This song was sung in the movie called, "Where the Lilies Bloom"
It is a movie only released commercially on VHS and is from 1973.
A lovely movie filmed in the Appalachian area in USA. It is about 4 kids between 5 & 16 who were left orphaned after their father died.
One of the young actresses in the film sang this song as well as other songs. Not released on DVD unless done by someone privately to sell but not by the film industry who released this movie and only on VHS. I have the movie on VHS. The girl who sings in it has a really beautiful folk voice.

I know this is an old thread, but as I noted in 2004 on one of the other related threads, this Sacred Harp hymn entitled "WHITE" achieved being one of my all-time favourite songs after hearing English group JOLLY JACK sing it, replete with gorgeous male harmonies!

I first heard it on Peter Bellamy's 1979 album "Both Sides Now" (with Waterson harmonies) and then was given a copy of Jolly Jack's heart-stopping recording for Fellside in 1988 (on "A Long Time Travelling" album).

Ever after, I tried to weave it into the repertoire of a cappella harmony groups I sang with! Sad to say, my voice entered a dysphonic era in 2009 and that was the end of that dream :(

Though I quite like The Wailin Jennys, I was a little .... ahem .... "surprised" (shall we say), to find The Net and YouTube fairly swamped with young girlie "covers of their song", LOL! - no one mentions its true origins and very rarely does a male version come up for listening.

Come All Ye Singing Blokes out there - seek out that Jolly Jack version of "White" and see how wonderful those bass harmonies can be - then help redress the balance on YouTube - PLEASE!! :):):)

PS   apparently called "White" in tribute to Benjamin Franklin White, the 1844 compiler of "The Sacred Harp" - composed by Elder Edmund Dumas.

The story of "Mr. Wroe's Virgins" is set in Britain in the 1820s. Do you think this song is historically (and musically) accurate?

G Jim, it's in the DT as "LONG TIME TRAVELIN'", no "g" on the end. A bunch of nice recorded version out there. Ann Hills has a good one and so do the Red Clay Ramblers.

Nice version of this song by Si Kahn and John McCutcheon can be found on Sign of the Times. They medley it, to nice effect, with a song they wrote about their paths crossing after being apart 15 years or so.

Jim I did see this film series; they showed at the MFA in Boston. It is incredible, one of the best things I have seen in years!!! I wish I could obtain a video copy, or it would be shown in this country on TV...

I've been wanting to find for quite a while the origin and words of the folk hymn used throughout Danny Boyle's fantastic serialisation of Angela Rogers' "Mr. Wroe's Virgins", made for the BBC in 1993.

The only words I can recall are:

I'm a long time travelling here below
I'm a long time travelling far from home
I'm a long time travelling here below
To lay (his? my?) body down

Could anybody help me? And if you get the chance and haven't seen the serial (now sadly unavailable on video), do - it's wonderful!
