Quiet for now amongst the trees, but soon the rolling thunder would come, preceded by cloud spasms pumping their way upward before trailing off in a coal colored plume. Eleven thousand tons of liquid sound heaving toward you, the diesel and electric heartbeat imposing its life rhythm over your own. And the trumpet -as if Gabriel had forecast the tidal wave himself. Then it washes over you, a symphony of clackety movements: grain and coal hoppers; piggybacks; tankers; boxcars festooned with the nocturnal visions of graffiti travel guides. Abruptly, the river runs dry again. Nothing remains but a few clicks, mere trickles of what had gone on before. The bells and whistles fade away, the lights go out. The dust settles and the curtains rise. Cue audience: "Gentlemen, start your engines," and we belch exhaust gases in appreciation. The race resumes, but for a few moments we were, like wondrous children, awash and lost in train magic. You're welcome in my kitchen anytime. I'll bake you a cake if you bring the ingredients - what suits your fancy suits mine. |
