Okay folks, so I'm 19 years late to the party.

I just happened to be Chord Tabbing the Archie Fisher version of this song 'Welcome, Royal Charlie'. It is very similar to the version by The Tannahill Weavers, but differs from all the other versions posted on this thread.

Archie Fisher version:

[Verse]
The prince who should our king ha'e been
He wore the royal red and green
A bonnier lad was never seen
Than our brave royal Charlie

[Chorus]
Ohh, ye've bin lang a comin'
Lang, lang, lang a comin'
Ohh, ye've bin lang a comin'
Welcome royal Charlie

[Verse]
Since our true king was sent awa'
A dighty German rules us a'
And we are forced against the law
For the rights belong tae Charlie

[Chorus]

[Verse]
We daurnae brew a peck o' maut
Or German Geordie finds a faut
And for our kail we've scarce got saut
For want o' royal Charlie

[Chorus]

[Verse]
When Charlie in the Hielan' shiel
Were gaithered wi' the great Lochiel
Oh, what kindness did prevail
Between the chief and Charlie

[Chorus]

[Verse]
At Falkirk and at Prestonpans
Supported by oor Hieland clans
We broke the Hanoverian bands
The rights belong tae Charlie

[Chorus]

[Verse]
For the prince who should our king ha'e been
He wore the royal red and green
A bonnier lad was never seen
Than our brave royal Charlie

[Chorus]

Subject: Lyr Add: ROYAL CHARLIE + HE'S BEEN LANG O' COMING
From: GUEST,Murray on Saltspring

Here's the versions in my books. ROYAL CHARLIE
1.
When France had her assistance lent.
Our darling prince to us she sen t,
Towards the north his course he bent,
His name was Royal Charlie.
But O, he was lang o' coming,
O, he was lang o' coming,
O, he was lang o' coming:—
Welcome, Royal Charlie.

2.
When he upon the shore did stand,
The friends he had within the land
Came down and shook him by the hand,
And welcomed Royal Charlie.
Wi' "O, ye've been lang o' coming," etc.

3.
The dress that our Prince Charlie had
Was bonnet blue and tartan plaid;
And O he was a handsome lad!
Few could compare wi' Charlie.
But O, he was lang o' coming, etc.

— from G. S. Macquoid, Jacobite Songs and Ballads (London: Walter Scott, n.d.), p. 160. Very similar in the next source.

OH! HE'S BEEN LANG O' COMING

1.
The youth that should have been our king,
Was dress'd in yellow, red, and green,
A braver lad ye wadna seen,
Than our brave royal Charlie.
Oh! he's been lang o' coming,
Lang, lang, lang, o' coming,
Oh! he's been lang o' coming,
Welcome royal Charlie.

2.
At Falkirk, and at Prestonpans,
Supported by the Highland clans,
They broke the Hanoverian bands,
For our brave royal Charlie.
Oh! he's been lang, etc.

3.
The valiant chief, the brave Lochiel,
He met Prince Charlie on the dale;
Then, O! what kindness did prevail,
Between the Chief and Charlie.
Oh! he's been lang, etc.

4.
O come and quaff along wi' me,
And drink a bumper, three times three,
To him that's come to set us free,
Huzzy! rejoice for Charlie.
Oh! he's been lang, etc.

5.
We darena brew a peck o' maut,
But Geordie says it is a faut;
And to our kail cannot get saut,
For want of royal Charlie.
Oh! he's been lang, etc.

6.
Now our good king abroad is gone,
A German whelp now fills the throne,
And whelps it is denied by none,
Are brutes compared to Charlie.
Oh! he's been lang, etc.

7.
Now our good king is turn'd awa',
A German whelp now rules us a';
And tho' we're forc'd against our law,
The right belongs rto Charlie.
Oh! he's been lang, etc.

8.
If we had but our Charlie back,
We wadna fear the German's crack;
Wi' a' his thieving hungry pack,
The right belongs to Charlie.
Oh! he's been lang, etc.

9.
O, Charlie come and lead the way,
No German whelp shall bear the sway,
Tho' ilka dog maun hae his day;
The right belongs to Charlie.
Oh! he's been lang, etc.

— From Charles Mackay, The Jacobite Songs and Ballads of Scotland, from 1688 to 1746. (London-Glasgow: Griffin, 1861), pp. 232-4.
The references to "whelps" are not just ordinary insults, but scurrilous puns on the family name of the House of Hanover, "Guelph". George I is called "Geordie Whelps" in several places. The above was "rescued", as Mackay says, from oblivion by Peter Buchan, north-east folksong collector and printer (and accused of being too credulous and careless)—but Mackay thinks it is a genuine antique.

Oh bother, one missing "R", and it all goes to pieces...There's also a long version at the Bodleian Broadside Collection:  Royal Charlie (large image) printed between 1815 and 1827, and another, coupled with Welcome Charlie o'er the Main ("Arouse, arouse each kilted clan") and Wha'll be King but Charlie,  HUGE image.

There are two 'sets' (#71 and #72) in J. Hogg's 'Jacobite Relics', II, pp143-6 1821.
The first commences "The man that should our king hae been " (8 verses)
The second commences "Arouse, Arouse, ilk kilted clan" (6 verses)

Hogg (in Notes) said the 1st was popular all over the country and the 2nd was from a magazine of Feb. 1817.

I've just come across a shorter version in Jacobite Songs and Ballads (ed. G.S. MacQuoid; Walter Scott Ltd., no date), which has one verse not in the one Lesley quotes:

When he upon the shore did stand
The friends he had within the land
Came down and shook him by the hand
And welcomed Royal Charlie.

No information as to the source, unfortunately.

Remind me of that wonderful song about the Culloden massacre, with line that goes Rise and Follow Charlie (Bravely they fought, could they do more / Than die for Royal Charlie) and so on. Probably in the DT, I admit I didn't look first. I can't remember what it's called. It has a Gaelic refrain that I've never understood, sounds like Patchim Faugh (we sing Patchy Fog, Fog, Fog, when appropriate, to that tune).

When France had her assistance lent,
A royal prince to Scotland sent,
Towards the north his course he bent,
His name was Royal Charlie,
Our gallant Scottish prince was clad,
Wi' bonnet blue and tartan plaid,
An' oh, he was a handsome lad,
Few could comprare wi' Charlie.
An oh, but you've been lang o' comin,
Lang, lang, lang o' comin'
O but ye've been land o' comin',
Welcome Royal Charlie.

Around ilk valiant kilted clan,
Let Highland hearts lead on the van,
And charge the foe, claymore in hand,
For sake o' Royal Charlie.
O welcome, Charlie, o'er the mian,
Our Highland hills are a' your ain,
Thrice welcome to our isle again,
Our gallant Royal Charlie.
oh, but you've been lang o' comin,
Lang, lang, lang o' comin'
O but ye've been land o' comin',
Welcome Royal Charlie.

From a the wilds o' Caledon
We'll gather ever hardy son,
Til thousands to his standard run,
And rally round Prince Charlie.
Come let the flowing quaich go round,
And boldly bid the pibroch sound.
Til every glen and rock resound
The name of Royal Charlie.
oh, but you've been lang o' comin,
Lang, lang, lang o' comin'
O but ye've been land o' comin',
Welcome Royal Charlie.
^^
This is from Songs of Scotland, Royal Edition, Vol I, Brown and Pittman - Boosey & Co. 1877.

There are no notes as to the history, author, etc. Anyone have info on that?

I'll do a midi of the music in a couple of days and post a link here.

Archie's first line is: "The prince, who should our king hae been," - better, I think.

Greetings, all -

Can anyone supply the complete lyrics & chords for this song? I have checked the title list under "Welcome," "Royal," "Charlie," "Lang," "Ye've," "You've," & "Oh." I tried checking the suggestions under forum results, but some of the links would not go through, so please forgive me if this had already been posted somewhere. Thanks in advance.

Judith
