Subject: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: GUEST,Sionnach Date: 17 May 00 - 12:16 PM I read with much interest and delight the various responses to the query: What do you say/play when it's over? And since I'm thinking about an upcoming gig, I wondered if folks had favorite songs to play (or things to say) to mark the end of the evening. "The Parting Glass", of course, we use frequently -- any other favorites? Sionnach |

Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: TerriM Date: 17 May 00 - 12:23 PM We always try for something with a strong and well-known chorus so people can have a good sing before they go home; Lowlands, Let the Circle be Unbroken or Lay Down Sally seem to go down well. |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 17 May 00 - 12:38 PM Song's I like to end with... Lucky Man by Grit Laskin That's just a few off the top of my head... {~` |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: MK Date: 17 May 00 - 12:50 PM As far as what to say, whenever my band would finish a successful engagement, we always said the same thing to each other. It became one of our little catch-phrases. We came. We saw. We kicked its ass. *BG* |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: Lonesome EJ Date: 17 May 00 - 01:58 PM How about "thanks for the free beer. Now can I have my harmonica back?" or "Good night, you've been a wonderful audience! We'll see both of you next time!" |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: bbelle Date: 17 May 00 - 02:12 PM My sign-off song is always "Tomorrow Is A Long Time" ... moonchild |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: Kim C Date: 17 May 00 - 05:27 PM We do Parting Glass a lot, unless we're playing for the Sons of Confederate Veterans (hey, I'm in Tennessee, waddyawant?), then it's Dixie. |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: Peter Kasin Date: 18 May 00 - 01:43 AM For anything maritime related, the chantey "Leave Her, Johnny" or "The Farewell Chantey" are great closers. For any bar gig, one could tell them "Good night. Safe home. Mind the walls." (heard an Irish musician say that at the end of a gig). |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: Gervase Date: 18 May 00 - 03:57 AM The John Tams reworking of "When We Go Rolling Home" usually brings the roof down in pub song sessions - although traditionally the Middle Bar singers at Sidmouth end with a full version of "The Music Man", complete with the Dambusters theme music, the Archer's theme and both verses of Jerusalem - with Busby Berkeley-style choreography to the various actions. A strange brew, I'll admit, but it should be heard at (and seen) least once! |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 18 May 00 - 04:23 AM There's the old chestnut: Thank you, you've been a wonderful audience. ...Not tonight, obviously, but I'm sure you have been..." and "If you've enjoyed us, tell your friends. If you haven't, keep your big gob shut". RtS (ever the smooth-talking charmer) |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 18 May 00 - 04:53 AM Heard/said a the end of nights... "Ya don't have to go home, but ya can't stay here..." But it's all in fun eh! {~` |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: Midchuck Date: 18 May 00 - 06:39 AM For a really useless, drunk, very noisy, audience: "F*** you, F*** you VERY much!" (Spoken cheerfully, with a big, genial smile, preferably by the chick singer). They never notice what you're actually saying, and it's some small satisfaction after a frustrating evening. Peter. |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: Bugsy Date: 18 May 00 - 07:58 AM Usually "Rolling Home", "Irene" or "They Don't Write 'Em Like That Anymore" Cheers

Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: GUEST,Rob O Date: 18 May 00 - 08:26 AM We like Parting Glass, but we've also ended our sets on strong songs, our best being "Star of the County Down". As for lines: "Please remember to tip your hard working waitstaff!" Sometimes this gets us free beer after the set. :) Rob O of "Lovely Parting Gifts" |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: Terry Allan Hall Date: 18 May 00 - 09:30 AM I frequently end a performance w/ "Irene, Goodnight"....great "singalong" tune and everyone knows the chorus! |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: Sean Belt Date: 18 May 00 - 12:33 PM I've used "I Bid You Goodnight" pretty often. It's a rousing, sing-along spiritual sort of song that the Incredible String Band recorded. I actually got it from a recording of the Pindar Family and Joseph Spence. - Sean |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: Mooh Date: 18 May 00 - 03:06 PM Nobody's said "Take This Job and Shove It", good thing that. Mooh. |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: Midchuck Date: 18 May 00 - 04:12 PM "Nobody's said "Take This Job and Shove It", good thing that. Mooh." Probably because, although I'm sure doing music full-time for a living can be brutal, when you do it part-time and depend on a real job for your living, even the bad gigs are more fun than the day job - unless you have the incredible good luck to have a day job that really turns you on and be a musician. Sort of like sex: "The worst I ever had was absolutely magnificent!" Peter. |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: Escamillo Date: 19 May 00 - 01:05 AM When I perform as soloist, my last words in a show usually are: "HEY! Where's everybody gone ??" Un abrazo - Andrés |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: tgreenie Date: 19 May 00 - 01:33 AM We like to end with "here's to you, whoever you may be ... |
Subject: RE: What to say/play when the GIG is over? From: Mooh Date: 19 May 00 - 07:21 AM Thread drift alert. Midchuck, Right on! I have two jobs outside of band stuff. One is a blue collar public sector part-time thing, and the other is teaching guitar lessons. I'd take the very worst music job over my other thing any day, and I hope to do music full-time someday. But more to the point, I know of a band that maybe 20 years ago did play "Take This Job and Shove It" at the end of the night, and played it (for a good half hour) until the cops came and made the dancehall owner pay up according to the terms of their contract. I understand the hall had cleared out by then, and the band had a great time with it, but it was a unique way of dealing with a very difficult employer. Oh well, sometimes we get thrown a curve... Peace, Mooh. |
