Just curious if any Catters were part of the march or participated locally. Anyone take part in the 2nd Ammendment Sisters thing?

I haven't been on a demonstration in a lot of years, and I have no idea what kind of music would be used currently. Something tells me that some of the sixties songs might have gotten re-cycled, but as to current ones? Haven't got a clue. I suspect that the "folk presence" is probably not a big part of something like this, but I don't know what would replace it. Wish the "Moms" had a different spokesperson than Rosie O'Donell though...sorry, but I find her verrrry irritating. Heston may be (IMHO) full of hot air but his voice is much easier to take.

Rick: I realize that the Liberal press has made Heston an ogre, but I had an opportunity to know him pretty well when he was a member of the National Council on the Arts and I was on the staff. He is a far more reasonable person than the one described in the press, who is committed to the fact that in America a citizen is guaranteed the right to own a firearm. Not a popular position for Liberals, and I assume you fall into this category, but unless our Constitution is changed, that's the way it is. I do own a couple of ancient long guns that belonged to my father and grandfather, and have no desire to own a hand gun, but I would quarrel with anyone who tried to deny me the right to own one.

Hi Doug

Actually, I'm not on side with a lot of my friends on this one. I've always had the choice to live where I wanted to, and often my decisions were based on whether I felt personally safe in the environment that surrounded me. A lotta folks don't have that option. Sadly I've learned to have very little trust in the police's ability to protect me if I (or my little family of wife and two cats) was in danger. More importantly I have NO faith in the justice system to punish (difficult) criminals. Again and again I see them come down hard on easy busts, and tip toe around potentially controversial cases.

Currently one of our most chillingly twisted murderers (Karla Homolka) is being supported in her bid for early parole by the Elizabeth Fry Society, and may be free after serving 5 or so years for crimes to horrid to mention here. Sadly, that case, (and a number of others) has completely turned me around in some of my views. I absolutely refuse to put ideology before common sense.

If I had to live in a potentially dangerous situation, I would probably arm myself, even though I've never killed so much as a squirrel, and wouldn't go hunting if you held a gun to my head! (sorry for the joke) Therefore I just don't feel I can speak for others not as lucky as I am to be living in a very safe country.

Wish I could be more positive about Heston 'cause I gather he's an articulate and interesting man, but he (in his role as NRA spokesman) implies that Republicans are "good guys" and Democrats are "bad guys". T'aint true. They are ALL putting ideology ahead of truth. I've seen it night after night on political talk shows. Even Al Gore (who I'd like to admire) has proven he will be completely dishonest to win votes. Bush jr. strikes me as contemptable in his ignorance. I think it's a sad situation when political leaders at virtually every level are that lacking in honesty and guts. Glad I ONLY vote here (in Canada) when I feel a candidate is really worth it. Happens on rare occasions.

Just know I'd probably feel more comfortable around "The Moms" than I would "the 2nd..sisters". Too many "militia" types I think.

Rick

After Dunblane the families and supporters put out a fund-raising record for the anti-guns campaign - Knocking on Heaven's Door

I'd be surprised if that didn't get sung on the Mothers' Day marches.

What puzzles me is why the people who think that "the right to bear arms" is something they want to defend aren't the strongest and most rigorous promoters of tougher gun laws. But instead we see an organisation that talks about enforcing existing laws, maybe, but in practice spends millions of dollarsd trying to stop the mildest and most commonsense reforms.

It's as if an organisation ostensibly in favour of supporting the retention of Capital Punsishment was to campaign in favour of the right to form lynchmobs. Self defeating in the long run.

Maybe the NRA has been infiltrated - Charlton Heston is really just in there to work to get rid of the guns.

Worrying thing in my local paper yesterday. A chap hired a tent and booked to stay for a couple of weeks. He has gone missing but has left all of his things.

Among them was a NRA key fob?

COULD SOMEONE ANSWER THE ORIGINAL QUESTION PLEASE? We have many gun threads here, and many many to come I am sure, alas. I happened to be in a store when the news was on, and I saw a woman on the stage at the march playing a fiddle. So there must have been some music.
yours, Peter T.

Thank you, Peter! I watched a bit of it on CNN and there was a band, didn't catch the name, but I think the guy's name who was singing was Michael Christopher. Had never heard of him, thought someone else might have. It was at the end of the "March," in D.C. ... moonchild

As a Washington resident, I can tell you that Melissa Ethridge is an almost a permanent attaachedment to every march--she has been on stage at the last three, The WTO/World Bank march, the Gay/Lesbian thing, and, though I am not sure what songs she plays, I'll bet you could find them at one of her fan websites.

Musicians who play often simple do whatever they do, whether it has related content or not--there is drumming and that sort of thing, and periodic chanting, but there is not the kind of singing of issue related songs that there used to be.

The main thing is, if you have cable, and get any of the CSPAN channels (here inside the Beltway, we get three of them) check them out, because they tape hours of march related stuff and broadcast it from time to time. They basically turn the camera on and point, so you get a much better feel for what is happening than from the news.

There were ten Jewish guys on their way to a funeral in Washington at the same time this march was happening.

It was called THE MINION MAN MARCH.

Well, I spoke to someone who attended and got my answer. Seems accurate enough to me. Lotsa Melissa E. Lotsa Ani DiFranco (for the younger ones I guess) Lotsa Mary Chapin Carpenter, and for the VAST majority (those without a "folk" or "protest" background, just the stuff they'd listen to on the radio anyway. She said the "other" side played Lee Greenwood's "God Bless The USA" endlessly.

If thousands of very ugly men had a rally it might be "The Mullion Man March".*

* I don't know what it is either, but apparently black baseball players insult each other with it.

So far not a single post from anyone who went on any of the marches. There must be someone with a first hand report to file, like there was at the Seattle WTO events...

Don't know how much to trust the stories that float around here in Washington, but I have heard a number of stories about the police confiscating handguns and other weapons from a number of the "million moms", some apparently saying that they won't feel safe until the laws are changed and pointing to all shootings in DC(like the zoo thing). I guess nobody told them that DC has some of the strictest gun laws in the country.

Rick, I don't know any songs on this topic, but there is one I've heard talked about concerning several groups of ten male Jews walking down the street that was called the "minion man march". ;-)

Maybe someone needs to write a mother's song for it.

Could call it "You'll Put Your Eye Out"...
