.  I had lodgings on Springfield Road when I first moved up here (so long ago that beer was 14p a pint!!) so it was my local.  I know Bob and Pauline from the pub sessions when we were all a bit younger.  And yes; mostly fiddle, nowadays.

Only recently started going to folkie events mainly The Robin Hood Thursday nights to Bob Hazlewoods Events. Pauline Cato and Andy Irvine were both brilliant. Do you play any instruments?

I am slightly confused now I have a recording of this tune by Liam O'Flynn. I thought he introduced it as "Farewell to Govan" and described it as a tune from Phil Cunningham dedicated to the declining shipbuilding industry of Govan in Scotland. I have just looked at the Cape Bretton Tour Page where "Govan" has become "Govern" and I am now wondering if Phil wrote the tune or just passed it on ?? I will ask Louise to check the sleeve notes (she has the CD with this tune on) but if anyone out there knows where it came from I am interested in hearing....

Thanks Malcolm ! I was just about to purchase Cakewalk scorewriter as I had the demo version and it displays the music but won't print beyond the first page. Instead I have just downloaded MidiNotate and printed off the Tune!! My friend Louise will be thrilled she loves this tune and I know she will love playing it. There seem to be two or three sites that have midis of this tune, and they are all the same arrangement!  Cakewalk displays very eccentric notation for it, but MidiNotate -a freeware program available from  http://www.notation.com/index.htm, seems to be able to cope with it; you might have a go at that.

Just a few thoughts here...not sure how helpful they are...

A quick look-around-the-web turned up this Cape Breton Tour Page with this song listed at the top as a "traditional tune." I don't know exactly what that means. Maybe Dave (the ancient mariner) can tell us if it's traditional in Nova Scotia. If you just want the melody line for a tin whistle or something, find someone with midi software to print it out for you. (My version of Cakewalk won't print the score for me.) Last year I found a nice music store on the 'net which let me search for the music to particular songs. I'll check at home tonight. Remember to let us know if you find something.

Do you mean "Farewell to Govern"? I think the background music here is that one. Maybe if you search for this title something will turn up. I don't know about the music. You can use midi software to see what this arrangement looks like and at least get a nice melody line. (Some software lets you print it.) If you find the music, let me know, because I like it too.

I heard this tune played by Liam o,Flynn on his "The Given Note" CD and I wonder does anyone know where I can get hold of the written music so I can play it myself? The tune was written by Phil Cunningham I believe. I realise it is probably copyrighted and I don't mind paying for it - it is a wonderful tune!
