I note from the papers that there is something called the Webbie Awards going on in San Francisco for great Web sites. All the ones that they talk about seem to me to be neat, cool, whizzbang, hot stock tips -- but in terms of quality of participation and simple elegance, I think Mudcat is easily a top award winner. I spend a lot of time checking out Web sites, and being on various groups, and this is still the best by far for sheer community, sharing of information and high humour, and technical ease assisting immediate participation -- I guess elegance and quiet quality don't get awards. Hell, they don't even get categories!!!! Perhaps if I can figure out the nomination process for next year....But then, who cares about awards anyway?
(What this thread is is just another sneaky chance to throw bouquets at Max and everyone here).

Peter, are you the same guy who'd be bitching about the diminished quality of this site if it did get an award and an influx of curious people who know squat about folk music and our brand of humor, but want to post to show they've been here?

I'm delighted the wide world out there doesn't know about Mudcat.

There has also been a recent list of most boring web sites. One devoted to electricity pylons was the winner (or loser, I suppose!)

I saw a REALLY boring one for a water filter company. They tried to photograph the filters to make them look well-presented, but the whole thiing was just so dull!

Thanks Peter, I guess that there are just no judges that dig traditional music. My cousin nominated for the people's choice webbie this year for his parody site gwbush.com. Oh well, there is always next year. We know we're the best anyhow.

Barbara, keeping great things to yourself doesn't sound quite right. Sure it would bring an influx of strangers, but so far, we have handled everything. Maybe I'd just like the challenge, but I think we could do it. We'd make new friends and maybe just be able to finance this place for once.

Barbara has a point. We are kind of the Callahan's Crosstime Saloon of web sites--we seem to be found by those who need to, mostly. Don't know if we'd want gazillions of people around here trampling on the lawn.

And we've probably had an alien visitation or two along the way. :-)

Gee, Max now I feel really guilty. I first found Mudcat Cafe about 2-3 months ago and immediately told everyone I knew about it. A few stopped by and then lost the web address. Now when they ask me for that link, I feign stupidity or promise and never deliver. I just don't want them playing in my sandbox.

But you're right. They should come in and visit and stay if they like. You all did let me play with your toys. But I won't do a mass mailing just selective invitations.

I for don't know why you would want this site to be an exclusive "camp" for pure folkies.. What is that really??.. I love this site and I don't consider myself a folk singer.. But this site should be shared by all of us as a tool for musicians and as a gathering place where we can learn about folk music.. I have certainly learned about your humor.. perhaps the hard way but I have learned.. Of course now I can't help but wonder if I am considered an alien...Who has landed here...Sometimes by trying to seperate ourselves we instead isolate.. and how can you grow musically if you isolate yourself???Webby Next Year for sure...

All right S.D. Shad, I salute a fellow Spider Robinson fan. It's nice to know you're out there (and probably a lot of us too) I have quoted "pain shared is pain divided, joy shared is joy multiplied" many many times and I think the Mudcat can often be a good example.

I'll try to be brief.

I've had the internet for about four years, and it had but two dimensions until I discovered the Mudcat. I looked in for awhile, thinking it can't be what it appears, but once I took the leap to contribute, I became addicted. It's more than it appears.

Slowly I am getting to know folks here. I like the musician stuff 'cause that's what I am, but I like the BS stuff 'cause it makes me think. I like that folks just answer my threads and give freely. I sent a personal message to Rick Fielding lately and almost as an after-thought I thanked him for what he gives to the site. He and others don't claim to own information it seems, but claim the right to disseminate it. I don't feel so alone here on those days which isolate me from my interests. I've even had a couple of invitations to visit. This openheartedness is typical here.

Awards are largely meaningless unless they contribute to the meaning of that which is being rewarded.

does the folk alliance promote the mudcat in their membership publication? i would be happy to assist if you would like help marketing this. the resources here are fabulous. i know i have barely barely even begun to scratch the surface of this place...

plus i have an old mac and can't play with you all on the live stuff :-(

but the knowledge and history and breadth of the contributions is astounding. it is so rare to find people around knowledgeable about such things... and mudcat brings them from cross all continents.

its a digital tradition now. and i love it.
