We were at a friend's place in Canada and he wanted to see what we sounded like in a studio he'd set up. We did Dink's as a mic check from Margaret's voice and my guitar. The friend doing the recording starting doing a producer kind of thing and making performance suggestions and we got the final result after about six takes. The flute bit was over dubbed later. I actually got a video of us performing the song at a house concert in 2000,with the producer along playing flute, and managed to post it on youtube a couple years back. My first exposure to the song was from Dave Van Ronk and the Hudson Dusters album. |

Did 'Dink' actually sing it with that central 'r', and is that how Lomax recorded it? - or in light of story above of how he broke the cylinder & recreated it from memory, how he remembered it? And are there any other songs in which the name of the ark-builder is thus rendered? That variant doesn't seem to appear on any version above on this thread, but is that perhaps how it should appear? I don't have to hand any of the books ref'd above, to check how they render the name. ~Michael~ |

Quite lovely to hear, even if it was a bit rewritten. I think they only did three verses, but I'll have to check when I can dig up the album. Jay |

C/Em/Am My memory says it was Bob Gibson. Whoever it was, they would eventually speed the song up to 6/8 time and then keep the guitar going and stretch the lyrics back to 3/4. 'Twas very powerful to my young listening ears. Roger in Baltimore (just passin' thru) Preformat commands <pre> (beginning) and </pre> (end) added to space chords. However, he turned it into a man's song and sang only the first 4 verses of the version given in the DT (1, 4, 2, 3 in that order). Bal & F S_. Thing is, there's no original tune for either. "Blues"'s tune was never recorded, it seems. The cylander John recorded "Song" on in 1904 got broken. The well-known, beautiful tune used by everybody is as he remembered it and sang for his family. |
