An Duil La! I was just lurking through some of the fine gaelic songs held by the mudcat, when I came across what is called here 'Sileas Puirt a Beul.' I would just like to say that it is also called 'Thoir a Nall Ailean Thugam' and in the Southern Isles (Uist, Barra etc...) we use that verse as a chorus, if you get my jist. We also have some different verses that we use. Just wanted to say that! Aodh.

I'm going to have to talk to some of my relatives to get the rest of the song. Yet I can tell you most of the story, which in the township I grew up in is said to have started the song. The Lord of South Uist and Benbecula, Clan Ranald of Mac Donald (Clann Mac Ic'Ailean) had his castle in the centre of the isle of South Uist. His two sons where adout to wed, when the older son bosted about how he could build his marital home quicker than the younger son. So the game to see who could build faster began. The older son built his house on Benbecula, at a place called Nuntun. The younger son built his in the south of Uist, at South LochBoisdale. The younger son built his the quickest and on the day it was finished he and his bride was married. The celebrations at Boisdale house are the events of the song. The tale I know is just childhood babalings, but both houses are still standing and being lived in. The big castle of Clann Mac Ic'Ailean burnt to the ground the night of Sherifmuir. I'll post the rest of the song as soon as I can..Aodh.

Many thanks for that, Aodh. Unfortunately the DT file was taken from sleeve-notes without traditional source named or background information supplied, and no tune was given. Now that the thread has been revived, are you by any chance in a position to post the tune?

note about posting tunes - MMario can do abc or midi if you provide him with sheet music. Alison can do midis from recordings as well - I think she has an audial connection where if you have the microphone connection on your computer (I don't) you can sing her the song over e-mail?
