Another version of "The Inconstant Lover," sharing similar verses and the tune.

Go build me a log cabin on the mountain so high,
Where the wild goose can't find me or hear my sad cry.

It's trouble, it's trouble,
It's trouble on my mind;
If trouble don't kill me
I'll sure live a long time.

They will hug you, they will kiss you,
they will tell you more lies
Than cross ties on railroads,
and stars in the skies.

Verses from 248, "The Inconstant Lover," pp. 271-274, Frank C. Brown, North Carolina Folklore, vol. 3, Folk Songs from North Carolina.

I'M SAD AND I'M LONELY
As sung by Carl Sandburg on "The Great Carl Sandburg: Songs of America" (1999)

I'm sad and I'm lonely; my heart it will break.
My sweetheart loves another; Lord, I wish I was dead.

My cheeks once were red as the bud on the rose,
But now they are whiter than the lily that grows.

Young ladies, take warnin'; take a warnin' from me:
Don't waste your affection on a young man so free.

He'll hug you; he'll kiss you; he'll tell you more lies
That the cross-ties on the railroad or the stars in the sky.

I'll build me a cabin in the mountain so high,
Where the blackbird can't see me or hear my sad cry.

I'm troubled; I'm troubled; I'm troubled in mind.
If trouble don't kill me, I'll live a long time.

I'm sad and I'm lonely. My poor heart will break.
My true love loves another and I wish I was dead.
My cheeks once was red as the buds on a rose,
But now they are white as the lily that grows.

Come all you young ladies; take a warning from me.
Never place your affections on a young man so free.
For he'll hug you and squeeze you and he'll tell you more lies
Than the cross-ties on the railroad or the stars in the skies.

Well, I'll build me a little cabin in the mountains so high
Where the blackbird can't see me or hear my sad cry.
Well, I'm sad and I'm lonely. My poor heart will break.
My sweetheart loves another. Lord, I wish I was dead.

As sung by Derroll Adams.

Cheers

Bugsy

Last verse that I know:

I'm troubled, yes, I'm troubled
I'm troubled in my mind.
IF this trouble don't kill me
I'll live a long time.

then repeat the first verse.

This was learned from Burl Ives, maybe fifty years ago.

Carl Sandburg sang:

I'm sad and I'm lonely,
My heart it will break.
My sweetheart loves another,
And I wish I was dead!

Look in his An American Songbag (New York, 1927) at your local library. I assume it's there. Also, it's probably on the recently reissued CD of his early recordings, which I have yet to hear. Can you help, Stewie? You seem to have every folk record ever made.

Sandy (just slightly green with envy)

Also, one of the lines in a very old song is "I am Sad and I am Lonely". It's called "Bury Me Beneath the Willow". Guarantee it's in the DT.

Well, Audz, looking for the phrase [sad and lonely] in square brackets brings up this (click). Don't know if any of those fit your bill, though. Do you know anything more of the song? Fragments of lyrics, where it was heard, anything? If it's a folk song, it oughta be here.
