Okay folks, so I'm 19 years late to the party.

I just happened to be Chord Tabbing the Archie Fisher version of this song 'Welcome, Royal Charlie'. It is very similar to the version by The Tannahill Weavers, but differs from all the other versions posted on this thread.

Archie Fisher version:

The references to "whelps" are not just ordinary insults, but scurrilous puns on the family name of the House of Hanover, "Guelph". George I is called "Geordie Whelps" in several places. The above was "rescued", as Mackay says, from oblivion by Peter Buchan, north-east folksong collector and printer (and accused of being too credulous and careless)—but Mackay thinks it is a genuine antique.

Oh bother, one missing "R", and it all goes to pieces...There's also a long version at the Bodleian Broadside Collection:  Royal Charlie (large image) printed between 1815 and 1827, and another, coupled with Welcome Charlie o'er the Main ("Arouse, arouse each kilted clan") and Wha'll be King but Charlie,  HUGE image.

There are two 'sets' (#71 and #72) in J. Hogg's 'Jacobite Relics', II, pp143-6 1821.
The first commences "The man that should our king hae been " (8 verses)
The second commences "Arouse, Arouse, ilk kilted clan" (6 verses)

Hogg (in Notes) said the 1st was popular all over the country and the 2nd was from a magazine of Feb. 1817.

I've just come across a shorter version in Jacobite Songs and Ballads (ed. G.S. MacQuoid; Walter Scott Ltd., no date), which has one verse not in the one Lesley quotes:

When he upon the shore did stand

And welcomed Royal Charlie.

No information as to the source, unfortunately.

Remind me of that wonderful song about the Culloden massacre, with line that goes Rise and Follow Charlie (Bravely they fought, could they do more / Than die for Royal Charlie) and so on. Probably in the DT, I admit I didn't look first. I can't remember what it's called. It has a Gaelic refrain that I've never understood, sounds like Patchim Faugh (we sing Patchy Fog, Fog, Fog, when appropriate, to that tune).

There are no notes as to the history, author, etc. Anyone have info on that?
